Steve, and that why we love you.
The two prior posts said the same about Nick.

Please try and keep up while watching the
paint dry. Or better yet, try to get out more.
And since you are an accountant, once more would be a 100% gain! Smile

I am surprised not to see Austin Neary on this list. I have seen over half the hitters play and Neary is more dangerous than the hitters I have seen.
Thanks for the kind words about Austin. He's a good player but he is a good kid more importantly. I really don't know how PG ranks players but Austin just played in his first PG event at the world wood bat 17u with the cavaliers. It was a very well run tournament i will say that. The team did well down in Georgia. There were many standout performances in route to a 4-0-1 record. There is an article on the MIAA website and in the Annapolis capital. Today about the accomplishments. As far as ACC and SEC, I think there are a whole bunch of kids that have that ability to play in those leagues but sitting the bench may not appeal to them. Many of the kids, given the choice, would prefer to make an immediate impact at a smaller school I would think.
We just returned from orientation and had the chance to meet with the coaches (sans Coach Burton who is on his 3rd week recruiting in Georgia).

We didn't hear anything about 15M to program. They are making changes to the field in terms of seating and adding a Fenway type wall from left center to right center. Also heard about a few rows of chairbacks but that seemed to be in the works after they add special student seating (construction to be started soon)- I think this is what I heard.

There were 5 recruits at orientation and I met four of them, not one (including our son)said anything about a major injection of money.

I did meet Austin, you have a very nice son and very good sized player. I introduced myself and told him I had emailed you thru this web-site.

It was fun to see Austin, Tim and Mike hitting at Shipley after the kids camp ended. Only problem was I had to shag balls. They did hit some bombs into the football practice field while the team was ruuning sprints - I am sure they made some friends on the football team.

Could be an interesting year, if the kids perform they may have a chance to win some playing time. Only 13 players returning and 23 new recruits, 11 of them pitchers!!

I guess a few players from last year talked to them about the "navy seal" training program they will go thru in the fall - mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats and then another mile run and that's on Wednesday's. We got back yesterday, my kid got up, went to the gym to lift and started his running program - probably a good idea considering what they are facing next month.

Guess they also have to carry a teammate to top of football stadium stairs - pitty the kid you draws Kiene!

Nhmonty,

That is pretty cool.I know Austin is really looking forward to get started. He is really excited about the program and all the great players they are bringing in,like your son.Their will definitely be opportunities for the kids.I think it will be a lot of fun watching them over the next few years.

I will be looking forward to meeting you and your son.My wife and I will definitely be at the Fall World Series in October
Really biased on freshman Maryland rf Charlie White.

Had the oppurtunity to coach him for a couple Summers here in Chicago.

The Terps got a true baseball player. The best thing about him is he is a good a teammate as you will find, and works his tail end off. Guys like Charlie make teams better just by being around.

The Texas ,Maryland game was special for him not only because it was his first D1 collegiate start, but u of Texas starting RF is one of his best friends from here also. Freshman Mark Payton, I believe Mark is hitting in the three hole for the horns... Yikes...

How fitting, Charlie robs Marks of his first college extra base hit in his 1st AB.
Nice story. At the other end of the spectrum there are alot of rumors of a few freshman who are looking in to transferring to JUCOs next year, doesn't seem to be enough spots for 22 newcomers on the field. 1 is already gone(mcallister i think) haven't seen him on the bench and at least 3 freshman are looking elsewhere from what i've heard on campus.
Our son is a teammate of Charlie White at Maryland. He is also a freshman and an outfielder competing for playing time with Charlie. They have developed quite a friendship.

He has told me on more than one occasion that Charlie is an amazing player. He thinks Charlie will be playing a lot more this year and will be a key contributor over the next few years.

After watching Charlie this fall and in the Texas series I concur, great speed, rocket arm, puts the ball in play and can run the bases. Maryland got a good one in Mr. White. I have met Charlie on several occasions and he is a great kid, met his parents in Texas and its easy to see why he is such a good person.

Re McAllister, talking with parents in Texas the reason he is not on the team may not be baseball related.

As far as playing time is concerned all I can tell you is when Coach Bakich talked to our son he made no promises of playing time. He was upfront that he was bringing in JUCO kids for their experience while the freshman developed. Our son has been lucky, he has played far more than we expected in the first two weeks but like Bakich has said he is experimenting these first few weeks.

Right now its my opinion the only two freshman that will see significant playing time will be Jake Stinnett (great potential) and Charlie White. Maybe Tim Kiene once he overcomes his tough start.

Starters that I can see: Infield: two JUCO's second and first with veteran Laser backup at first, veteran at short, freshman at third. Catcher is veteran with JUCO healing from injury. Pitchers 99% veteran and JUCO.

Outfield JUCO in CF, 4 veterans and 2 freshman trying win other spots - unsettled OF, probably boils down to who is hitting the best. As noted in previous post look for Charlie White to take one of these spots - his speed and defensive is a difference maker.

Not a lot of opportunity for Freshman this year, they should have know this going in.

Terps are heading into Conference play in a couple of weeks. I booked a 9-4 W/L record heading to Ga Tech.

Here is Bear's look a the 'significant' playing time.

(And I have minimal stake in such matters, other than having grandchilden and wife as alumni (and who attended Navy and Army games at Terpville), and
a son who worked the Terp winter camp.

Inf
Delp
Holland
Lazaar
Rodriquez
Stinnet

OF
Montvalle
Padula
Schneider
Wacker
White

C
Cleary
JUCO (15 day DL)

Conference Starters
Beck
Carrol

Closers
Ghysels

Relief Pitchers - Staff

Things may change, especially if
the Terp freshman are provided additional
opportunities to hit. (Pls excuse spelling)

And while I am at it some early looks at
prospects for June draft

Interesting and will likely get more interesting next season when the terps bring in even more nationally ranked freshmen at infield and outfield positions. Not sure where all these guys are going to fit in.

Stinnet is a stud!! I think Convissar is going to get some reasonable time too.

Mike Montville is also a stud on OF! Dont see Padula playing OF with all those fast / great defensive OFs on the list. Need his bat in the lineup so he is looking more like a DH only at this point. What about Matt Marquis?
There will be changes next year, there has to be. So far there are 10 commits for next year. That means he(Backich) has to find room. There are 35 kids on the roster and I think 4 or 5 seniors.1 or 2 juniors MIGHT go pro. With the newcomers as of now that will put the roster at 38. With the limit being 35 and the travel at 27, yes I think some of this years class are as good as gone. Would this be over recruiting or is this the way the big time schools recruit. With 11.7 scholarships to give, I just don't see how it works. Maybe somebody can explain but if you are a freshman this year then now is the time to leave in my opinion because you have the JUCO option.Of course thats not an option for the upperclassmen
Monty

Big believer in winners hang with winners. Your son must be a great kid as well. Best of luck to him. Spot on with Charlies parents and sure you will meet Grandpa. He is awesome too.

Bubba

I hear ya..
Not real familiar with their situation at UM but do know that kids leave programs for several different reasons. Sounds like there is some competition there now. Not sure if thats a bad thing for any program. In my experiences not always but many times a guy moves on its because they dont like the writing that on the wall.

Some possiblities on next year's roster. Three seniors gone, 5 potental draft picks use Bears list above but take out Potter (probably drafted but counted as senior)add Delp. One player is already gone and there are two walk on pitchers on roster (?). That's eleven potential changes. Big questions - do listed players get drafted and if so do they sign.

Other factors are injury, grades and transfers. I am sure some freshman thought they would play more and may consider other options. Big issue is 5 catchers with all returning next year, injured JUCO catcher behind 8 ball to get drafted so probably stays but he is older than most. If some upper classman don't play much this year they may not return, its alot of hard work and time to put in without the hope of playing? Who knows, have to wait for the season to shake out.

Of the ten coming in 2011, 7 are listed as pitchers and looks like they could lose 6 pitchers (4 jrs and 2 seniors). The rostered walk ons are pitchers.

From what I have read on this web site this is normal for a D1 school in high profile conference.

Is this over recruiting or attrition planning?

Of course this is all speculation.

Who's the 5th catcher?? There are only 4 listed on the site and PG doesn't have anyone listed coming in the 2011 class. I could see one of the 4 leaving but it's not completely unreasonable to keep 4 depending on the philosphy of the coach. I know that most programs carry at least 4 in the fall due to the frequency of scrimmages and high number of bullpens that need catching.

Heck VT even has two students labeled as bullpen catchers that are under the manager/student assistant page in their program (page 20). Maybe not all programs have that luxury so they keep 4 guys to help carry the load.
