Yes he did. And to "stir the pot" on this thread further, I commented to Ali's mom the other day that I thought Smithbaseball should be the coach of the year for the SED considering how far he has brought that team this year and the very recognizable change, not only in player performance but in player attitude (from an appearance sometimes of not wanting to be there in years past to believing in themselves this year.)

-----------1--2--3--4--5--6--7---R--H--E
I. River----0--0--0--1--0--1--1---3--4--0
O. Smith---0--0--0--0--0--0--0---0--2--2

I. RIVER: Josh Carter ('10) & Jordan Adair ('10) were lights-out on the mound, striking out 12 & only allowing 2 infield hits (one on a bunt). Leland Clemmons was 2-for-3 with a run and a SB, Matt Dickason ('10) had a triple and scored a run on a Dean Ali ('10) sac-fly, and Nick Michaud ('11) collected the other hit for I. River.

O. SMITH: Freshman David Loudon ('13) was once again thrown out there versus a top-teir opponent and held his own (started vs WB last week), tossing 6 IP, allowing 3 hits, 1 ER, and walking only 2 against Indian River's regular 9 man lineup. Smith only made 2 errors, but once again they were killers as each scored a run with 2 outs. Stephen Lorkiewicz ('12) & Brandon Davis ('10) got the only hits for the Tigers on Senior Night.

Carter is known for his bat, but he's 84mph+ off the mound with a decent breaking ball and will even throw a knuckle... there is actually a D1 school interested in him as a pitcher more than 3B. He threw very well against FC in the Beach Blast as well. He can be a little wild, but was on last night.

I believe Adair threw for just the 2nd time all year last night... he also was 84mph+ last night with a very sharp breaking ball he threw for strikes. He looked great spotting the fastball down & his breaking ball really had bite.

Both guys can definitely be effective for IR if they make it to the regionals & project as college pitchers at some level... 12 Ks is the most we've had in a game all season.

Also... the All-District teams have been selected but coaches are told, outside of telling individual players who made the teams, they cannot "leak" the teams until after the team is put in the paper on Thursday morning... I guess there is an agreement in place where the Pilot gets to report the m teams first.

So help me understand why WB is your pick for next year. Typically it takes 2-3 good pitchers along with the requisite hitters and D to win. As we saw this year with Cox, a POY pitcher is not enough to win the SED. These are the pitchers I am aware of at each school for next year's run:
WB-thompson
GB-flaherty
NR-Moore
OS-Foreman and Loudon
GF-Inghram

Other than OS, who are the second & third pitchers that are going to be key parts of any of these rotations?
WB has Thompson and Johsonbaugh (Soph) returning. They graduate only 2 starters if I am not mistaken. So they will be returning their top two pitchers as well as 7 everyday players. GF, IR and GB all lose significant portions of their offense and pitching this spring. The non playoff teams will not close the gap with returning players.

As things sit right now it is probably a better bet that they will go undefeated in SED than finish below first the district.
This is what I have for next year's pitching...

WB - Thompson & Johnsonbaugh
GB - Flaherty & Sutmiller/Jones (Stokes & Van Assche graduate)
GF - Ingraham & Outman (both lefties... Cox graduates)
IR - Roger Hall & Conner Inskeep (neither pitched for IR this year... all of their pitching has been seniors)
H - Lighton & Lathrop/Chandler (Grauer, Jaeger graduate)
NR - Moore & ? (Hoffler graduates)
DC - Stewart & ? (Cole & Barker graduate)
KF - Cherry & J.T. Wilson (Bowman graduates)
L - Waterfield & ?
OS - Applin/Foreman/Smith/Loudon (the last three will be sophomores)

WB will definitely be the team to beat with what they are returning. GB will always be there. After that... there is no telling how things will shake out in 2011...

Regardless... right now, in 2010, we have some incredible baseball to watch tonight/tomorrow.

I think Cherry at Kings Fork is just a junior. Robby Lighton and Bobby Chandler return for Hickory varsity.

Robby Lathrop and Bobby Chandler from Hickory. Both were sophs this year.

sorry got my L's mixed up.

Matt Campbell (also a soph) can throw as well next year for Hickory. Throws harder than both Lathrop and Chandler and has pitched some for his showcase team. Lathrop (from the Pilot) was 3-0 for the Hawks.
213 Brave,

I think Smith has it about right. GB brings back a solid core and they will probably be in the best position at least early next year to give WB it's sternest test. I just think WB has more bigger guns coming back.

For the next couple of days and weeks we still have the group that's been there all year this year to watch. I expect the SED to be a very tough out this year.

Matt has thrown in his AAU days but he doesn't pitch for the Canes.

My appologies... I heard that he had thrown on a few occasions for the Canes. Nonetheless, I would not be surprised if he pitched a few innings next year. You might even see him bat left handed as well.

luv baseball,

YOUR CORRECT. Last Night PROVED WB won't really be out matched!! WB just has to go game by game and next year will fall into place. As for GB with their returning players all played last night as well. I understand that their JR. Flaherety pitched, as they brought in another JR. Suttmiller.....so they again for next year will be something to see. Not to over rate any team yet if they combined they'd really ROCK IT! I look forward to the game tonight and what happens next. I am so Proud of the players and wish each of them the best. Someone from SED needs to take it all the WAY!!!!
