Hey,
I am looking to starting teams that consist of U14 U16 and U18. These teams will be traveling to different tournaments around the east coast such as scouting teams. With the u18 traveling the most, the the U16, and followed by the U14's. I have looked at NABF, and they offer to start a franchise if you have 4 or more teams. I am looking to get this going for the 06 summer. My questions are, where do you start to look for the tournaments to enter the teams in. I know there are always tournaments to enter, however, how do you end up getting the team in the national tournaments, such as the World Wood Bat Championship in Jupiter? I know my questions are all over the place but I am sure there are people that are very knowledgable in answering them on here.
Other questions, Insurance, avg price i should play for facilities, how much you feel it will end up being per player. Etc...However I assume this all starts on which tournaments you enter because they all vary on price. So then where would I find the tournaments allready planned for the 06 summer season starting with memorial day weekend?
Thanks even if you can answer one of my questions that are all over that would be great. Thanks!

I don't know anything about east coast tournaments for the most part, but I have a question you might want to ask yourself, and then ask it again a week later...Do you know what you're getting yourself in for?

I have two teams, an 18s and a 16s. It is very gratifying and we get to play a lot of quality baseball, but I hope you go into this with a full understanding of how much work it is to run a progarm like you're considering, IT'S A TON OF WORK. If you haven't done this before, I'd suggest you start with one team and try to run it as well as you can for a year at least, then expand one team at a time. I ran a single team for the first four years I did this, before expanding to two teams. While we had a great year, I was worn out at the end, and was glad to have a break after 3 months of non-stop baseball. It also interferes mightily with work, unless you're trying to make this your business. These are just a few things to consider, there are many more.

With that said, I wish you the very best of luck. Maybe we'll meet in Marietta next summer.
bialy14...what is your motivation for doing this? You seem to have lots of questions that appear to be very generic for someone who has coached at this level before. With your level of inexperience, I would agree you should start with one team, then build for the future.

Before I want to offer some advice, I'd like to know if I am talking to a disgruntled parent of a kid who has been cut the last couple of years from the local travel club, or if you live in an area where a great need for a travel baseball organization exists, but none are currently available.

Please advise.
bialy14,

I tend to think that you misunderstood the NABF franchise information. You must have a league with 4 teams to join as a franchise

I would suggest that you find out what leagues there are in your area and what their affiliation's are.

Since you are in NJ I can list a few.
ECTB
CJBL
CJABL
CERBO

You will need to look into (in no particular order)

sponsorship
playing & practice field
players
insurance (you might try AAU or K&K Insurance Group)
equipment
uniforms
coaches

You might look into an existing organization that might not have a team in your age group and hook up with them....

You really need to have a handle on the financials before you get to far into it..... The cost of all the things I mentioned above really add up.... Make sure people know what they are getting into...

You also have to ask yourself.... Why am I starting this team?

Hey,
First off, I am not a dad or a coach of a dad, just a former play. I am looking to offer something that is not offered in an area that can use it. However, as far as the coaches are going, I will not be the one coaching, coaches with experience will be highered, and are allready interested. I can be titles the commisioner and the one who handles all the behind the scenes stuff. However, having played on many of the major teams in the passed I know that a great deal of work goes into the evolution of a team. And to create teamS is an evern greater stress. However, in order to fund the league and all of its cost etc, it can be presumed for it to be a bussiness, so the question i pose does it degrade the team if the amount paid is more than what the team is cost? I do love the game, but does it slander the team if there is a profit being made. However as we all well know, there is MANY COST, such as you all have mentioned, such as facilities, equipment, tournament fees, UNIFORMS, so after all the cost are tallied, and figured, is it disrespectful to the players, and parents if they are paying also for the time, and hard days of the "commisioner" owner and founder of the team or TEAMS. Which can be a full time job? Is this more to the point?
