Had a friend tell me his son received a Christmas card from an area scout. Is this a common practice?

Depends on what you mean by "common practice?" It certainly doesn't happen to the vast majority of HS players, but it isn't tremendously important in the grand scheme of things.
If a senior HS player is on a serious list, about now/by now scouts will be setting up in-home visits. Thats a good example of when you know the interest is very serious.
While in HS my son did get some cards I do remember.
He also got a gold plated ornament from the cardinals who drafted him 3 years later.
He never got a card from them after that until he made the 40 man roster.
I am not sure why you are asking this question. The long and the short of it, is that the area scout doesn't draft him. He justs gives a recommendation.
I guess because of how excited they were I was curious. I kind of felt it might be par for the course but I would not rain on their parade.
In my experience its not par for the course, but its not something to get overly fired up about either. Player is on a list…list might be 100 players long…or 500 players long.
