Top Tier just added the hard throwing lefty John Flanagan ranked # 1 in PBR class of 2007 to its roster.
Just an observation from the outside and maybe I'm the one who is crazy here. A couple of these rosters here are absolutely huge. Last time I checked there were only 9 positions out on a field, how can all these players possibly be kept happy with enough playing time for weekend tournaments? You could actually take the rosters from a couple of these teams and make a third team that would be very good.
What exactly does this purpose serve by carrying so many players? Can somebody say quality, not quantity?

18u roster - Rosters need to be large for the following reason: Vacations, college visits for uncommitted players, Showcases (PG, AFLAC, Area Code, etc...) personal time off, June draft - Last year we had 7 players drafted. And the # 1 reason is, PITCHING. You can never have enough pitchers. Especially, going into big time events (that sometimes last 1 week).

Also if you hoard prospects...no one else can have them...
Good point Blazer .... As you know, every travel team has a different philosophy -- some are in it to maximize exposure for the kids and to play some good baseball --- others are it for "maximum exposure." Not judging ... HOWEVER, we sometimes hype players beyond their actual capabilities --- We definitely need to get more input from pro scouts (Blazer's team does this well)
Just a few points I'd like to bring up about roster sizes. I don't live in Chicago or even Illinois, but I also didn't just fall off the turnip truck this morning either.
Vacation and personal time off? We have roughly 5 mos of winter or non-baseball condusive weather in our parts. Isn't that enough time off? If I was a scout or college coach and found out someone wanted to take a "vacation" during baseball season, that tells me something.
AFLAC and area code? Don't those events happen in August? Most summer seasons have been wrapped up by then.
The draft I can buy, but only for an 18 year old team.
Week long tournaments? Do you mean tournament? The PG one right?
Most of these pitchers I would assume are their hs ace's, I'm sure every one of them thinks they are one of the best, if not the best on the team. Are starters going to be left in to complete games or given their 2-3 innings so others can pitch to be seen as well? Of course everyone wants to win, but is that really what it is all about? Most of these kids will forget about the tournaments they won in a couple years but could have their lives changed by getting into games and performing in front of the right people. I think a lot of that is forgotten in the name of making the program look good. Are you doing this to make the kids look good or yourself?
One last thing, is anyone's word good anymore? If you commit to a team what are you doing even talking to another team? What is that team doing talking to you? Pretty arrogant if you ask me. Especially if your going to accuse other teams of doing the same thing you are.
I don't mean any disrespect here, I just think sometimes promises might be made to people that will never be able to be kept with rosters that size. The team will not miss out or suffer, but the player might miss out on an opportunity while he sits watching others.
Good call Blazer!

Seed,
Seems like you've got a long list of things to say regarding the post of 34/33. Perhaps you should have PM'd him. Oh well, I'll never let an opportunity to respond to more backhanded accusations go unanswered. The heck with my New Year's resolutions.
PG is not the ONLY week long tournament held in the country, hardly. For example,an 18U team is probably looking forward at least as much to the Connie Mack series. I'm sure your son must be playing in this tournament. If you figure in the state tournament, the regional tournament and then the week long finale in New Mexico (if you're fortunate enough to get there) you're probably talking about almost 3 weeks of playing Connie Mack baseball. When you add these events to the WWBA in Georgia you'd better have plenty of arms.
My son's 17U team is playing in the West Coast Summer Series in San Diego and we'll be out there for a week. As far as a 17U team having players that miss some time to attend a college camp (as mine is doing at Stanford) or a showcase event,a team must have a roster large enough to allow players to make these important visits. Now, I see that your son is being recruited by "the biggest and best schools in the land", so attending a college camp or showcase wouldn't be on his list of things to do. Most boys, including my own, are not in that position. I didn't fall off the turnip truck either.

The tournament in East Cobb is long, too. TT was down there last year and the rain probably lengthened it considerably.
Seed's comments are more applicable to an 18U team but everyone needs to load up on pitching and have some extra players available for emergencies. Didn't TT get beat by Burr Ridge last year because most of their players were unavailable?
PS: My son is a fetus, isn't being recruited by anyone of note, and will attend any events that he is invited to and wants to attend.

My Roster is split between two teams, one will have some 07s' mixed in with some D1 kids. The other will be my eighteens with a couple 07's, and when we go to GA for the PG National at the 17u we will put together a mixed group from all over. Not all Orioles. For the most part both teams will play with each other the whole season though.
As far as Pitching goes, I am comfortable in a 5 game tourny with 9 Pitchers. We will take 10-11 to Ga when we go at the 17u and the 18u.
Seed,
What I try to do is get my front line guys or starters an early show, like 2-3 innings(like a bull pen day) then bring them back on the following 3rd day and let them go. Like a Thurs -Sunday. It gives them two showings and I get to use my best twice. It varies though. Pitch counts, who we are playing and the score of the games , and all that good stuff.

A man with a plan. I like it!
Don't mean to sound like I'm giving backhanded accusations. But, taking a vacation in the middle of the baseball season? YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! I guess, if he played on a Legion team. Take that vacation in December or January when the weather is less than nice here. I can understand college camps or showcases for U17 players. But for graduated seniors that are at that point less than 3 mos from starting college? What kind of a college will they end up at?
Hey, I could be all wrong here, it wouldn't be the first time. Just ask my wife. But I'm still scratching my head on this one.

Any tournament, college camp or showcase that my son is part of is the greatest vacation I could ever take. I even love watching him practice.
Last summer my son attended the PG Academic Showcase which ran concurrently with the PG Unsigned Seniors Showcase. I certainly don't have the numbers, but for those seniors who attended, and ended up playing college ball as a result, I'm sure they are glad that their summer coach let them take a long weekend off.

Carrying a lot of players is an apparent necessity for Travel Teams. If you are a good, but not great player you may not get the playing time you need to improve unless kids take off....and a lot of them do. Not for vacations very often, but for camps, showcases, etc.
A better question may be is if it is better to be a very good player on a great team (limited playing time) or a very good player on a good team and getting a lot of playing time.

Blazer & Seedthrower, There is no crying in Baseball!! Blazer How do you Horde players? I've heard of hording money, food, material possessions, maybe? Hording players, is it not up to the player and parents to ultimately decide what team is best for their situation? Is sports not about you getting your best players and challenging my best? Got to love ompetition, if you can't stand the heat get out. Seedthrower, What's your angle? You complain about your son throwing 137 pitches in a game, then comment about teams roster sizes, that can prevent your sons situation. Your Quality vs quantity commment was comical. I was in Kenosha to see Top Tier dismantle a Wisconsin team, they had no problem with quality or quantity. Maybe you son was on the losing end of one of those games or did not make the team? My son played for TT two years ago, is now playing in college, both great experiences. Todd, Shaun and Marty while not always agreeing with their coaching methods, has done as much as anyone to promote their program, players and Baseball to the benefit of all players. I wish your son the best, sounds like a nice player. Do not let ego get in the way, my college coach did not like interfering parents, they get paid to make decisions. Duece Doc, some common sense, sounds like a well thought out plan, if you carry 10-11 pitchers. How many players are you taking total? Carefully you will may be crucified for Hording...
We will go with 11-12 positions, keep in mind that a couple are two way plyers. We will be somewhere around 21 guys when we go South.
Spare catcher, and a young one in the bullpen. Spare OF, Spare corner guy/DH, I do not problems with playing time, and yet keep them fresh. My bench for the most part understands their roles.

Blazer & SeedThrower – you must be neighbors.
It’s pretty funny… We are going to have 21 players on our 17u roster and 25 on our 18’s.
Blazer and SeedThrower think we are hording players. Hmmmm
I went to the websites of a few teams in Illinois and they had the following on their rosters:
McHenry Hurricanes (17u) – 20 players
Orland Sparks (17) – 26 players
SI Bullets (18u) – 22 players
SeedThrower you think deucedoc is the only team with a plan (or is there some type of connection)
If deucedoc states that he is having 10-11 pitchers on his roster for a PG event. Wouldn’t that make him carry 20+ players? However, SeedThrower makes a comment that he is a man with a plan.
Maybe, you boys have something else up your crawl. You certainly can PM me with what is really on your minds.
SeedThrower,
You think it is unbelievable that a player would go on a short vacation during the summer?
What about the kid that has been told that he is going to visit his grandfather for his 90th birthday?
What about the kid that has to leave to go to his sister's wedding?
What about the kid that is going to visit his brother at overnight camp, who he has not seen in 4 weeks?
What about the kid that has to go on a cruise with the rest of his family and grandparents for a family reunion?
These are a few reasons why some Top Tier players missed some tournaments last year.
Don’t worry about where our kids go to college they all seem to be doing fine.
It seems that you have missed the boat and maybe your kid has his hands full living up to your expectations.
Blazer and SeedThrower, your statements are offensive. Stop whining and put it out on the field.
We have built a fine organization – DEAL WITH IT!!!

I don't know where the connection thing is coming from, but I think you can find him and his son at the web meetings. I was asked a simple question. So I answered, and that is what we do , I don't care what others do..
I was actually going to PM you but since you brought me into this I figured I would post public as well. I would like to get this straight, I have absolutley no idea who seedthrower is, it sounds as if 33/34 does though. Of course I know Blazer from having paths cross on the field. But I have no ties with his club either.
I think its time that a few people involved with the kids from our area really get a grip on what it is we are supossed to be doing. Developing and exoposing. Some just developing and others just exposing. The only plan I have is that we , John Cangelosi myself and a few others are going to provide a place where good players can come and learn the game. And that includes our behavior away from the field. Called a program.
Told my wife I am the man with the plan and she had different plans for me, dishes..
I plan on this, getting my club ready to play every day we take the field. We will play hard from start to finish and we will be as professional as HS players can act. Not play but act.. Win or lose the other team will walk away knowing they just played a class organazation. That is the plan, pretty simple.
Seedthrower whoever the heck you are, High expectations are a good thing, set the goals high and set them where they are realistic. Keep encouraging with as much positive as you can, if your forcing the issue on the kid then its time to re evaluate your methods, but I highly doubt that.
Why is everything on this site when it comes to the HS or the Travel teams so confrontational??? Its just a game, one we love, but lets keep in mind that these are kids still, kids who need to be taught and led in the right direction. They for the most part have not even started the journey yet.
Now I know where Smokey gets "Keep it Teal"
The sad thing about this is they have to read this stuff.. I can understand when kids act like kids, where I get lost is when the adults have to act like kids.
See you guys when we put it on the field...

FYI, any conclusions drawn from these lists and who's "best in the state" is skewed at best. LOL! I seem to remember some type of reference to that in this thread. I just wanted to remind posters that several of the "best" in our area don't play ball in Illinois during the summer. Some like my SS last year played their summer ball for teams out of St. Louis. I'm sure that the same can be said for those players along the Indiana, Iowa, or Kentucky borders. Also, don't discount that in the Southern portion of the state, Legion ball is still big. JMHO!
ducedoc - the "dishes" line is a CLASSIC!

I've had about all I can stand...
It is interesting to see who got agitated when I made a simple comment about hoarding players...
I didn't single anyone out but you TT guys got all hot under the collar...wonder why that is?
As for building a great program...good for you...how come you constantly have to remind people of how good you are...methinks it's a case of small man's syndrome.
Your "program" is only as good as other people think it is...not how good you tell everyone it is.
I learned early in this process that the ones who constantly crow about how good their own team is are likely in this game for the wrong reasons. You'll very rarely hear me talk about our program, it's accomplishments or what we've done...That's because the accomplishments of our program have nothing to do with me...they are completely attributed to the hard work and talent of our kids...some of us on here forget that it's about the kids and not the "program", name recognition, or the adults running the show.
If and when I do post something about our players' accomplishments I'm usually embarrassed to do it.
That doesn't seem to be the case with certain groups...
As for anyone having a "great" program...that is not for me to say. All I know is our program strives to:
1. Prepares kids for playing at the next level
2. Finds or attempts to find each kid a home at the next level
3. Handles itself with class on and off the field (in the hotels, with umpires, in the community, respects other teams, respects property)
4. Allows the kids to have fun.
5. Teaches kids about the game at the higher levels
6. Teach kids how to play and succeed in a team setting at a high level
7. Get our kids in front baseball's "decision makers" (Scouting directors, cross-checker, D1 head coaches, etc)
8. Play every game hard.
Nothing makes me happier than coming off the field after a game (win or lose) and having a scout or college coach say, "I love the way your team plays the game..." It's happened a bunch and every time I still take it as the ultimate compliment.
No amount of message board crowing will replace the true respect of people in the baseball community.
That's what OUR program is about...
Blazer,
When you write you remind me of Popeye. Remember his famous quote, "that's all I can stand, I can't stands no more". Haha.

I am sure you have a fine organization like all the other teams that have been mentioned in this forum.
No one is doubting that. I am sure you are proud of your teams accomplishments and what your team stands for. I am also sure that you are the first person to stand up for your team as am I.
I made a comment about the size of our roster and your post came after mine about hording players.
I apologize if you were not directing that to our program.

"Playhard" is a ghost from the past, unless he uses a different screen name now. Playhard is a nutty , funny, controversial, knowledgeable, great orator of the game of baseball. A great guy!!!! He has a gorgeous lady friend (can you say HOT), unless he finally married her, or she dumped him (maybe she likes older guys) .
I met 'playhard' once and I'll never forget him. He has a definite passion for the game. I hope to hear from him again some day. We had some goodtimes on these boards a few years ago!!!

When reading over some of the comments about "hoarding players" I began to think what difference is there between these travel teams and a college team? Answer-- ?????????
What size of rosters do the colleges have? How many pitchers do they carry? Looks like Deuce Doc has a plan?and as long as these coaches make it clear to the kids prior to their decisions on how they plan to use the roster....IT IS THE PARENTS DECISION AND KIDS DECISION....if they are unhappy during the season in Travel Ball what are they going to be like when they go to college as a FROSH on a 25 man roster?
Your competitive juices are FLOWING and the season is just around the corner...cant wait to see some of these teams discussed on this website play......

FYI - A team does not "horde" players, but it can "hoard" players. Now, if it "hoards" enough players, it would have a "horde" of "hoarded" players. I'm available to correct any other word use or grammar for you all... PS - see below.

"Why is everything on this site when it comes to the HS or the Travel teams so confrontational??? Its just a game, one we love, but lets keep in mind that these are kids still, kids who need to be taught and led in the right direction. They for the most part have not even started the journey yet.
Now I know where Smokey gets "Keep it Teal"
The sad thing about this is they have to read this stuff.. I can understand when kids act like kids, where I get lost is when the adults have to act like kids."
Outstanding observation and it is the main reason why I very seldom post or even read what is going on in the Illinois forum any more. It is a true shame that this forum has gone from be informative and helping, to being about who is better at this or who is better at that.
I have always been one to believe that "talk is cheap", "good player and teams don't need to tell anybody how good they are, because their opponents know" and "if you have to say it, you probably can't do it"...
deucedoc, also your plan, hopes and goals for your team are all the same things I did and used with my teams for the 8 years I coached them...1 in the minors and 13 still in college...it seemed to work.
I never had the most talent but we never shyied away from playing anyone and all knew who we were after the game...win or lose

TAR,
Great post. I've been reading so much about "hording" that I thought there must have been an official spelling change in Websters Collegiate Dictionary.

What does the 2006 summer roster fot the Norwood blues look like?
Mde5,
I am in agreement with your philosophy 1oo%.
You have obviously coached teams that had the right mind set. Transplanted to AZ sounds pretty good to me right now, Its 0 degrees out side my door without the wind chill.
I called one of my 07 players , at the end of last years season, he played against us at SIU and threw against us. I shocked the kid and his parents because when I saw him throw, it was most likley his worst outing ever. Hammered would have been an understatement. But, I was more interested in the way he handled himself and the way he composed himself in the beating. Just watching him throw you knew he was good, but I saw a kid who kept coming at us in his worst moment. I then knew he was my kind of guy.
To me the words of a coach that has been in the business as long as you have are the words that are important. The fact that I am even thinking on the same lines , I will take as a compliment. The only thing you can do as a player and a coach is keep trying to get better. All the other garbage is exactly that, garbage.
