While schools with combinations of good/great baseball and great academics exist (e.g., Rice, Stanford, Vandy); they do not exist on the power D1 level if you are a baseball player. Except for the very, very few, combining a science/engineering major with baseball at the power D1s is impossible. Proof can be found by researching the majors of the baseball players attending those great academic powerhouses (pay attention only to majors of the jrs and srs -- the fr and sophs havent yet chosen...

IMHO these two points are the two most important points we've learned from trial and error during our recruiting process. I would include pre-med/pre-law studies in there along with science/engineering. It comes down to time, and a student needs more time with these majors because of the academic competition and content. The difference between 56 D1 games and 40 D1 games between these two D1 levels is huge in a 13 week period. Also the number and schedule of practices, conditioning &...

Nice Job Monstor! I would check out the Headfirst baseball camp as one option. I would go to the Virginia camp. http://www.playheadfirst.com/sports_national.jsp I would also go to US News and world report college rankings and find target schools. It seems like at least one or two of the schools in the SCIAC would have a stronger sci/eng program, but son't know for sure. Is Cal-Poly-SLO a DII or DI? Thanks for the input everyone. It sounds like I'm not really missing any schools. Caltech does not give any admission preference to athletes, so I don't think he would get in there. Most of the kids there have nearly a 1600 SAT and many science or math accolades. Harvey Mudd would only work if the coach can assist his admission, which I got the impression he could. Cal Poly Pomona is a DII with engineering, but a lessor academic school. It is my son that prefers the west coast and the warmer...

My son also had a great visit last week with the coach, and also wants to visit the campus. I talked with the father of a DIII volleyball player, and he was at Rose Hulman this fall for a tournament. He toured the campus with his '09 football son and they raved about the baseball field, and the athletic facilities in general. If you look at the baseball team's record since Coach Jenkins arrived, they have been so consistent. At this point, very impressive.

Re: Majors In College

My son is a freshman at a DIII majoring in physics. Because the school is small, there are a limited number of physics majors, making it possible for the school to make arrangements around his schedule (Don't expect that at a D1!). My daughter is a junior at a D1 school. She does not play a sport, but until this year she was a pre-pharmacy major, which might give you an idea of what the schedule for a science major at a D1 would be like: Her chemistry I class has 3 hrs/week of class time,...

Bogeyorpar's D3 Academic-Baseball College Ranking

Bogeyorpar ·
I had too much turkey and nothing else to do during the Thanksgiving weekend, so I decided to create a college ranking system that reflect both academic and baseball strength. The formula is very simple: 1. Take academic ranking from WSJ/Times 2017 College Ranking. The reason: this list ranks universities and LACs and Regionals together, so we don't have the problem of Williams/Amherst ranking the same as Princeton/Harvard. 2. Take D3 ranking from Massey Rating system. It ranks 380 D3...

Identfying a "right" college

There are many threads here which focus on one aspect of recruiting or another and I thought I'd give a shot at creating a basic framework to capture the process and perhaps help families arrive at their ultimate college destination. All a player can do is control a part of the process and NO MATTER his wishes and dreams, a player cannot shoehorn himself into a program which for - whatever reason - doesn't want the player. So, what goes into the calculus of finding a right college? (notice,...

When talking "high academics" are you talking from the player's side or from the college side? From the player's perspective, the grades and stats are personal to the player, very quantifiable, and will be in his past when he matriculates to college. From the college side, the information pertains to the future performance in the classroom of the athlete. I think one needs to distinguish between the athlete and a regular student.
