My Sophomore son just attended his first college showcase camp at a solid DI school in SoCal. It was well attended with players from all over the US. It appeared my son made a good impression as he was one of only a few to be pulled aside to give full details about his summer team and future plans. Several coaches singled him out. I would like to have talked to coaches to get feedback on areas of improvement or advice in general but was told they have NCAA rules and do not talk to any parents after these showcases. The attitude was very tight lipped. Is this normal? Why bother if they can not talk until Jr. eligibility while a Sophomore?
How do we interpret his performance other than coaches saying they will see him this summer in AZ at future showcases?

Dadcoach,

My two cents.....Congrats on your son's good showing and interest for the next showcase.  I would do two things.   First, have son follow up with the interested coaches and any other coaches that were in attendance that your son is interested in.   Second, I would discuss the situation with his summer team coach.  Possibly, the summer coach can act as a proxy to find out exactly what level of interest the college coaches have in your son.  This is the fairly typical process for recruits prior to July 1 of junior year.

To answer your question directly, yes.  You can expect coaches to be tight lipped about this in public view.

dadcoach....congrats on your son getting interest as a sophomore.  Unfortunately you're in a tough spot.  There are really only 2 ways your son can get info.  1) call the coach....but remember, The coach cannot call back if you get his voicemail....your son will just have to keep trying.  2) visit the school...in which case, the coaches can talk to him all they want while he's on campus.

Once it hits July 1, 2014, he's permitted to send and receive unlimited emails with coaches...and also DM on twitter.  He can also receive one call per week from coaches...and more during the summer and fall contact periods.

Good advice, but I think it is Sept. 1st for his son, because he is only a sophomore.

Dadcoach,

Is this normal? Not only is it normal, it's required by the NCAA. Technically, those coaches are there as paid instructors, they cannot recruit (except for the host school).

Just wanted to sew together a couple of things offered by Fenway and Buckeye. It's fairly typical for the travel coach to arrange a time for your son to call a college coach, rather than just calling and hoping to catch him when he can answer the phone.

You also mentioned that you would have liked to talked to the coach. Son and parents are the same entity when it comes to recruiting rules.

Also, some dates and rules vary by Division. Here's a link to the current DI calendar.
