Over heard this comment by a "bleacher coach" at a high school:

With a runner at third and the infield playing in, the runner should break to the plate on any grounder not to the pitcher. At the high school level, this runner will score 80% of the time.

This was new to me. Anyone else heard this?

Granted there may be instance with the incorrect player at third but with an average/good runner on I agree with the above. It's all about the break from third. There can be NO indecisiveness. If you have to think about it you're most likely out at either the plate or going back to third. It's got to be bang-bang.

The original post says '80%'...so we all agree that it doesn't always work out, but 4 out of 5 is a good risk/reward ratio... Smile

Sure, but I was just meaning that if you go with this strategy, it can make you look real bad at some point. Just be prepared to handle situations like that, which is all I meant. But I agree, putting pressure on the fielders to field it cleanly, make a good throw, and the catcher apply the tag at the plate can create some real issues for the defense.
