I'll try to keep this short. Last son at home is 2006 grad. Mom and dad both work from home and can live anywhere. Dad retired naval officer and love Eastern Tennessee and plan to move there when son grads. Back to son...short RHP (5"10")cruises 83 now and has a couple mph in reserve; 4 pitches and knows what to do with them. Gotten hitters out consistently at all levels including WWBA Ft Myers. Also SS. Will be 3 year starter on top team in top conference in state. Very solid defense, good baserunner, not fast. 7.3 best to date. Average student did not do well early better lately. 2.2 but rising (Genetic academic late bloomer Smile). Takes ACT next month. Son just wants to play. Is there a school in TN or nearby state for a kid like this or are we barkin up the wrong tree? Any advice would be appreciated. By the way, he will be playing in Dandridge the last week of March.

There are a number of small colleges within driving distance of Dandridge - some NAIA, some DII - that might be a decent fit for your son.

Carson-Newman (DII) is "next door" to the Dandridge facility.
Tusculum (DII) is about 45 minutes away and has outstanding facilities for a school its size.
Milligan and King College are just up the road and play in a competitive NAIA league.
Lee University and Tennessee Wesleyan are very good NAIA programs down on the "other side" of Knoxville.

There's also some very good JUCO ball. Walters State is in Morristown about 30 minutes from Dandridge. They've been ranked in the top 5 in recent years.

And of course you have the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and East Tennessee State University in Johnson City playing DI.

Some of the small colleges have a decent amount of scholarship money available. If he's had success at WWBA events, then I think he'd be of interest particularly to some of the small colleges. The gpa might be an issue at a couple of the private colleges, but a good test score can overcome that.

I've lived in East Tennessee all my life. Send me a p.m if you'd like to know more.
Halfmoon - As an "outsider", I will echo Bizazz's sentiments. My '05 is going to go to JUCO in TN. We're thrilled with choice. There are many different levels and very good choices there. Weather isn't bad. Everywhere we've visited people were great. I personally am hoping he opts for a 4 year in the state when he has to make that decision. (Even if it was wearing orange Smile) Good luck!
Tenndad, Tennessee Baseball Report is a great site. I've already recommended to Halfmoon he check it out. It was actually helpful to us in making a decision on colleges.

My son is going to Hiwassee. Loves Coach Edwards. He just signed yesterday after committing a couple of weeks ago. A lot of great schools in your state. Like I've said earlier, I would love for him to stick around in that area after JUCO. We'll see down the road!
Halfmoonslider,
First, you must refine you choices to which State of Tennessee you are referring to - East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee or West Tennessee? There are three different worlds there! The folks in ET are largely hillbillies (ie. HiwaasseeVOL), the folks in MT are country music singer "wanta be's" (TennDad) and the folks in WT are largely clod stomper (FUNGO). None of these groups accept the other, thus they are largely divided and spend a lot of time "feweden'".

For a better quality of life, more cultured and refined people, and neighbors with higher IQ's you will need to travel a bit further down I-65 to God's Country - BAMA .... Cool laugh
lafmom,
Thanks for your kind compliment (and truthful) about the great state of Alabama. I live in Hartselle and spent my childhood in Athens all in the beautiful BAMA (some wrongfully refer to it as the Tennessee Valley) VALLEY. Bassfishin', huntin', flea markets, REAL baseball for 10 months out of the year ... pinto's, hamhocks, fried taters & cornbread, SWEET tea .. TRUE LIVIN' Cool

And, we admitted a long time ago that Elvis is dead. Most folks in Tennessee still claim to see him on occasions. noidea

Bama - You could leave the hamhocks off and I'm there. I actually lived the "city" of Jasper, AL for three years as a child and have lots of family there still. East TN landscape kind of reminds me of Bama - Pine trees and red soil. My son thinks he might want to play baseball for Auburn one day - my whole family cheers for the Tide - don't know how that would go over. This makes me feel like coming for a visit! Take care.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I must admit that while born a yankee, I have lived quite a bit of my adult life in Pensacola which as all ya'all know is not, in fact, in Florida, but in South Alabama. It is there that I began a two-year mission to learn to make the best biscuits and gravy in the world. It was during this time that I became cultured. I would be happy to return there when I retire-retire however I believe I am still wanted...so to quote one of my favorites, George Strait, "I'll hang my hat in Tennessee"!
Will do...I also want to reiterate (which means say again to the "clod stompers" and "hillbillies") that I will be in your great state with my son and our Tundra Cheeseheads the week of the 28th of March at the Complex just West of Jeff County High School playin in Gerald Patterson's tournament. We've got a nice big cabin near Sevierville and would surely welcome any websters to stop by, set on our porch and chat about baseball.
Bubba Halfmoon: I think that once you visit EAST Tennessee, you will not even consider middle or west. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing really "bad" about middle and west Tennessee...it's just that they are so far away from EAST Tennessee! biglaugh Perhaps I can make your tournament at the Patterson complex. Not sure if I will be able to attend son's game in North Carolina.

Have a good'un!
Bizazz,
Your point about keeping Bubba Halfmoon away from Hiwassee Vol is well taken. However, there are some things that we haven't mentioned yet in this thread that HV could assist Bubba HM with, such as:
1) Where do you buy good moonshine?
2) Where's the welfare office, will need to sign up for check immediately? (on second thought, I'd like to sign up too)
3) Forget Elvis, where can you find Festus, or better yet, Miss Kitty?
4) After welfare checks start, is that taxable income? (maybe you'd better handle that one Bizazz
