We just need to learn to prioritize better, it seems that it’s ok to kill animals for food and hide for our baseball gloves, but not for betting on who dies first in a ring. Maybe if the cooock fighters or dog fighters could justify that they were using the roosters feather for hats or down to keep us warm it would be ok. Or if the dog fighters could say that they just raise the dogs for food and the dog that wins the most taste the best and its ok. In some countries they eat dog, cats and...

A lot of missing info here in your scenerio. What type of program is the HS? What kind of expertise does this coach have? What is the track record for pitchers? Generally speaking, and Lord knows I don't know much, we have never tried to change a pitcher during tryouts. In fact, we state that we are NOT GOING TO COACH them the 3 days of tryouts. It comes down to what they know etc. and simply put, we don't want to mentally destroy them if they are doing things that we might consider changing...

What position does your son play? I want you to consider this for a moment.. the odds against a position player from Wyoming are astronomical. Now, it can be done BUT -- BUT -- please consider having your son concentrate on pitching only. It is the one baseball position that can be trained absent...

There are a lot of good points made here. I'm not sure that there is any one thing to blame or any one thing to bless. It does seem that it is easier for the media to get these stories out there. What used to go on behind the barn stayed pretty close to the farm, perhaps only disclosed long after the fact, when the perpetrator was looking back, chuckling at the mistakes of his or her youth. However, now, not only is misinformation dispensed at a rapid rate, but there is instantaneous self...

These are all extremely well-thought and well-written thoughts on what the heck is going on. I'd like to add my thoughts to the mix. I think a lot of it has to do with what P&CMom said-- There don't seem to be many consequences anymore---and it doesn't just start when kids grow up to be in college. It isn't happening in the grade schools, either. I know I'm dating myself when I remember the days of writing 1000 times--in perfect cursive--after school--"I will not (insert bad thing)".

Re: Parental input...need help/answers

I think it comes down to learning a core set of pitches before starting on a different pitch set that requires drastically different wrist and arm positions. I think that is the real issue. It's not that teaching a curve ball intrisically hurts a kids arm. The problem arises when kids try to throw a curve without mastering the proper throwing technique for the other pitches. Lets face it, we have all seen kids out there that can rifle bullets but can't hit the broad side of a barn with that...

Hubby and son tore out the deck in our first backyard and built a cage. In NOR. CA., yards were very small in our neighborhood, so cage took over entire backyard. They got a Batting Tudor whiffleball machine. That thing can flat out bring it from 30-40 ft. Throws Knuckleballs, too. Then they rebuilt cage and went with a Atec Machine that can throw the live baseballs or rubber balls. So as soon as that was completed, we moved of course. In the Midwest, we got some acreage. Bum, I'm at the the 2011/15U World Wood Bat tournament that PGstaff's organization is running this week. The quality of teams varies considerably, but some of the best teams in the country are here. No pitcher at this tournament is trying to "dominate with" with only a fastball. Good hitters at this age can pound high 80's fastballs--if they know it's coming. Every pitcher needs an offspeed (change up or curve) pitch to keep hitters off balance. The available evidence suggests that a high...

No but anyone that had any kind of connection to Sandusky should be banned from any kind of sports program for the rest of their lives. Anyone with direct knowlege of the incidents should go to jail. Any retired individuals with knowlege of what went on should forfeit any and all pensions and benefits perminanantly. Giving Penn State the death penalty, while quick would just hurt people not involved in any way with this tragety. It is closing the barn door after the horses got out.

Think about this though, it's no different when a CEO runs a business to the ground, the ones who suffer when the business goes under are the workers. The workers who would have no clue what's going on in the ivory tower. They get screwed the most while the CEO gets rewarded a multi-million dollar golden parachute for his efforts and moves over to another board getting paid a multimillion dollar salary do do it all over again.

CoachB25 also makes a great point about space for other drills. In our facility (a barn the county lets us use) we hang two nets in the corner and next to the wall.
