Coach A, Very good post! Linear, Burn out! Man, does that bring back memories. Don’t know what it has to do with a catchers pop time, but thanks for the memories. By the way, are there some standard rules for burn out? We never hurried the throws, just tried to knock the other guys glove off. When I think burn out, I remember John Yanda, he was an older kid on my block that had a very strong arm that he would use to absolutely punish me. We had some serious games of burn out! Re: Focus Issues
I don't think anyone can truly ever "perfect" pitching mechanics because quite frankly, the perfect pitching mechanics haven't truly been discovered yet. Everyone has their own opinion on things and everyone has different things that work for them. In my opinion, at a young age such as the OP's son, the most important aspect of his pitching career is consistency. Whether that consistency has to do with velocity, location, movement, arm speed, foot landing, anything. Everything needs to be...

Re: Why am I not standing out?
Where are you in terms of the other 4 tools? How much speed do you have, how good are your hands, how's the arm strength and do you hit for average? Reason I ask is there is more to the game than just hitting for power but some of these things can't be taught or they can only be taught to a certain degree. Guys who can crush baseballs are doing something most people can't do so they get looked at more hoping they can be taught the other stuff. Best example is why teams give those who can...

Re: 10 year old throws 150+ pitches-again
Actually many pro pitchers have ulnar ligament and nerve issues then shut down to rehab, hoping to avoid surgery, most will pitch with bad ligaments unless it becomes too painful and grouchy. Same way with college pitchers, it's really a bummer to have to take time off after you have worked so hard to get where you wanted. Yes the operation is successful but it still takes a pitcher a while to come back. Major (notice I said major) shoulder surgery usually signals an end to a pitchers...

Re: 10 year old throws 150+ pitches-again
It is true that no one really knows exactly when an injury can occur all the time. But, as we learn more we are beginning to see a trend in TJ surgery plateuing at the pre HS ages. Injuries tot he elbow and shoulder almost always occur due to overuse. But overuse can varry from one player to the next, especially at the youth age. Pain is the number one sign that the arm is getting injured. Pitchers have been conditioned from a young age to learn to pitch through the pain. They have also...

I believe you Bum because I did see some guys that really looked good and threw very hard with command...however, I did see several guys that threw 81, 83, 85 and 87 that 'couldn't hit the broad side of a barn' let alone anything remotely called a strike zone. The guys who seemed to top 85/87 or so, did seem to demonstrate good command/control.

Re: 2 Strike Approach... Yes or no?
There are different approaches to hitting...some coaches like their kids being aggressive swinging for the fences while others like them to be more methodical by making a pitcher throw them a first strike. But, I think there is not a coach alive that who likes to see their players taking a third called strike on a dead red fastball. When I was coaching the little guys during one year I had to institute a ‘five pushup’ rule. That is for every third strike while looking you owed me 5 pushups...

Re: Long Toss , versus Bullpen and building velocity.
No absolutely not. Countless others before me have been using this approach for eons. Bob Feller is one who comes to mind. Didn't he practice his throwing inside a barn at night after farm chores? Didn't he also not have one of the most electric arms in the business? I believe he was once clocked with an army device throwing at 98 mph at the plate! That would mean that he was throwing out of the hand at like 103-105!! And all that from training inside a barn....after farm chores at night!!!

Re: Long Toss , versus Bullpen and building velocity.
gingerbread, You don't seriously believe that the only throwing Feller did as a kid was just done in a barn, do you? If so, you might want to do some research on the man, along with other players from that era.
