Just wondering how open college coaches are amongst each other about recruits. In one case, it was as though a certain coach had my son's Top 5 list right in front of him, even though we never tipped our hand and hadn't yet listed any schools with the Clearinghouse. Is it merely from standing shoulder to shoulder at showcases, or do these guys actively discuss prospects, as in, "Hey Bob, how'd you ever let Jimmy slip through your fingers and come visiting MY campus?" Or, "Got any extra middle infield prospects who can bat leftie?" I assumed they kept their cards close to their vest during recruiting, but some we've seen are too far apart geographically for this to have been shared inadvertently.

Oh, VA, they talk! It's a very small world with coaches. Coaches aren't dumb and aren't going to share information that would hurt their chances on a certain recruit that they really want. However, I know first hand that some coaches discussed my son and some called local college coaches to discuss him. I also know a school that sent another coach to watch him play because they couldn't get here. Just as in any other profession, they have friends and colleagues that they trust and value opinions from. Remember too that coaches move schools/parts of the country and often have contacts in many places.

some colleges may give out bad information on player hoping to get all the other colleges to back off.

Good example a pitcher was beign heavily scouted by colleges, college 1 really wants him tells a few colleges he had verballed to me. He had not. everyone backs off now. The player found out, naturally not a happy campier with college 1. Signs with another college, get drafted and signs.

No brainer they are competition why are they gonna give you accurate info on recruited players
Yes we talk amongst each other for sure. We are always trying to find out something we didn't know and jockey for position with a prospect.

LAFMOM said it very well.

VA,
Yes, college coaches do share information about recruits, but I think another logical answer may be a current coach or player.
Did this college coach talk with a high school or travel coach?
It is very common for college coaches to ask the high school or travel coach the recruits top 5 colleges. Two reasons: First, he wants to find out who his competition is.
Second, he wants to make sure your son is being recruited by programs of the same quality.
Bear (or others who know, I guess),
In our case, the coaches were from different conferences, but some still played against each other in out-of-conference games. But say we're talking about 2 coaches from the same conference. Does that mean they're MORE likely to compare notes, or LESS likely?
I think Sweetlou is probably right that hs and travel coaches will often give up info. We used this to our advantage in one case, to synch up offers, i.e. our coach "leaked" how far along we were in the pr****ss with some other schools and prompted another to get in the game. The college coach I referenced at the start of this thread however didn't get our info from hs or travel. I must admit, as unsettling as it was at first, it impressed me how well he "knew the market" he was dealing with.
At a college camp we attended, the host college had invited a number of other college coaches. This was a surprise (a pleasant one), since I did not recall seeing anything mentioned in the camp write-up. After the camp, we looked at the websites for a number of these "guest" colleges and found that a lot of them played each other, including the host college... non-conference.

Before things got started one morning, a number of the coaches were out playing "baseball golf" all over the stadium. It was fun to see all these different college uniforms roaming around like Bocci Ball players <grin>. Yeah, I think there is definitely a "coaching fellowship" of some sort. When you start looking at their backgrounds, a lot of them intertwine. When you think about it, there's not really that many around when compared to some other professions.

Of course, we also attended a camp that was strictly staffed by the host college, so I guess it runs both ways.
