smokeyboy,

most teams should be set, but things happen up until the first pitch. have a few friends that play and even though they have committed to specific teams, they are being contacted by other programs trying to acquire their services. don't know if that happens everywhere. i believe once someone has committed they should not be contacted. just my opinion and nothing else.
I think some coaches are used to having their players poached and make the necessary adjustments early in the process.

Switching summer teams is a lot like giving a verbal commit to a school (to hold your spot), then reneging when a "better" choice comes along .... and so on and so on until you are playing for the team that you wanted to play for in the beginning.
Ratboy,

What do you consider early in the process?

I feel when you make a call to a kid, the first thing you ask is if he is committed. At that point he says he is, it should be a dead issue. There is nothing more to say. I think this is happeninig , just not with everyone.

As far as the advise with the verbals, that is the last comparison I would make. Comparing a college coach who is working with a budget and trying to fill needs for next years team and a Summer coach are pretty far apart. IMO
There is something to be said about someones word. What, my word is different then my signature? Not to me..

Smokey, if this is how it is I won't be doing dishes long, something better will come along. But I know there isnt..
Dueucedoc,

I would hope that the coaches, for the few teams
that exist at your age level, would not be trying to convince a player(s)that they should
go back on their commitment to one coach and join another team. My son(s) would never be allowed to play for a coach that expected him to act in such a manner.
Padre asks about the 18 year old Berwyn Bulldogs and why nobody has mentioned them? Unfortunately none of the players on this team are promoted by some of the "hype machines" out there. It's just a solid team that has over a .750 winning percentage since it's inception back in 2000 as 12 year olds, and has played against the best during these years.

There still is a core of players from the original group including the Scott & Brian Householder, Jordan Higgins (St. Joes), Zach Clements, Luke Manno & Izzy Martinez (Morton HS). A few years back, with the dismantling of the Orland Magic they picked up Brett Buckley (Mt Carmel), Sean Boyle (Provy) Mike Buchler & Mark Andersen (Sandburg). This group has now been together for about 3 or 4 years.

Couple of other player added over the last year or two such as Steve Ferguson (TF South) Chris Kubinski & Nick Gorski (Provy) have added to this team. Not a huge roster, just enough to make sure to field a competitive team for any tournament. I understand there might be one or two other original Bulldogs coming back for this year to add to the mix of talent.

Over the last several years the Bulldogs have played many of the teams listed earlier in this post (IN Yankees, Springfield Riflemen, Kenosa Indians, Lombard Lightning etc) and if they didn't beat them they definately gave them a game!

Looking forward to another great year before the boys head off to college
"EARLY IN THE PROCESS"
Your team likes to carry 15 players for the summer (hypothetically) but you know that somehow you will lose 2-3 kids during the school year, so you invite 18-20 kids to be part of the team. You might also experience "superstars" quitting midseason because they don't like their standing.

As far as switching teams goes:
Brian Lambert is listed on the Orioles' roster, and Top Tier's. Dillon Roark - listed on two rosters, and the same applies to Tyler Ladendorf.
I don't advocate the practice, but for the sake of dialogue ...
suppose Lambert goes with TT -- the Orioles will want to replace him, so do they take a 17U player (who is still switching teams) or contact another player?
My example would work like this (and it happens a lot):
Player is talking to coaches at a solid D3, says "I'm in". Time passes and he is approached by a D2 or NAIA school and realizes that he can play at a higher level and get scholarship money, so he tells them that he wants to play there. The coach wants him to re-take the ACT to see if he can get more academic $$, so he puts off signing anything.
A D1 school realizes that they are losing a player to the draft, so they ask the kid to come take a look -- he does and decides that is where he wants to play.
To make the example more absurd - the player gets drafted late (or thinks he is likely to be drafted soon); so he ultimately opts for a JC.

Rat,

The problem is why is a kid "on" two rosters to begin with?

To me it says something about the kid or the person posting the roster…

I would never release a roster that I thought wasn't 99.9% solid (usually backed by a deposit for the season) and I really don't like to post rosters in public other than for scouts and coaches access (it becomes a shopping list for some people).

I'm sure others are the same way (about being 99.9% sure) but still there are others who will continue to call and "recruit" kids who are on another team's roster…very classless…IMO.

Once you tell a coach I'm in, there should be no more too it...period!

If you are unsure of your decision...don't commit!

If you think something better might come along.... don’t commit!

Too many parents and players have lost sight of normal decency and the value of your word...not to mention loyalty.
I agree blazer. Every kid I have on our roster has said to me personally that he is playing for us. When a kid says he is going to make that commitment I expect him to uphold it. We had a kid get called by East Cobb and he said no thanks. That was surprising. The lack of integrity that has been displayed by coaches and parents has been ridiculous.

Thanks Ratboy for clearing that up for me. In regards to Brian Lambert I want to clarify that in no why shape or form did Brian leave the Orioles on short notice. He gave me pleanty of time to make the adjustment. Brian is a class person and I enjoyed having him for the season we did. Much luck to Brian!
I know nothing was intended but I just do not want people to get the wrong impression of a very very hard working kid who was caught in the middle of ****.
From another post (from another thread by Goose, just trying to keep the subject congruent)

2006 Norwood Blues

Noth Hinsdale Central C-OF
Daker Loyola Academy P-SS
Livermore St Charle East P
Heasley Crystal Lake Central P-OF
Barbier Wheaton Warrenville South 3B-SS
Pericht Providence Catholic C
Ruffalo Wheaton Warrenville South 3B
Goebbert Hampshire P-1B
Lurhring Jacobs P-OF
simotes Providence Catholic SS-3B

Noth can mash, if not mistaken works out at Strikes. Lurhring’s a great pitcher. We played with him several years ago and got a chance to see him up close. Livermore ain’t to shabby either. The Blues are gonna surprise some people…

Duce - Sorry to hear Brian Lambert will not be playing with you. Great ball player and one of the finest young men I’ve met on the Orioles (your kids are all gentlemen). I wish Brian nothing but success and all the best. It will be interesting to see where he lands for college.

50 degree weather and starting to smell like baseball…. Uhaaa spring… is this great or what. Here we go here we go!!!!!!!!!
It has just dawned on me, after reading the last several pages of this thread, that in reality, there are, putting it mildly, some aggressive practices when it comes to recruiting HS summer travel teams. I’ve been having trouble with this competitive recruiting of players for travel teams once a player has an affiliation or made a commitment. I realize that not all travel teams are created equal. They differ in the level of local / regional / national travel, what events are attended, level and quality of instruction, the level of exposure, real or implied, and cost. Every player and parent must evaluate for themselves. It can be a daunting task. I truly and honestly believe that all involved want the best for these kids but on the other hand each and every organization wants to field a competitive winning program. This is a competitive level of ball and the name of the game is to win. A player may be torn between the promises of a high profile team vs. his current team. Remember this baseball journey is not a 100 yard dash (or 60). It is more like a marathon. IMHO the true value of these experiences are the “life’s lessons” learned along the way. That’s what I love about baseball. This travel experience is a small, but important, part of this journey. Funny thing, I remember a time when you could count these programs on one hand with fingers to spare and getting a “cup of coffee” with one of them was a big deal. As they say it was a buyers market. The other side of the coin, there are a greater number of programs available, giving a larger number of young men greater opportunity for development and exposure. Where is the concept of team? I mean these are traveling TEAMS. I grew up in an era remembering speeches by the likes of Vince Lombardi echoing “THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM!” I realize it is the reality of the times and that there is give & take / good & bad with these opportunities but at what cost? Please don’t take this as an attack on anyone’s team or program. These are just Sunday morning, caffeine induced, musing of a parent that is taking this journey, love it and the people I’m meeting along the way.

The views expressed in this diatribe do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Smokey’s staff or anyone remotely affiliated with Smokey. In fact I would like to take the opportunity to deny everything. Your honor, Smokey was never even near the place and what’s more, those are not my pants and those are most assuredly not my friends. They are merely a drunken and surly gang of hitchhikers I made the terrible, terrible mistake of giving a lift. I promise to be good, really, I swear!

We have got to play you guys this summer. Do you have your tournaments all set already. Somebody email our summer coach at fallbaseball@hotmail.com and let him kow where you'll be so we (white sox 18's) can meet you in a tourney. It would be fun to see such great talent on one team. And young....c'mon see what we can do to get us all playing in the same tourney. Bill you can work on this too....call austin or email him at above email address and see what you can do....we need to play a few games....maybe midweek games anywhere you can get a field.....i know he is looking to get some midweek games going.
Sweaty,

Midweek with this crew wont happen due to their HS Summer Teams. They will play the weekend schedule. Our 18's may want to mix it up during the week a time or two.
It was good to see you the other day, Danny looks great and I know them guys in Bloomington can't wait to get him in the mix.
I will email him and we will work something out. I have seen your 18's in a tourny or two we are in. SIU is going to be a good one.
Here are the teams. I dont have the paings in front of me or link. I will try to get it up later tonight. I only have the form sent. Woodly might have a link somewhere or might be able to post the pairings.
