34 had his first game today. Started behind the plate against one of the top 3 or 4 teams we will play this year. Team won 14-3 in 5 innings to avenge a one run loss a year ago. 34 was 2 for 3 with a couple of runs scored and an RBI. No passed ball and no stolen bases attempted. Our pitcher was pretty effective, no earned runs and only one hit and one walk.

All three runs against were in the typical one bad inning, an error, a HBP, and a wild throw on a swinging bunt. Team settled down after a defensive mound conference and finished the next 4 innings without an error.

Weather permitting we play tomorrow, although rain and thunderstorms are likely.

Good luck to all.
First region game was last night. Bballson got the start in a tough game. He went a complete game and got the win in a nail biter. We won 4-2, but it was scary for a while. We gave up 2 runs in the 4th and got behind 2-0. It stayed that way until the top of the 7th. In our last at bat we scored 4 runs to take the lead. He also got a big hit. With the score tied 2-2 with 2 outs, runners on 1st and 2nd and two strikes on him, he got a base hit to right to score the go ahead run. Bballson hit the mound and finished the game for the win. Pretty exciting. I just hope every game isn't so nerve wracking.

I think it is way harder on me than on him. I'm outside the fences trying to find the best "mojo" spot to sit or stand. I look into the dugout late in the game with us behind, and he is in there laughing with his teammates about something. Believe me, they take the game seriously, but it's good to see that he can unwind in the dugout and get out and be serious between the lines. Ah, to be young again.
Wow - bballman, what I wouldn't do to have a game like that. What fun!

We had another blowout last night. Razz 14-0 no hitter in 5. Big junior lefty pitcher who will go D1 or I'll be shocked; crazy breaking stuff that had them leaning in or diving out and dropping in for strikes. They just had no chance.

Tonight should be fun, though. We're commemorating the 10th anniversary of our 2001 team that was state runner-up. We've got about 10 guys from the team in town, and one of them (2B's hitting coach) just hung up the cleats after 6 years in the Angels organization. He'll throw out the first pitch.

Baseball has finally come to the NorthEast!
1B had their first HS scrimmage today, his first at bat, first pitch, BAM...HR.(no fence at this field so he was a running! ) Great way to start the season. He ended up going 3-4 with 2 rbi's and 3 R scored. We won 11-4....hope our DH scrimmages tommorrow go just as well. Still a bit chilly maybe 45 today, but the sun is starting to feel warm!
wbethea13, good luck in you upcoming games! Momof 1B, so glad your son is starting out so well!

Sometimes, a blowout is worth every inning.

Tonight we played a pretty good team in an even smaller district. They had been beating up on teams in their district and came in just a tad too relaxed.

While our boys are taking care of the field after each home game, I play a couple of songs they request. This is one: Lupe Fiasco: The Show Goes On

One of the opposing team's parents came up to the press box and complained that it was "offensive". There's nothing offensive at all about it. I said, "It's for the boys. You can go home, now." Í'm sure he was offended that we squashed his team like a bug. Bwahahahahahaaaa!!!

Won 14-3 in 5. 2B pitched 4, one earned run. Home run, double, single, 3 RBIs. See ya next time. SNAP!

Seems like most players have gotten off to good starts.....good luck to all.

Second game for 34 yesteday, played in a nice balmy 45 degrees and a steady 10 mph wind. 18-0 win and it was not that close. 34 had two singles and a double. Played first base so the coach could see our freshman catcher in action, he did a good job behind the plate. 34 had a few routine plays at first, but it was fun to see him out there, condsidering he has been behind the plate so much the last few years of travel and high school ball.

Quick turn around,as we have a game at 10am today, temps at game time will be around 32...perfect baseball weather.
Game on Saturday was a rough one...5 unearned runs in the top of the first; that set the tone for a tough day all around, leading to an 11-4 loss.

34 was one for four. His sole hit was a swinging bunt that he beat out. No passed balls, but he did lose a foul pop in the sun that would have ended an inning.

Next game was equally as disappointing but for opposite reasons, a 46-0 win that lasted just 2 1/2 innings. The other team just could not make plays or throw the ball over the plate. Hard to watch.

Team is now 3-1. Next game is Thursday, should be a competitive game.
Still playing scrimmages till 4/8 here. Sat we came back from a 7-1 deficit to win 13-8, so the boys were happy with that, unfortunately we looked like the Bad News Bears today and lost 13-2. 1B went 1-2 today with a nice hit to drive in 1 of the 2 runs. Hopefully we don't have so many errors come thurs for our next venture.
Really wish it would warm up, playing in 40 degree weather with a windchill is brutal!
We won our 3rd region game last night 18-5. Coaches poll came out earlier in the day and we cracked top 10 in state at #8, oppononent cracked top 10 at #9 so it should have been a close game. Bball son wore contacts for the 1st time this season and went 4-4 with 2 three run HR's and two singles (one off the left field wall). So, the stick was working. Said he could see the ball much better with contacts. He also pitched. Gave up 5 in 4 innings on something like 6 singles and a double. However, all the runs came after we were up 12-0. Shut them down in the 1st and 2nd innings. Gave up 3 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th. I would imagine it's hard to keep focus when you are up by that much against a good hitting team averaging 8 runs a game. I told him that's something he needs to work on. Just because you have a big lead, you still need to keep hyper focused and pitch like it was a 1-0 game.

Oh well, it's baseball. There is always something to work on. We'll keep plugging along. I'll cut him some slack, he's 5-0 with a 2.5 ERA and 42 K's. And he raised his BA to .364 in the game. Hope we keep up this pace, it will make for a good season for the team (knock on wood), don't want to jinx it, but it has been pretty good so far.
Thanks score. I know, all the waiting for the season to begin for almost a year and it's about half over already. It's kind of sad really. Wish it could go on forever. If we make the playoffs, it will be the first time since 2005 I believe. The way our team has been hitting, our chances should be pretty good. It's been fun to watch so far. Really hope to see it continue.

Do we play you guys? We're in 5A as well. Region 6. PM me if you want to get more specific.
Interesting season so far for the team and my son...Two 10 run rule games and an extra inning game...based on their first three games, my son seems to be hitting and throwing the ball harder this season than last fall...Not sure I have seen him throw harder than he did on a play last Friday to get a slow roller in the grass to first in time for the out...On the other hand, on Tuesday he had errors on back to back batters to give him 2 on the season...he committed his second error last season near the end of the last game! Those happen though...I really have never had to worry about his defense and don't plan to start now...he also had a run saving, over the shoulder, diving catch into shallow left in the top of the 8th of the same game...we won the game 10-9 in the bottom of the 8th...

His team is 3-0 so far with all three being district games...Tried for a second time on a non-district game last night, but they quit after 2 due to the rain...they really shouldn't have started the game...

Tomorrow night, another big district game as my son's team visits Swampboy's son's team...assuming the field dries out in time...
I've been posting in our state section and forgot about this thread. It's great to see everyone mostly doing well. And extra good luck to those off to slow starts.

JR's team is tied for first after a week and a half. He's hitting over .500 and leading the team in rbi's. He said since his upper body strength is down from not being able to do any heavy lifting since surgery, he's getting challenged at the plate and seeing better pitches. Only one walk so far. Right now he's not a threat to go deep in our MLB sized park. He led the team last year.

He's playing DH for now. His throwing is up to 175 feet. He hasn't uncorked a hard throw yet. He expects to get back in the field in about a week. He hates DHing. But it beats not playing at all which was the forecast in November.

Finally started the season here in CT!!! Yeah!

Made it through raw and cold tryouts, my 2013 made the varsity squad which feels great, except now he is learning patience as this coach believes in 'pitcher only' status and son is just itching to hit and field! Thanks to advice here on HSBBW I have been able to help him keep that in perspective, but he is hoping to charm the coach into getting some at bats .... we shall see...

He had an inning today so that is a vote of confidence for the only soph pitcher. Got 2 K, 1 Walk and popped out the next batter, no runs scored. Feels good --- and coach plans to use him 2morrow for a few innings since he only threw 12 pitches today. Today was an easy 12-0 win but tomorrow should be a real game.

Play ball, boys! Let's just try to warm it up a bit. (45 degrees and raw wind made it feel like 35 at today's game....)
The team won again and maintained being in first. Today was a turning point game on the injuries. While JR has played very well, today was the first time I noticed the "home plate is my office" swagger. After the game he said today was the first time he felt in charge at the plate. He crushed four balls. The two that went over the outfielders heads weren't caught. He played left today. The idea was no long throws. The entire league knows he had shoulder surgery. He gunned down a runner at home. It was the first time he cut loose a throw since last June.

I heard a very classy comment from a parent today. His son had five hits in the first four games. He sat today. I expressed his son should be in the lineup at DH. The parent said if the team is going to defend the conference title last year's DH deserves a chance to win his position back. His son was moved off the field by my son returning to the field. Last year's DH resumed hitting in the DH slot.

Good to read about your son RJM!! Congrats on the win Sandman.

After back to back 5-4 losses, son's team has won 3 in a row. Son was 4-9 with 3 rbis in those games. And he accomplished something he has been trying to do for a while at catcher, runner on 2nd got a little lazy and son threw him out.

Good luck to everyone rest of the week!! Keep the updates coming!
Good Luck today 19!
We have our opener for the season today, imagine that southern folks....we are just starting. LOL

The team had their pasta dinner last night, as a start the season supper...they are all excited hoping to make it to states this year. We have 9 Seniors and 4 Juniors for the team, this is our third varsity season.(New High School)
Ohhh come on 3:45...
Momof1B, I feel ya! Good luck tonight!

We are winding down our season, believe it or not. We have only one regular season home game left, one week from tonight, and it will be senior night. It may be my announcer swan song!

Right now the team is 18-0 with a big district matchup away tonight. 2B is pitching and went 3-4 with 11 Ks on the mound against this team last time out, but I'm a little worried because he has prom on the brain. That's tomorrow night. We'll see what happens.
