Really, then you would be void of any constructive insights accept that the U of M baseball program may rebound one day some time in the future for one nonsense reason or another. We provide context to the uniformed -- You.
I have been reading this thread trying to gain some insight into Maryland Baseball. It seems clear there are some strong opinions about the program, and I'm trying to sort out the difference between what was; what is; and where the program is pointed going forward.

I'll be the first to admit my ignorance on the subject, and I do not mean to be glib, but can some of you who are more informed answer the following:

How long has Maryland baseball been down? I get the impression it has been under-performing for some time.

If my assumption is correct, what in your opinion has kept Maryland down so long? Poor Coaching? Poor recruiting? Lack of commitment to the program by the school? All of the above (percentage of blame)?

I have been in the trailer that gets mentioned. What tpye of commitment does the school have to building and maintaining competitive baseball facilities? Are there upgrades in the works?

I know UMD focuses heavily on Football & Basketball. Is Baseball in some way out of favor with the athletic department?

I understand from those who have known and met him that Coach Bakich has a track record of being an excellent recruiter and Coach. He certainly comes from a strong pedigree. In his first year, he is working with a team he mostly inherited; but there seem to be lots of criticisms of him, and doubts about his being the man who can turn things around. In what are these doubts rooted? Or, if you think he is the guy to turn things around, what is it that you have seen that gives reason to believe this will be the case?

I have had the pleasure of getting to meet and speak with Bernie Walters via USA Baseball connections. He strikes me as a superb man, who will only be connected with a quality program and effort. It would seem that having him on board can only benefit the program as well. Am I missing something here?

I get the impression that some of you may have played at Maryland in the day; have had a son play there; or possibly have a son there today. I know that can evoke strong emotions in either direction. I would really welcome any insights you can offer to the questions above with an eye towards where the program is heading, moving forward from the close of this season ... and the reasoning behind your thinking.

Many thanks.
For the record, I did read the previous pages, and have been following the thread as it has developed.

I have gleaned some good thoughts and opinions from the earlier stages, but I have also taken away form the discussion a range of unsupported opinions; some emotionally charged shots; personal jousting; some single game analysis; and a discussion of Danny Hultzen, a MD boy who Pitches at UVA.

I am sincerely interested in hearing some thoughtful, reasoned, supported opinions on the questions posted about the future of UMD Baseball from where they stand today. IF there are folks who have some real insights into the actual plans for the program going forward, that would be tremendous. I have not read a lot of that so far. If I missed it amongst the other stuff, then accept my apologies.

That said, I for one would still welcome some well educated, thoughtful, and supported input on where the program is headed after this season concludes ... and I expect I am not alone.

Its all going to come down to the type of arms UofMD can attract. The key is to recruit pitchers who can contribute on the weekends even as freshman. These type of players are usually the kind of kids the pro guys look to draft and sign. Pitchers who project to rounds 8-15 usually have top notch ability, and are difficult to sign because the signing bonus won't be enough to forego a partial scholarship (50-75% players) toward a college education. To get three or four of those guys in your program, you are going to have to be able to attract quality talent in your 1/2 of the continental United States. To me, that will present the biggest challenge. I'm born and raised in MD, but getting someone to come to school here will prove to be a difficult challenge.
The best that Terp Baseball can hope for with the
remainder (11 games) of the college season, is to win a ball game at Miami, win a ball game at home vs Clemson, and win the Toilet Bowl Series at Wake Forest.

That provides a banner Terp year with 8 (or nine) conference wins (and course 21-22 conference losses).

And let us not forecast just yet, since the team is (mathematically not out of it yet) staying home for ACC Tournament (and from what used to called the 'Maryland Invitational'.)

However, should the last games of the collegiate season remain dismal (seven game losing streak & 1-10 last games), as it is headed, the players will look forward to the summer Collegiate Leagues,
(and with an outside chance of one (or two) draft picks in June 2010).

Except for maybe the 1966-1972 years, the freshman
Conference Starter on the hill has been special, yet rare since ~1995.

Of the eight pro arms from 2003-2007 at Terpville, no one was a conference starter as a freshman. Milton, (who is retiring from MLB baseball June 1, 2010, after a pretty good ($52M, 12 yr MLB career) may have been the last of the special arms as a Terp freshman.

Remember, the current AD's process has been to use a 'National' search to locate a Head Baseball Coach.
That process has been used twice in 10 years. The process failed the first time, and it's too early to state process failure the second time.

However, the Terps 2010 team season stats don't lie.
Poor Team Hitting: .254 team BA
Poor Team Power: .355 team Slg
Poor On Base %: .340
Poor Team Pitching: 7.02 team ernie
Ave Team Fielding: .961 team defense
To date: 15-30 W/L , four conference wins.

It's been a very long season for this 'new' program!

Go Terps

And for those who really follow ACC & Terp Baseball, RHP B Harman had another (except for the walks) quality start. I chatted with his Mom yesterday, who appreciated the pitching scoresheets sent to her.

Should Brett have the last of two more Friday Conference quality starts, one vs Clemson next week, and then at Wake Forest, a top 10 (or higher) Terp season innings pitched record is on the horizon.

Why does Scott Silverstein's dad care so much about Maryland baseball? Go post on the UVA board please.

Bakich has this thing rolling in the right direction. He has serious talent coming in next year and in 2011. He's built a respect for the Maryland program already in the area. His team plays exciting, risky baseball that kids can buy into. Hell he kicked off the best player on the team cause he wasn't buying into the program. Bringing up kids from club baseball just shows you that he wants kids that are going to give 100% effort at all times and will sell themselves for the team. He's instilling a workman like attitude that rubs off on the kids. Exciting stuff to watch.
Oh the answer to the question 'why has MD baseball been ignored' is largely due to the success of lacrosse in the spring and when you are already supporting a major non revenue sport you tend to ignore the other.

Also, MD added SS Chris Culver who's a top 100 player in the nation from New York. Might end up signing in the draft.

Up to date list of 2010 kids:

1. C Patrick Leyland – 6′2” 200 lbs. - Bishop Canevin High School, Pittsburgh, PA - Rated #164 in the nation, #4 recruit in PA
2. INF/OF Kyle Convissar- 6′1”, 180 lbs. - Severna Park High School, Severna Park, Md. - Rated #219 in the nation, #2 recruit in MD
3. C Alex Ramsey – 6′0”, 185 lbs. - Severna Park High School, Severna Park, Md. - Rated #157 in the nation, #1 recruit in MD
4. OF/RHP Austin Kilbourne – 6′3”, 200 lbs. - Matoaca High School, Chesterfield,Virginia - Rated #227 in the nation, #6 recruit in VA
5. 1B Tim Kiene – 6′4”, 240 lbs - Avon Old Farms High School, Avon, Ct. - Rated #299 in the nation, #2 recruit in CT
6. OF/1B Mike Montville – 6′3”, 190 lbs. - Portsmouth High School, Portsmouth, N.H. - Rated #304 in the nation, #1 recruit in NH

It not my place to make announcements but I can tell you they signed another highly rated (under #200 in PG rating system)player out of south. He was with us at dinner.

I wonder what % of MD recruits are NOT rated by PG?

Cannon, Hultzen Named to Updated CBF Watch Lists

Tyler Cannon

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia Baseball's Tyler Cannon (Sr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.) each have been listed on updated watch lists for awards presented by the College Baseball Foundation. Cannon is a quarterfinalist for the Wallace Award, which is presented to the nation's top shortstop, while Hultzen is a quarterfinalist for the Pitcher of the Year Award.

Each award watch list has been whittled down to 25 quarterfinalists. The awards will be presented as part of the College Baseball Awards Show on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas.

Cannon is batting .358 this season and has committed just six errors at shortstop (.961 fielding percentage). He has hit 16 doubles, three triples and a career-high three home runs and is nearing a career high with his 34 runs batted in.

Hultzen is 7-1 this season with an ACC-low 2.00 earned run average. In 76.2 innings, he has allowed just 19 runs (17 earned), 49 hits and 11 walks while striking out 94. Opposing batters are hitting just .179 against him.
Too keep this in perspective (and with much reservation and with all due respect to the incoming and future recruits), the 2010 Terps Baseball will go into the record books as the worst Season 17-39 W/L (.303) and ACC Conference 5-25 W/L (.166) in fifty+ years!

With silver linings, "the new program' has no place to go, but up!

14 Wins in Conference Play should have
been the magic # into the ACC Tournament.

oops
UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, Maryland are staying home.

NC State & BC fought their way into the Tournament.

I know you only stated it was the spring class but
I Like to list the COMPLETE list of who has been signed for the 2011 season, so I am including the FALL recruiting class as well. Looks like a lot of competition unless some of these players sign professionally. Bringing in 4 catchers and a few good SS. Although I think Convissar will be a RF when its all said and done.

Fall 2010 class

David Carroll | RHP | Western Nevada College | Las, Vegas, Nev.
Carroll will have two years of eligibility remaining and will be eligible to pitch for the Terps immediately in 2011. The 6-foot-8 righty went 7-4 with a 3.64 ERA in his freshman season at Western Nevada and was second on the team in innings pitched (76.2) and strikeouts (64). Carroll helped the Wildcats finish 48-14 on the way to a Junior College World Series Appearance.

Kyle Convissar | INF | Severna Park HS | Severna Park, Md.
The No. 1 player in Maryland, Convissar helped lead Severna Park to the Maryland 4-A state title. The shortstop recorded a .481 batting average as a junior, but even more impressive was his .635 on-base percentage. Convissar also had eight home runs, 10 doubles, 31 RBI and 34 runs scored. He committed just three errors in 2009.

Tomo Delp | INF | College of Southern Nevada | Las Vegas, Nev.
A product of Bonanza High School in Las Vegas, Delp will also have two years of eligibility remaining after completing two years at the College of Southern Nevada. Delp's experience, versatility in the infield and hitting ability make him a valuable signee for the Terps.

Tim Kiene | 1B | Avon Old Farms HS | South Windsor, Conn.
The No. 2 prospect in Connecticut, Tim Kiene is a 6-4, 240-pounder who hits for power and will play first base for the Terps. Kiene attended Perfect Game's 2009 National Showcase and received a 9.5 out of 10 rating, which defines him as a top Division I prospect. As a junior, he led Avon in hits, batting average, home runs, and RBI.

Austin Kilbourne | OF/RHP | Matoaca HS | Chesterfield, Va.
Kilbourne brings a good deal of versatility, as he will be looked upon to play outfield and pitch. He was ranked as the No. 2 position player and the No. 3 pitcher in Virginia by pgcrosschecker.com. Kilbourne also attended Perfect Game's 2009 National Showcase and received a 9.5 rating.

Patrick Leyland | Catcher | Bishop Canevin HS | Pittsburgh, Pa.
The son of Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland, Patrick Leyland is the second-ranked position player in Pennsylvania and the No. 125-ranked prospect in the nation. Leyland has spent his summers playing for a variety of travel teams, including the Sportszone Red Sox of the Western Pennsylvania Elite Baseball League. He was a first team selection on the Perfect Game USA Preseason Underclassmen All-American Baseball Team in March.

Michael Montville | OF/1B | Portsmouth HS | Portsmouth, N.H.
Montville was named the 2009 Gatorade Player of the Year in New Hampshire after hitting .560 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI in Portsmouth's 16-game regular season. The No. 1 ranked player in New Hampshire, Montville possesses tremendous plate discipline, striking out just once in 63 plate appearances in 2009.

Alex Ramsay | Catcher | Severna Park HS | Millersville, Md.
Ramsay was selected to play in the Under Armour All-America game at Wrigley Field in August and is the No. 2 prospect in Maryland. A high school teammate of Kyle Convissar, Ramsay had a three-run homer to help Severna Park win the class 4-A Maryland state championship. He hit .362 with seven home runs and 22 RBI as junior in 2009.

Charlie White | OF | Naperville North HS | Naperville, Ill.
White has terrific speed, which made him one of the most highly recruited prospects out of Illinois. He went 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA as a junior, but his speed will make him into an outfielder for Maryland. White also batted .479 with five home runs, 39 RBI, 36 runs scored and 14 stolen bases as a junior.

Sir,

Will you be attending?
Is your son participating?

If so, what hat will you be wearing?

In the morning:
South: Austin Richards | Catcher | Georgetown Prep |
East: Kyle Convissar | INF | Severna Park HS
...South will bring some arms.
Hoping for a match up with Convissar

In the afternoon:
....West will bring an arm and a catcher.
....North will bring arms from Hammond, Wright & Gilman which will make it interesting.

Huge discovery for 2011 position players.
4A HS Champions, Sherwood, may stay home.

Two nine inning games. Supposed to be HHH.
To be safe, bring water and sun-block.

I can actually answer that question. And the answer would be about the same for any top college someone would care to name.

Chris Culver | INF | West Irondequoit HS | Rochester, N.Y. (Ranked by PG)

Jeff Crosswhite | RHP | Northwest-Shoals Community College (Alabama) | Dayton, Md. (Ranked by PG while in HS)

Ryan Holland | INF | Chattahoochee Valley CC (Alabama) | John's Creek, Ga. (Unranked in HS but did attend several PG events)

John McAllister | OF | Chestnut Hill Academy | Philadelphia (Unranked by PG, but did attend several PG events)

Blaine O'Brien | RHP | Middle Georgia CC | Scituate, Mass (Ranked by PG while in HS)

Greg Olenski | Catcher/INF | Holy Ghost Prep | Philadelphia (Unranked by PG, but did attend several PG events)

Austin Richards | Catcher | Georgetown Prep | Kensington, Md (Unranked by PG but did attend one PG event)

Jacob Stinnett | RHP/INF | Rancho Buena Vista HS | San Diego, Calif. (Unranked by PG but did attend several PG events)

Tyler Vail | RHP | Notre Dame Green Pond HS | Easton, Pa (Ranked by PG)

JaDamion Williams | INF | Brooks-Debartolo Collegiate Prep | Odessa, Fla. (Ranked by PG)

Early Signing Period

David Carroll | RHP | Western Nevada College | Las, Vegas, Nev. (Ranked by PG while in HS)

Kyle Convissar | INF | Severna Park HS | Severna Park, Md. (Ranked by PG)

Tomo Delp | INF | College of Southern Nevada | Las Vegas, Nev. (Ranked by PG while in HS)

Tim Kiene | 1B | Avon Old Farms HS | South Windsor, Conn. (Ranked by PG)

Austin Kilbourne | OF/RHP | Matoaca HS | Chesterfield, Va. (Ranked by PG)

Patrick Leyland | Catcher | Bishop Canevin HS | Pittsburgh, Pa. (Ranked by PG)

Michael Montville | OF/1B | Portsmouth HS | Portsmouth, N.H. (Ranked by PG)

Alex Ramsay | Catcher | Severna Park HS | Millersville, Md. (Ranked by PG)

Charlie White | OF | Naperville North HS | Naperville, Ill. (Unranked by PG but has played in several PG events)

Some of those above listed as unranked are actually listed in the rankings on the follow list.

So to answer the % question, of the 19 recruits… 13 are either ranked by PG or were ranked before they went Juco. The other six are not ranked currently but all of them have played in several PG events. So the percentage of those ranked by PG would be close to 70%. Last year nearly 80% of the entire MLB draft were players who had played in PG events.

BTW, this is very similar to pretty much all the best college programs anywhere in the country.

Name a top program and the results will be about the same, maybe even a higher percentage at the very top programs. It’s really not much of a secret! About 80% of the rostered players at last years College World Series had played in PG events. A couple of those rosters were 100% who had attended PG events. Those who really follow this kind of stuff already know it!

YANKEES SHORTSTOP OF THE FUTURE?
The Yankees selected Cito Culver with their first-round pick in Monday night's MLB draft, taking the 17-year-old shortstop from Irondequoit High School in Rochester with the 32nd overall selection.

Culver, a switch-hitter who also pitched 94 mph on the radar gun, has committed to the University of Maryland, but he was not expected to be taken in the first round, so it's likely he'll skip college and sign with the Bombers.

See what it takes to get a recruit to turn down a UMD baseball Scholarship! LOL And people say the program isn't turninh around!!! Big Grin
This decade, Terps have had 22 players
drafted and signed MiLB pro contracts.

Since 2000, Terps have had 5 players play in the big leagues

Currently, seven Terps are in pro baseball
with one retiring last week, two others in the big leagues.

Statistically,
five Terps drafted in 2002
four Terps drafted & signed in 2003
three Terps drafted & signed in 2007

Statistically, one Terp was drafted in 2010,
and is expected to sign a MiLB contract.

The old plan to improve Terp Baseball was to
recruit players that are:
- academically eligible,
- be dedicated to study and attend classes,
- be able to compete in the ACC, and
- if drafted out of HS, forego signing a pro contract
- be on campus in September.

Hi Bear!

Thanks for the explanation! The Terps have always had a number of players sign each year no matter how the team finished in the standings. That is a fact that many talented players have furthered their careers in the professional ranks after playing baseball at Maryland.

You also clarified why they never had "a lot" of signees drafted. They were looking for college athletes with the qualifications you had listed. After they got their education they also had a shot at the professional ranks!

It appears that the new plan is to try to "over-recruit" as much talent as possible with the knowledge that many had the potential to never wear a Terp uniform due to draft prospects.
