itsinthe game is correct--at home, eating donuts and drinking coffee, comfortable in the knowledge that, come next year, they will outdraw the sox regardless of how bad they are. And they will be bad for that very reason. Nobody said that being a Cubs fan was rewarding. But listening to sox fans lament their second class status even while on the verge of the ultimate prize, is still fun.
Holden Caulfield, Who said anything about “lamenting second class status”??? Roll Eyes Respect! I think it’s great that the Cubs out draw the CWS. That leaves better seats to sneak into on a bleacher ticket admission! biglaugh The only one that needs to care about attendance are the owners!?!?. noidea

Smokey, I'm with you and others on the replay issue, and I think HaverDad is on to something.
quote:
Based on piaa ump's post, which shouldn't surprise anyone, I propose that MLB add a significant (albiet minority) percentage of field manager's input (25-33%?) to these umpire evalutation formulas.

But not a small amount of input, the teams that have earned playoff bids decide who does the games. That's 8 teams from all geographic regions, it would work.

Why not let those who have been impacted the most and have had the best seats in the house decide who will judge them in the end, and then the umpire gods (supervisors) determine the specific assignments. The end result are the playoff teams have picked those to judge them.

From a fan on the 'left coast' as Future Back Momma calls us, I am quite pleased to see the White Sox doing so well thus far in the series. I'm with PIAA_ump on the replay issue and say -- you go, Jermaine Dye (a former A's stud, by the way). Making the most of every situation is what baseball is all about -- and I highly doubt that one play really does make a significant difference in a game (not counting the 1985 World Series Royals vs Cardinals)

Holden, Holden, Holden:

You won't find me griping about second class status for Chicago and second tier status for the White Sox in the city... we've got a chip on our shoulder and its motivating us straight to a World Series Championship!

This White Sox fan moved to Chicago 23 years ago and elected to become a White Sox fan instead of a Cubs fan. I'm not necessarily against the Cubs but my background was much more compatible with the South Side than the North. Yuppies were becoming the rage back then and they found the climate very likable up north. They pretty much withered down south. I just could not imagine myself as a yuppie.

So all of the comments about 'inferiority complex' and 'paranoia' really do not have an effect on me or most likely the majority of White Sox fans.

Every year that I've been a White Sox fan I've necessarily had to root for some team other than the White Sox in the World Series. I've always selected the underdog or the team that most closely resembles the White Sox.

The only exception to that was my support for the Yankees in 2001 following 9-11. That city took a severe blow for the rest of us and I felt a World Series win would pick them up.

The teams that come to mind over the last two decades or so are the Twins with Kirby, the Devil Rays, the Marlins with Ozzie in the dugout, the Dodgers with Gibson and Orel, and of course the Angels with Eckstein and the classy Scioscia at the helm. All of these teams I have really enjoyed watching and supporting in their s-c-r-a-p-p-y march towards the Championship.

It is the White Sox's turn this year and they,in my opinion, fit right in there with all of the teams I just mentioned. Ozzie is not coaching from a throne but more like a busted up park bench in some tough South Side hood. And its working well!

For those of you around the nation that can appreciate the type of team that the White Sox are give them a cheer.

The Astros are not dissimilar to the White Sox so they are to be admired also but we've been waiting much longer for a Championship They will have their ring soon enough I'm sure.

I've got to go now...my ol'Chrysler is blocking some guy's Lexus and I know my place..and lovin' it!

GO WHITE SOX!!!
URKillingMEBlue:

Thanks for your comments and support. If you admire the White Sox and their style of play then all of these controversies are not all that important.

I especially liked your comment "making the most of every situation is what baseball is all about". Can anyone at any level of baseball argue with that statement? Thanks again.

Please join me in saying ( or least in spirit )...GO WHITE SOX!!!

Scotty The Hottie, as my 12 year old daughter and her softball teammates call him, delivered big time for us. Texas...thank you very much!

On a post game interview he said somrthing along the lines of "I wonder what it must feel like to hit one out like Konerko did during a World Series game". He obviously found out!

He's a class kid and we're fortunate to have him.

Thanks again Texas!

GO WHITE SOX!!!
Here is whom the poster was referring to....Ron Kulpa is widely known as one of the best up and coming young MLB umpires. His position that he prefers baseball as it is....with the human/error factor intact is understandable and one many of us share.

FutureBack.Mom:

Thanks for your input and reasoned perspective concerning the umpiring situation in the playoffs and World Series.

If the controversial calls had never been made I would be happy. No one will ever know with certainty that the umpiring made a difference in the outcome of any series. The umps are part of the game. If you are rooting against the White Sox, who have been on the beneficial side of most of the calls so far, then you're going to be frustrated, angry, and disturbed.

I can appreciate YOUR situation being a fan of the game and being frustrated at the umpiring for the very reason that you stated. That being the professional umpires are apparently not doing as good a job as they should. Truth be told if I were in your shoes I would feel the same.

I'm a White Sox fan and I don't feel our success is in any way diminished by the umpiring in these games. Do I feel fortunate...you bet I do! And it is a much better feeling than feeling unfortunate!

Again thanks.

GO WHITE SOX!!!
itsinthegame:

Thanks for your listing of all of the technological marvels that are being used by the networks to bring the game closer to the fan.

I really don't have any problem with using this technology in this way. I just don't think that all of this marvelous stuff should be used to diminish or eliminate the umps. Just my opinion is all.

I appreciate your comments regarding your beloved Mets. In that town, you're right, I could not begin to realize what a Mets fan must endure.

Since you've been so reasonable with our White Sox by recognizing the position that they're in I'll make sure to reciprocate by rooting for the Mets next time they're in the playoffs or fighting to get there.

GO WHITE SOX!!!
Gotwood,

I appreciate the reciprocal support for my Metsies.

However - please do not hold your breath waiting for the chance to cheer my Metsies on. It could possibly be another 50 or 60 years before we are in that position.

Only exception would be if the Mets could bring Mo Vaughn out of retirement - and get Burnitz back too. Then - we would have a chance.

And if we grab Joe McEwing again - watch out National League.

Gotta agree with above posts, that one bad call does not a game make (excluding Kansas City vs. St. Louis), the pitcher was wild as hell and probably would have walked him anyway. I don't want Instant Replay, I am a traditionalist, and like the game the way it is played now. I think bad calls are a part of baseball, as well as good calls. Must be a tough job, because no matter what you call, only 50% of the people will agree with you. No big deal, it was a great game anyway. Hopefully the Astros can make a series of it, starting with tonights game. I don't have a "Dog in this Fight", my team was eliminated along time ago, but I love to watch all the drama play out, even if Tim McCarver is calling the action!
Gotwood. YOur explanation for Sox fandom is odd given my own history. I grew up south of Madison Street. I was a rabid sox fan until 1983--right about the time you moved to Chicago. Why did I change? Because I felt that the new owners with their "golden boxes" and other trappings of yuppyism ruined the essence of what the sox, particularly Bill Veeck, stood for. I figured that if the owners desire was to turn the sox into the cubs then I might as well root for the real thing. I've never looked back. The funny thing is, there is little or no difference as to who is a fan of which team. Just as many yuppies, et al. in the Sox crowd as there are in Wrigely. Difference is, the sox' yuppies only show up for the playoffs and world series. Cub fans show up no matter what. One more thing, as a baseball fan I appreciate their style of play and the fact that they've done this on about half the money the cubs spend. But not enough to reverse 22 years of hate! Any Cub fan who jumps ship just doesn't get it.
Holden:

You've certainly got a different perspective on this than I do and I truly respect that.

I'm sure that if I were here during the Bill Veeck era than I too may have quite different feelings. Everything that I know about Veeck would have made me a big admirer and supporter.

I really identify much more with the team on the field than the management. Ozzie, in my estimation, has really managed to roll the whole White Sox world (small and maligned as it is) into an exciting World Series contender.

My only real problem with the Cubs is the easy resignment of most of their fans to always 'wait for next year'. That and this absurd clinging to jinxes.

I actually admired Dusty quite alot for coming in and stating that there is nothing to these jinxes. The rest of Cubdom must get to this point also.

Cub fans should demand that they have a winner. If the White Sox should manage to win it all this year then I will be in a much better mood to support the Cubs should they be in the same position.

As good a feeling this is with the White Sox now I really wish that the same could be experienced by Cub fans soon...they were close recently and if it hadn't been for Moises Alou out there protesting too long the Cubs probably would have been in the same position that the White Sox are now.

I enjoy the 'back and forth' with you.

I'll amend my last question to ask how many can you fit into your 'keyed'scratched, graffitti laden , and feces spattered HUMMER. If it happens to have sheepskin seat covers I should add blood spatters too just to keep the PETA folks from having a fit.

Long ago I read 'The Diary of Anne Frank'...how long before we are graced with the tome...'rz1..Recollections of a Sane Man in the Midst of the Mad!'

I wonder if soxnole has had any luck searching on-line for 'Detroit Style Halloween Celebrations...the Expert Approach' or '101 Halloween Ideas to Leave Your Neighbors Feeling Motown'.

I enjoy the banter.

Holden:
One of my sons played on the same travel team with one of Kenny's sons and I had a few brief opportunities to talk with Kenny and watch his style with the kids. He impressed me with his knowledge and high standards...it really was easy to pick up these qualities in him even from such brief encounters.

My wife and I had a chance to get to know Kenny's father even more and he is an interesting gentleman to say the least. I am not at all surprised by Kenny's success having met his father.

Not everyone was a Kenny fan or even an Ozzie fan but it's hard to argue about the results that they have acheived so far and hopefully beyond. Reinsdorf has to be credited with bringing these successful guys into the fold.
The umpires had nothing to do with the poor location of the pitch that Lidge threw that ended up defeating the Astros.

Get real, umpires make bad calls its part of baseball. A championship caliber team overcomes obstacles and adversity because they are "matured" and "experienced" enough to understand the nature of the game.

The Astros need to "bring-it" and get-in-the-face of the SOX, sort-of-speak. Play the game and win and stop belly-aching.

That's my advice to the Astros.

I'm still predicting Astros in 7.
Holden, I learned not to care about what the professional team owners do being a Chicago Bears fan after they fired “Da Coach”! Mad

I will admit that Reinsdorf and Einhorn pissed me off over the years; firing Harry Carary, yanking the games off of WGN-TV & put them on pay-TV, and Reinsdorf taking leading role in forcing the 1994 player’s strike that ended the season in early August. pull_hair It’s just “bidness”. No sweat! However, I never even entertained the thought of turning my Silver & Black in for Cubby Blue. Changing from Falstaff (I’m dating myself) & kosher dogs to sushi and margaritas must have been a gastric nightmare? I just don’t get it????? noidea

BTW did you know that the Cubs at one time were called the Chicago White Stockings…? Wink

Ramrod, agree with what you said except the Astros in 7…. Cool

Keeping with the spirit of the ump discussion….. “I try not to break the rules but merely to test their elasticity.” ~ Bill Veeck

GO CHIGAGO WHITE SOX!!!!
Smokey:

Nice post.

The moves that ownership made over the recent past that were not popular with the fans were met with empty seats...and that's the way it should be!

White Sox ownership has not been perfect but as a fan you can't let them totally dampen your enthusiasm...or is it curb your enthusiasm?

Ownership has obviously made some right moves recently!

Sit back and enjoy. Fill the seats so to speak!

GO WHITE SOX!!!
Smokey......Falstaff??? The Thirst Slaker? Ralph Faucher's favorite beer? I'll take a fully kreusened (sp?) beer from God's Country any day of the week. Of course they ruined that one when G. Heilleman sold out.

I guess I'm just not good at overlooking the owners. It may be a reflection on just how fanatical I was about the sox at that time. It felt like treason of the highest order.
gotwood - I heard some of the rumors about Tribune selling Cubs. From the baseball standpoint I hope they do. Not that they haven't spent $, they've spent lots (foolishly) the last 6-7 years but it's time for a change.
From a shareholder perspective, please don't sell. Cubs are Tribune's cash cow and only asset that continually appreciates. Sears sold its wildly profitable credit card unit and is left with underperforming stores. I know, that talk belongs on msnbc.com.
denisr400:

You're right about this item being better suited for msnbc.com but as much as we may dislike it baseball, at least at the upper levels, is a business.

With that being said there is no reason to manage a business so that it is unsuccessful. In my book a park full of satisfied fans is the measure of good management.

The Tribune has managed to keep the Cub's fans happy without a winner so I won't knock them too hard. It's difficult to argue with a consistently full house.

Personally you're going to have to give a strong effort at winning to keep my interest. Reinsdorf, Williams, and Ozzie have delivered.

GO WHITE SOX!!!
GO WHITE SOX!!!
Why do we have more than one umpire in baseball?
A game can be called by the one ump behind the plate. It is hard but it can be done and with these games maybe more accurately. You have all these umpires so you can get the calls right!!! When the guys on field are incapable of getting it right then you need instant replay. You can make up the time lost by not granting a timeout to the batter after every pitch.
