Southeast Missouri took 2 from Northern Iowa today at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau. Game 1 was a slugfest for the Redhawks as they put up 20 runs with 5 home runs. Final score 20-8 in game 1. Game 2 just finished a couple of minutes ago with the Redhawks edging the Panthers 7-6 in 7 innings.

Did anybody else see what New Mexico did to Binghamton earlier today? 30-2!!
College baseball is so much fun!!!!

This was our 1st week-end of missing games @ son's college. First game Fri we listened to with a live commentator. For today's double header no such luck, watched it on the computer screen with very poor coverage (sidearm stats).

Son's team swept a team with many of son's friends from summer teams. Apparently that made the victory even sweeter. It's fun when he calls after the game to go over the game.

It's amazing how these kids do grow up being away from home. I have to say how much FUN college ball is for the parents. We are enjoying it so much( and he seems to be really enjoying it also).

Last week we traveled to an away series and were the only parents at the games. The boys were so happy to see us (could have had something to do with taking them out to dinner). We were in the same hotel as the team, after one win I congratulated the coach and got a big hug from him! I'm sure that doesn't happen too often.

At this point we are thrilled with son's choice of college. He loves it and we are having a great time watching the games. Now the real challenge will be to keep the grades up with so much baseball mixed in.
My son got his first inning today as a closer and we were there. (college sophmore)
His first scheduled start had been cancelled due to rain, so patience was needed and applied while enjoying the successes of the team. I asked how he felt about waiting out the weather and not getting in yet, his reply "We're winning, I'm cool with that."
He had a 1-2-3 9th to finish the game. He was amazing! (spoken by a true momma, I know), but he really was
As usual, Haverford's early season (northern) games were canceled this year. New however, is that the school is exclusively playing southern schools, on campus...making this year's spring trip one long awaaaaay game.

The Ford's opened the 2009 season, and the trip, yesterday afternoon at Emory, with a single day game that morphed into a doubleheader.
Emory rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the 16th, to win 3-2.

While not there, I listened to Haverford's webcast, and there sounded to be at least a dozen extreme defensive plays. (For example, the Fords cut down two Emory runners at the plate, while Emory's shortstop took away 3-4 base hits with phenomenal range and quickness.)

Haverford plays Lagrange College this afternoon at 15:00 EDT.

Well, drove by the HS field the other night, saw the lights. It brought tears to this mom's eyes. I just couldn't imagine how the game could go on after my son graduated. Couldn't comprehend how they could field a team without my son. Smile

Attended son's college games (2nd weekend of their season) and had the pleasure of meeting (fellow hswebber) Ghoti and his wife. We have PMed on here for over a year as sons signed with a top DII, then followed Coaches when they left for a DI. We have been through much on-line. It was nice to put a name with faces. Game was cold and rainy. But it was fun to see.

Son is low man on totem pole, especially after suffering an injury in the fall, but he is enjoying the team and having a good time and glad to still be playing the game he loves - already lots of funny stories to tell.

I actually have a harder time driving by the Little League field. Back then my son relied on me to practice with him. Hours of soft toss and backing him up against a fence so I could throw short hops at him buckets at a time. It was a very enjoyable time in my life.

By the time he got to HS he was well beyond anything I could do to really help him advance much. It was a lot of fun watching him play there, but the Little League field is where I get a lump in my throat.
my observations from college baseball......

yesterday father-in-law, son and i attended the wku/ulm game in bowling green. i've never followed college baseball closely, but came away from the game in awe......here are just a few things that struck me yesterday:

1. college baseball has some AWESOME ambassadors. several players took the time to speak with my son, exchange numbers, facebook info etc.... these young men also introduced themselves, shook hand with me and g'pa and then graciously signed autographs for little kids. they represented their program, their school and their parents beautifully.

2. college players love seeing their parents/friends/fans after the game. my favorite part of the game has always been the after-game hug (and that's saying something, because there are a LOT of things i love about baseball).....tiger woods once said he couldn't wait to step of the last hole and hug his pops. several players found their family and friends waiting after the game for hugs and dinner plans.....it was touching watching the parents beem with pride and watching the young men take simple pleasure from the college baseball experience.

3. college baseball rocks.....it obviously helped that the home team pulled out a big victory, but what a great day, watching a great game, played by a bunch of great young men!

i so envy all you parents of college players.....and although i don't want to wish away the fun of high school ball, it's nice to know that the next phase will bring the same kind of joy to our lives......

PLAY ON!!!
Great post L8 Breaking.

I enjoyed watching FSU v. High Point tonight on tv and seeing Sherman Johnson, freshman at FSU, get his first base hit as a Seminole. He went yard in the 8th inning on his first pitch offering for a Grand Slam!!

Sherman and 17 played together since Pony Mustang in Tampa, including high school. Sherman's father has been a great coach and mentor for a lot of kids in the area. We miss Sherman and wish him the best. Keep pushing like you have always done and continue to make your Ravens proud!

I'm a little behind, but I'm checking up on some favorite college teams and see that last night Coastal Carolina won their ELEVENTH game in a row!

Then I check the stats and see that ClevelandDad's son Tyler is leading the team in batting average at .455. Four-fifty-five in DI baseball? Eek Add in 10 walks and the kid has an OBP of .579 - on base almost 6 out of 10 times he steps up to the plate!!! Amazing!

Way to go Tyler and Coastal!

Thanks Julie. As I have tried to explain to people in the past, the less people notice, the better he does. Thus, please quit noticing Big Grin

Seriously, I have been chided offline about some easy opponnents on the schedule this year. While this may be true (it is for just about every college team) he has been taken out of many games this year in the first few innings when the score has gotten out of control. One game we won last weekend 36-3 he was removed after the first inning after walking twice in the inning. Our freshman and sophmores have gotten some good experience this year. The other night, he had the longest hitting streak in the nation snapped at 13 games. Even though he went 0-3, he still managed to get on base two other times and score a run so I was happy about that. I'll be honest though, I wanted the streak to last all season cry Big Grin
It's so great reading the updates about all of your sons/players thus far this season. Sounds like a lot of great times at the ballfields!

It has amazed me this season how much faster the game is played than at the high school level. Incredible.

After a long (and growing impatient by the day) three weeks of younggunson not toeing the rubber even once, he was called in yesterday in relief against JUCO #3 ranked Young Harris. We got literally killed unfortunately. Younggunson pitched 3 innings with only 1 run scored (unearned), 1K, no walks, 21 pitches with 17 being strikes. While I was proud of him for coming back after a long hiatus with a lot of confidence it saddened me to see our other boys struggle on the mound. I want to see our "team" do good, not just my son.
Don't know what's in the water in Virginia but just saw where U Va. just put it to FSU tonight and their starting pitcher had 13 k's against the Seminoles. They are now 15-0 with a team, that's TEAM batting average of .400! BTW the team ERA is 1.87. Coach O'Connor has done wonders there.

Would they be a Southern school or a Northern school? Big Grin

That darn Mason Dixie line sure is a gray area, huh? LOL

That is the essence of understanding the game, when you are about the team and not just your son. We all want our own sons to do well, but I am with you I want to see the team do well.
I couldn't say it any better than this from

Honorable Mention III:
- UC Irvine’s Brock Bardeen.
For the second time this season, Bardeen blasts a grand slam to decide a game. He also gets the win on the mound in the 7-5 win over Tulane at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine tonight. In the decisive 6th inning, Bardeen’s bomb put UCI up for good as part of a 6-run inning. He then went 1.2 innings on the mound to pick up his third win of the season as well.

Brock Bardeen Named Big West Pitcher of the Week

Senior earns first honor after recording two wins, two key hits

March 16, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior Brock Bardeen (Fallbrook/HS) was named the Big West Pitcher after picking up two wins relief and recording two key hits to lead UCI to a 3-1 week.

At USC, Bardeen drove in the tying run in the UCI ninth. He was then was handed the ball in the 10th inning and went on to pitch three shutout innings to earn the win. The right-hander, who had not pitched in a college game prior to this season, struck out three and scattered three hits in the outing.

Against Tulane in the series opener, Bardeen jumped on a first pitch offering for a grand slam in the UCI sixth to give the Anteaters a 6-3 lead. It was Bardeen's second grand slam of the season and he became the only Anteater to record two in a season. Bardeen then took the mound against the Green Wave in relief of Bibona and earned the win after holding Tulane to a run on two hits while striking out two in 1.2 innings.

Bardeen leads UCI with four home runs and posted a 2-0, 1.93 ERA in two appearances this week, striking out five in 4.2 innings while giving up one run on six hits.

The honor is the first for Bardeen and the second for the Anteaters this season.

"After the game it suddenly looked like the crowd would be endangered by a huge thunderstorm, but Young Moose shook his finger threateningly at the dark clouds, and within minutes the skies were blue and sunny."

Sounds like this young man can do just about anything. What a tremendous start to the season!
