I just received an email from Justbaseball. His son, Erik Davis was struck in the head tonight while pitching in the Cape Cod League.
Erik has been airlifted to Mass General where he will need surgery for facial fractures. His vision will be very closely monitored. Justbb is a treasure of a person and is separated by 3,000 miles from Erik. Please do everything in your ability to generate every positive thought and prayer for Erik and for his great family.

'You don't have to be a great player to play in the major leagues, you've got to be a good one every day.'

Thank you so much to everyone for your prayers and thoughts. They are very, very much appreciated.

My wife took the redeye to Boston last night and is with him now. Things are looking up at this time...he is alert and on the phone with friends and coaches and family...trying to help us all feel better. He will likely have some surgery in a short while to take a look around...probably followed by more surgery later in the week. While he lost vision in his right eye initially, it seems to be mostly back now. He was moved from Mass. General early this morning to the Mass. Eye & Ear Hospital (next door?).

Among the many things we are truly grateful for is his Stanford teammate/catcher Brian Juhl...Brian, a truly class human being, was in the on-deck circle for the other team and was the first to the mound and later called us to give an update.

For those who do not know Erik...he is a competitor to the nth degree. He cannot wait to get back on the mound whenever that is possible and is already planning that return in his own mind.

This scenario was always in the back of my mind...just never thought it would happen off a wood bat. I was listening to the game on the internet when it happened and I am sure you all know how horrifying it was for us.

Its times like this that puts everything in life into perspective. Give your sons a huge hug tonight...if they're away, call them and tell them how much you love them.

Thanks again to all.

Tom, thank you so much for the encouraging update. What a wonderful young man, concerned about talking with friends and family to try to help everyone else feel better. Our prayers of course will continue, and I'm sure everyone would appreciate it if you can continue to update us whenever you have anything at all to share.
