Access to HS baseball fields

I’m curious about how other schools are set up for fan accessibility to HS varsity baseball fields. The school where I scored for the past 8 years was one of the very best I’ve ever encountered, but the school I’ll be scoring at next year is one of the worst. They’re both in the same school district and less than 4 miles apart as the crow flies. When my kid was playing HS ball 10 years ago, getting to the fields, even if they were out in the back 40 was no big deal. You just drove to the...

4bagger, Interesting first post! How did you figure out who this pitcher is and where he was going to college? I don't remember him mentioning it on here. I don't see a problem with your post, but just curious why your very first post was this one. There could be many reasons for a lack of innings in addition to those he mentioned. We can not see his other pitches (would love to), or his ability to command the strike zone. The one obvious thing and I didn't need to see the radar gun readings...

Re: Long Toss for a catcher

My son was instructed by a pro coach that there are two parts of long toss, both of which should be of equal duration - the spreading out period in which you "air it out" (long motion, high arc, crow hop at farthest point), this is the stretching out of the entire arm as well as the upper body - then the closing part in which you'd throw on a line (the strengthening part). The "air balls" go strictly against the grain of a cool teenager, but my son has had great benefits from this technique,...

Re: College Outfield velocity

Vance34 ·
Guys, the outfielders velocity on a radar gun isn't useful unless you put that guy on the mound. I have seen many guys throw 90 plus from the outfield yet have below avg. arms to well below avg. arms. The reason for this is that an outfielder needs to have on line carry without any tail or run. The outfield arm needs to be long in back with a big circled arc. Just to throw 90 from the outfield doesn't warrant an avg to above avg. arm. I have watched many guys throw 90 from the outfield yet...

Throwing Program This program is designed to condition and build arm strength over an extended time period. The program is designed to avoid throwing too much, too hard, too soon! By completing the program, arms will be ready for the practices and early season games, and will greatly reduce the risk of injury. The first part of the program consists of a...

Re: Pitching

StyleMismatch ·
The way I learned to 'long toss' was to (after stretching and warming up) start out at a comfortable distance from your throwing partner, and make 10 good throws. Back up 10 to 15 feet and make 10 more good throws. Keep doing this until you've reached your maximum distance (throwing with a 'crow hop'). Then work back in to your starting point. Concentrate on making good, accurate, line drive throws. At the longer distances there will naturally be an arc, but don't settle for rainbow throws.

I would think they could provide you with that info but they had a 1st rounder in Scherzer, they have another one this year in Crow, #1 guy in Cape Cod League. I think a lefty went in the 2nd or 3rd in Scherzers year and they have some more on campus. Also, believe they hosted a regional after being 2nd in big 12 last year, so they are pretty good I d say. I think they must work pretty hard to compete in that conference.

Re: What's a good velocity from shortstop?

baseball4lyfe10 ·
I definitely wouldn't say I took a crow hop, but I knew I was being clocked so I probably took an extra step and tried to put a little more oomph in it than usual. I bet on my normal quick release I'd probably be anywhere from 77-80 though.

Re: What are the velocities of your HS team rotation?

CADad ·
MTS, Then the ability to throw a ball 90 mph is there. You just can't get a ball to go that far without throwing it about 90 mph unless you have the wind behind you, are taking the starting point of the crow hop rather than the release point of the throw, including the roll, etc. It isn't all that unusual for a player to have the arm strength and not be able to bring it to the mound. We've got a pitcher like that who I gunned at 83 max. My son who hits 83 max fairly easily and who I've...

He can throw it field goal to field goal from release. He does the Jaeger approved version of the crow-hop. I believe I've seem him have more velocity making a throw from the 5-6 hole to 1st base than pitching.

Sluggo, I think in the field they create a lot more momentum or forward motion, especially in the outfield with a crow hop. My son has always thrown 5 mph faster from a crow hop than pitching.

Re: What are the velocities of your HS team rotation?

It depends on your position whether or not to use a crow hop. I would think as a position player, you would want to simulate the type of throwing that you would do in a game (i.e crow hop). For a pitcher, it would make sense NOT to use a crow hop when long tossing.
