I'm considering trying out for first base next year, although I don't think I will end up doing so. I've been playing first base this summer. I'm great at first defensively, but I'm short (5-8). I'm also not a power hitter like most first basemen. I have gap power, but not homerun power. I hit for a decent average and get on base. I guess I just wanted to know how important defense is at first base. I know I probably won't try out for first, but it's just a thought.

I'm 16 and going into my junior season. The only reason I would consider playing first is because the starting first basemen also pitches, which would give me a chance to possibly see playing time on varsity. I don't have the greatest reflexes in the world so first base seems like a good fit. I used to play 3rd, but you have to play so much closer and the ball gets there a lot faster. At first you just have to knock it down, which I almost always do. I'm also really good at recieving throws. If only I could grow a couple more inches.
If you like first base and you believe your skills fit the position, then work hard at it and play there as much as you can in the summer and fall. Don't worry too much about your height, as you have no control over it. When I played college (D-1) ball our first baseman was only 5'7" but was an outstanding fielder and strong hitter --- so it's not that crazy an idea to be "short" for the position.
