High School Season So Far

We havent even had our first game yet and just got the snow off the ground.

I'm so jealous! My son's team is 1 - 0, with 4 rainouts! Blast that rain. And no end in sight. The boys are becoming fatalistic about it -- half expecting a r.o. every day. Son said yesterday "at least we ended on a win!" A week and a half with no games feels like an eternity when you've waited all winter for the season to begin. And r.o.s mean little practice, as the field house cannot accomadate 2 teams. And the field can't be used.

My son's team is 18-2 overall and 6-0 in district. (We do like our South Texas weather!). They take on their toughest district opponent tonight and there could be 1000-2000 people in the stands. I am already getting nervous!

I hear ya shortstopmom! Son started full practice Feb. 15th and has only had field time 2 days and the first game is scheduled for March 25th! No scrimmages, no intrasquad scrimmage, no on field BP! They are ranked in the top 50 in the National polls and had goals of breaking state record for most wins. Going to be really tough without some good field time! Don't even have a starting line up figured out yet. Good news is, most of them have been playing together since they were Sophomores.

20 games already? I am moving to Texas next year! Everything rained out here in the mid-west, games, practices, ROADs...etc. It's very depressing.

It is depressing. Suppose there's an actual name for this ailment? Like S.A.D. -- seasonal affect disorder. Woody, what would it be called? NBBD? ROD? CWD?

Oh yes, Woody. The annual game we get in on the coast. The wind, the sand, the sand in the wind, the shipwrecks.....
Have you ever experienced the eoc (that would be the "east of the Cascades", to you newbies) wind? From h e l l I say. Truly the most appalling conditions my son has ever played in. There is nothing like volcanic dust. But it is dry!

Make that 5 rainouts

I sure feel for you folks who aren't playing! We're 8-4 (with a W over the #3 ranked team in the state) 4-3 in the district. Not bad for a team with only 3 seniors and 3 freshman starters!

My HS squad opens this weekend against a Korean adult team. I don't know what to expect, but I hope they bring some food.

We are about a third of the way through.

varisty is 5-3, JV 3-2-1. Last game is May 5, spring break is a week.

Very strange start to our season here. Bum Jr.'s team is 3-0 but there are a few teams in the city that didn't play because it was raining on one side of town and sunny on the other. Stars were out last night, woke up and it was dripping. This afternoon it was sunny. Went to another game and it began to rain. Then it cleared up. And tonight it's snowing!!!!

..not to worry, if you don't like the weather in the PNW, just wait a few hours.

Same here in Louisiana. One Saturday night our boys played at 9:00pm (tournament) in 36 degree wet cold weather. The very next week on Saturday they played in a tournament at UL, 82 degrees and loads of beautiful sunshine.

..woke up this morning to 1 inch of snow. Now it's partly sunny, the snow is gone.

louisiana09, i'd take 82 anyday but I prefer our dangerous volcanoes and earthquakes versus your tornados and floods.

Well, since you asked ...

My son's team beat its arch-rival 6-4. Our D1-bound LHP threw a complete game with 13 K's. Probably about 800 in the stands -- loads of fun!

This afternoon, my son's team run-ruled its opponent 19-6.

That brings son's team record to 20-2 overall (7-0 in district play). So far, so good!

Louisiana09, how did your district game go?

We are currently 8-3 2-0 and play a non conference game tomorrow. We have played a very tough non conference schedule. Our young guys have gotten some valuable experience so far and are coming along very well. So far every player on the roster has gotten at least one start. We are still rotating a couple of guys in the outfield and a couple at 2b. Our DH role has come down to two different guys and they will continue to rotate until one of them clearly wins the job. We are currently ranked #4 in 3A and split with #1 in a dh , beat #5 in 3A , beat #2 in 2A , lost to #6 4A.

We are getting great leadership from our upperclassman and our practices have been great. We continue to get better everyday in practice. I fully expect us to have another great season. We have two seniors going D-1 and another 2 that have offers from D-2 schools. Our other senior has some D-3 offers and is expected to make a decision soon.

We are currently working to make sure all of our Jr's and Sophs are set for summer baseball. Our freshman will play together with the rising freshman. The season as usual is going by way too fast. This year especially for me since my youngest son is a senior.

We get spoiled here in the Lone Star State as high school sports has such a strong following.
I lived up around the Cincy, OH area for a few years and was amazed at the lack of crowds for football games, etc....
A small town with a HS enrollment of 200-300 kids can get 3,000 people out for a friday night football game.
Baseball doesn't bring out near the fans as football will, but you can still average 250-500 pretty easily.

My youngest son's high school team is now 8-0 to start the season - and monkey boy is doing well and having fun.

Varsity is 7-3 (3-0). Son (8th grade) has pitched an inning and a third for the varsity giving up one unearned run, striking out two, walking two. The JV is 4-3, he plays CF and bats leadoff. Also pitched another 4.0 innings with 5Ks and 4 BB.

8-0 - Thats the way to start it off Gamer! Good luck to Kyle and his team this year. You know we got to start us a team once our kids are in college.

We have our first game, ( all fingers and toes crossed for no snow ) next Friday! Whooo hooo,...zippidy doo dah!!! Gotta get the blanket out, dust off the ol' folding chairs, shine up the binoculars ( I sit out in center field ), charge up the video camera, stock up on gum-seeds-duck tape, and tums ( for my parent friends of pitchers ). Ice chest for gatorades and a soda pop here and there,...yahooooo its baseball time!!

Good Luck to all your sons and daughters---My wife is a big baseball fan like you are Shortstopmom...you two would be a pair I'm sure. She sits way far away from the stands with another mom---they actually watch the game they say. They really don't care if someones fingernail polish matches their new $200.00 purse!They would take a good inning at the plate for their kids over a new purse. At least in the Spring and summer---when football comes she would take the new purse HAHA

We got off to a very slow start,but weve won 5 of our last 7 and have turned things around.Currently were 5-6

4 of our losses were by 1 run too.I think we will have a good year.Im still time behind the dish,and my back is still healing from my 2 stress fractures on my spine,but Im playing.

no games yet here, just snow, rain, wind, more rain, soggy grounds, flooding, & hardly any outdoor practice.

when will it end? ground so saturated that they are saying 2 weeks before we DON'T tear up the fields.

Wow Coach, I sure hear ya on this one. When I read that above it just floored me. My son also is a Senior and I just can't seem to slow it down any. Being able to see his "war paint" under his eyes every game thru the week, that reaction he has after an outstanding play, etc. etc. The only solace I can get right now is that I've heard nothing but praise for his college coach.

Sounds like you're having an awesome season up there! Great coaches build great teams.

Oh...I almost forgot...We are 6-3/3-2 thus far in our 3-AAA classification. Lost a tough one tonight. Son thus far is 4-0, pitched 23 innings with only 1 earned run. Has 30 K's and 4 bb's. He doesn't care about these stats if asked. He'd rather his team be undefeated and steam rolling the region. Gotta love it!

We split our first double-header of the season playing against an adult Korean team. This won't mean anything to you Stateside (except maybe Bob Williams who may know these guys), but they threw Kim Hong-Jib at us in Game 1, and that dude - at age 40 - still has some nasty stuff. In his prime, he was a mid-90s pitcher, the top guy in the Korean Pro League, and #1 on the first Korean National Team. Nice guy. Young Krak duelled him well in his first outing of the season, throwing four innings and striking out 11 of the 12 outs needed. He reached his first-game pitch count of 60-ish, and I brought in the relief. We ended up losing 4-2, but it was MUCH closer than those adult players ever imagined. We gave 'em a good scare! We won the second game 10-5, when they brought in their B-team.
A good start,m and I am LOVING coaching these guys! I daresay we have turned this program into something to be proud of this year. Too much fun!
