It is very program dependant. Size of the school & program play roles in this.
For example, my son played varsity as a freshman. He was the first and only freshman to play varsity in the history of the school (about 15 years). The reason was, he was a LHP and they needed a LHP to make a run with an otherwise very senior group. He pitched and that was it.
This year, the baseball program has 22 at varsity (no freshman and one sophomore LHP), 17 at JV and 20+ at freshman. There were a lot of cuts.
My daughter is one of three freshman playing varsity softball at the same school. They have freshman play all the way up every year. Why you might ask? They had 38 girls try out for the program. They kept 13 at varsity, 15 at JV and 10 at freshman. They cut no one.
Our HS has just over 3,000 students...
It just depends...

o it hapins offin arown hear
ma boy play 2 yeers at grayd 9
to ole now in grayd 10
Seems the quickest way to varsity is LHP. Last 2 years at our school LHP brought up from soph

Bingo!
We're almost there...Saturday will mark the first scrimmage of the season if they're able to get all the water off the field in time...
Senior son was named one of the captains today...The boys are definitely ready to go and we're ready to watch and root...hopefully Mother Nature cooperates!
It should be an interesting season as lots of these kids have played together for many years...Hard to believe they've only got 20 or so games left together...
Oh - and Freshman son made the JV lacrosse team...he was very excited...JV baseball coach who was his summer coach a couple of years ago (in baseball) jokingly gave him a hard time about his change in sports...
Good luck to all! Swampboy - your son too, but I'd be fine if he has an off day (or two or three) against my son's team!

Snowing again in Ohio, it's been quite a winter! I'm sure the boys are tired of being cooped up and want to get outside and play some games. IB jr had a small accident that required surgery on his throwing hand and was told not to do ANY throwing or hitting for 10 weeks.
His 10 weeks will be up March 29th and he can start getting back into throwing and hitting shape! So the High School season may be kind of a wash for him but he's got Summer and Fall to look forward to.
We have a new Pitching Coach this year, the reports I'm hearing seem very favorable and it sounds like the young man (first yr as a coach) is working hard and doing his best to get the kids in game shape. He's got a good mom!
Can't wait to lean on the fence at 3rd and eat some cowtail candy...

TurnTwoNet,
Hey, don't get greedy. You got his off day last year!
Congrats on T's captaincy.
Hope your field drains better than ours. Tomorrow's scrimmage is in jeopardy.

What is cow tail candy?
I was afraid to ask for fear GotWood would come up with a picture I didn't want to see.
Cowtails are an acquired taste. We folks Up North don't waste anything. In Newfoundland, where they don't have cows, kids eat seal flippers.

I guess I had it spelled wrong.
Cow Tales
It's a chewy milk caramel candy with sweet cream candy filling shaped like a Slim Jim. Just something to chew on at the games.

I wanted to ask the same thing! What the heck is that, IB?
Crazy weather in FL this week. 2B is 0 for the week, but has yet to have a game without an RBI. My suspicion is that he's trying to jack the ball (with encouragement from his teammates - one keeps telling him to hit the scoreboard), which is fine with a big lead unless there is a gale blowing in! He'll figure it out.
Looking for win #12 tonight against a team we already mercy-ruled on their home field. It's going to get down to 33 degrees! Glad we'll be in the press box. I know the other parents will be hoping for 5 and done, but I always want 7! (Especially when 2Bdad and I are out of the wind. )

How hungry do you have to get to be willing to acquire those tastes?
I was trying to kid you (all) Southerners.
But, they really do eat seal flippers, up there.

I think it was Mantle that was asked if he ever went to the plate and "tried" to hit a home run, his reply? I try to hit a home run EVERY time up to bat!
And I thought Cow Tales were on Concession counters world wide!
Haven't had a chance to try flippers yet, guess they haven't made it this far inland...

Who sells dill pickles at their concession stands?
They're a big seller here on hot days!

Nobody sells them, but some players and families keep a jar in their coolers. Word got out that the Eagles drink pickle juice during 90 degree games.
Yuck! I did read somewhere that Nolan Ryan used to soak his blisters in pickle juice.
And now I remember that they used to sell frozen pickle juice at the skating rink where we used to live in Ga.

Haven't seen dill pickles here, how do you serve them?
Sliced in four- longways only!
They have them in a big jar in the fridge. Before gametime, they'll put one big pickle each in a plastic bag and keep them cold. When someone orders one, they get a big fat cold kosher dill out of the fridge. I'll have to check, but I think they sell them for $1!
I was a proud mom last night. S2 had a grand slam and no past balls in his game last night. S1 had a school at the game to see him pitch again (down from north for games) and left in bottom of six because we were down and didn't think he would pitch. We came back and tied in bottom of the 6th. He came in to pitch top 0f 7 and shut them down in 3 inning with no hits and we had a walk off for a win in the bottom of the 9th. Talk about exciting night of baseball.
Wow! That sounds like an incredible night!! Congratulations to both boys and their teams.
Laura sounds like a great night, congrats to the boys....
Thanks. I don't normally share these things but it was just a very happy night for all of us.
Finally!!!! HS Baseball is just around the corner in New England!
'Pitchers and catchers' on Monday.
Tryouts 1 week from Monday.
1st scrimmage 2 weeks from Monday.
Boys and their parents can't wait to get outside and hear the sounds of baseball finally....

I'll second the motion - Finally! High school team announced and first official practice was Saturday - and it was warm and sunny! Play ball.
Another good week for my son's team, they go 2-0 on the week. Son went 4-7 1 double, 2 rbi's. Team started 0-3 and now 4-4. Good luck to everyone this week.
Son's first game scheduled for tomorrow. Hope the rain holds off!
Good luck to all of your teams up north. Hope the weather cooperates.
Scrimmages were canceled this past weekend, so today is finally the day! About to pack up and head out to watch some BASEBALL!!!
Rain - don't even THINK about messing with it!

Is it over the top to be checking Saturday's forecast twice a day for our out-of-town double header to start the season?
It's not over the top, I'm am keeping an eye out for next Friday (the 25th) which is the first scrimmage of our season!
How pathetic our we...LOL

Yikes...I can't imagine not playing yet. We are more than 1/3 through the season. It's going too fast...
Played for the fourth and last time at Warren ballpark in Bisbee last weekend. Just a wonderful old place that Bisbee High School uses as their home park. It's an old (1909) minor league park.
The kids are playing well (9-2-1). Hawk19jr is having a great senior season but I'm starting to panic because I can see the end coming.
I know it not suppose to be about me, but I really have enjoyed the ride!
Good luck to everyone this season....

Son made varsity as a sophomore, kinda bummed he is only gonna pitch. But happy to be varsity. Coach gave him the jersey from a player last year that went D-1, so he was psyched about that.
First scrimmage is Friday then a big tournament starting this Saturday. But we got 4 inches of snow yesterday and they didnt tarp the field. Hope the warm temps this week get it dry.

I'm with you, Hawk. We are halfway through the regular season. Senior night is less than a month away!
34 is a sophomore, and is on JV and will be the starting catcher. Has been brought up for a varsity intrasquad game and a varsity scrimmage and has had a taste of varsity and has figured out he can compete at that level. JV coach wants him to take some reps at 3rd base so that the freshman catcher can get some time behind the plate.
One more scrimmage on Friday and first regular season game is Monday.
Good luck to all as the season starts.

Son made varsity as soph, but playing behind a senior and has only had 4 at bats this season (12 games). Well, team has been struggling at the plate and 2013 Son got the start. Went 3-4, with a 2B, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. He (and I) were thrilled. We are hoping he gets rewarded with another start this afternoon...fingers crossed! Hope everyone is enjoying their season!
I am happy your son made an impact at the plate when given the opportunity. Way to go!
Thanks a lot Laura!
