Baseball America just finished its review of the top professional prospects. Assume it was done before Zach was promoted. He is listed as having the best "control" at the AAA level. Smile But he is not listed as the best pitching prospect. Eek Eek Eek Eek I wonder if the Atlanta Braves, Bobby Cox and Leo Mazzoni got to vote.

If you take a look at BA's top 100 propsect list
they put out in March you can identify quite a few players who are up that are still considered prospects:

Joe Mauer
Scott Kazmir
Zach
Aaron Hill
Brandon League
Jon Papelbon (recently sent back down)
Igucgi (Who beat us with a HR today!)
Houston Street

Maybe PG or bbscout can tell us how long they need to be on a roster before that are no longer considered propscts?
Guess who was voted the NL Rookie of the month for July?...assume Baseball America was not involved in the voting. Smile
The BA poll was for AAA players and was probably taken before Zach was promoted, so he would have been a "prospect". To list two pitchers in AAA considered to be better prospects, with the numbers Zach had been posting, is difficult to understand...but does sell newspapers. If I had to guess, the two listed by BA as the best pitching prospects in AAA throw 94 which Zach doesn't. Just uses that "control" to get outs. Wink

BA's concept of prospect is usually different than that of the average fan. For pitchers, size and velocity are the key factors and if they have to talk about a pitcher that knows how to win without the 6'7" stature or the 95 mph fastball, they have to use qualifying expressions like "You can't argue with results ..."

It is really interesting to see who they consider prospects and who they don't consider prospects. If a pitcher (only position I can relate to Wink ) doesn't fit their stereotype but does well, they will occasionally report on his outings if he is doing well and drop him off their "watch list" if he is struggling. A pitcher that fits their concept of a true prospect, whether doing well or not, gets their attention all the time whethe he is performing well or not. JMO(bservations) Smile

Another rookie phenom is Jeff Francoeur with the Braves. The only reason I am posting this in Zach's thread is because of something interesting that Jeff said while being interviewed after playing Pittsburg.

Zach plunked Jeff during his AB and when asked about it, Jeff responded that there was some "history" between the two in Minors and that he was half expecting to get hit.

Maybe Opp or Opp,jr. can fill us in?? Smile
