Lord what a weekend. Friday night we lost to the # one seeded Chruch Hill 6-1. I was 1-3 with an infield single. Next day we played the host Gate City. With only 5 teams in the tournament, Many teams had a win and a tie or a lost and tie. We beat Gate City which 6-5 with the winning run coming in by 2 of our 2nd string players. I was 0-2 with 2 RBI's. Gate City was suppose to be elimated with a lose and a win. Since we beat them and lost to the 1 seed, we were suppose to move into the championship. They then changed the rules to make them in the championship against the 1 seed team. The coach for Gate City changed the rule to make them into the championship changing the rules after we beat them. We shook hands, had to rules completely read to us and everything before the tournament and they changed the rules to make them into the championship. Although they lost BADLY, many of us are very upset about the hole ordil. Its very very sad.
We made the playoffs! We finished the second half by winning all eight games with a final record of 12-4. It was a second place finish in our region (one game back) and we got the only at-large bid available in the district (there are four "regions" in the "district" with "A" teams), so we were sweating out the selection committee's decision. Son had a good league season - 8 HR, 37 RBI, 19 R, .519/.576/1.058 AVG/OBP/SLG.
Paul VI HS in Virginia today won the VISAA State Championship game over St. Christopher's. Congratulations to Coach Emerson and his entire coaching staff and most importantly the players. The majority of these boys including the 9 seniors on this team have played w/ each other since they were youngsters. I can't think of any better way to finish their high school careers than to go out on top and call themselves State Champions. Paul VI finishes the year 27-3, SBC Champions, WCAC Division Champions, and now Virginia State Champions. What a year and if all of that were not enough, they'll have all nine seniors going on to play college baseball at the next level:
(1) SEC
(2) ACC
(1) C-USA
(2) BIG EAST
(2) A-10
(1) NAIA
Sons team won their league, won their suicide game for first round of playoffs and tonight won their first game of 2/3 series.tomorrow we play one game and if we win we go to championship if not we have a double header to see who goes to championship. they played awesome. great pitching, great defense. my son was 3/4. good night. this team has great chemistry and they really are fired up.

Thanks 2BMom,

Unfortunately I had two others playing that night and wasn't able to make the trip. I heard it was a good series. At times these kids look unbeatable. We all knew it was going to be a great season with the talent we had. Losing our number one and two pitcher looked devastating on paper but a couple of position players really stepped up and here they are.

I hate to see some of them graduate but it was fun watching them grow into the men they have become.

Congrats men.
sons team won the 2/3. rollercoaster double header today after winning first game last night. it was a battle on both teams parts.very exciting. but not home until 1130 and its finals week. so we are headed to the section championship on monday. thats as far as we go in N. Ca. the young men played hard and battled back from behind. Very proud of all of them.
Son's team had a down year in a very deep conference so didn't qualify for state tournament. It took them a while to plug up some holes but about half way thru the season, those holes were filled, the team played very well and went deep into the county tournament before going down in one of the best games you'll ever see at the HS level.
My son came up with some key hits and made some big defensive plays for his part in the team's tournament run. I'm very proud the way they battled all year and turned around their season and end it on a positive note.

This is my last season as head coach for my team before I move to North Carolina to be closer to family members. It has been a truly emotional season for me because I really love coaching these guys but it's a move I need to make. This season has been great because we have faced tremendous adversity and overcame it - especially tonight.

At the start of the season I had to replace all three of my OF because the three from last year graduated. I was confident of the guy I was going to put in RF and use a younger guy in CF and let him learn on the fly but LF was up for grabs. I talked two guys to come out for the team just to give them a chance because they were so athletic. They both didn't get the job done but one of the kids had the greatest attitude and worked really hard and is now my number 4 OF and sometimes starts. The other kid had a terrible attitude and I finally ran him off. I ended up with a back up second baseman in LF and he has done an amazing job out there. So that has been a pleasant surprise to overcome that adversity.

We had a horrible preseason with the weather. We did not get onto our field for a practice before our first scrimmage. Our first practice on a field was during our spring break trip to Myrtle Beach. So we started the season very shaky defensively because we spent the entire preseason on a parking lot. Plus our field had some work done on it during the fall and didn't get finished. We had 15 games scheduled for home and played 3 of them. That is how bad the field was. So that was a hardship to overcome.

The worst part we had to overcome was injuries. I had four guys I thought I could depend on to be starting pitchers - three of them got hurt. One has something wrong with his shoulder and it doesn't allow him to pitch but he still plays RF as long as we limit his throwing. One strained his elbow ligament and he has been limited in what he can throw and we have been very careful with him. The third ended up having Tommy John surgery. So with that many pitchers out we had to develop some younger guys on the fly. I was very happy in how three of the guys developed over the season. That was a huge hardship to overcome.

So all that being said - hurt pitchers, no experience in the OF, field problems - we had a terrible record. We ended the regular season with an 8 - 17 record.

But

It was all worth it tonight. Tonight - Thursday May 22 we won the district championship. We beat a team that defeated us twice during the regular season and we got them 7 - 5. The starting pitcher was one of the guys we had to develop on the fly and he gave us 4 plus strong innings. The guy who came in for relief and ended up with the win was the kid who strained his elbow ligament.

I'm very proud of my guys because we had high expectations but got smacked in the face all season long and we overcame it to win the district tournament. Now we get to play in the regional tournament next week and we hope we can keep going.
Son's team finished the season with a record of 18-2 (two 1 run losses). The best regular season ever for the school. Kid Victory finished the season 5-0 with 2 saves and an ERA of around 1.5. He made the league all star team.

In addition to his pitching, I am very proud of him for his receiving the league's Sportsmanship award. The award is given to one boy and one girl from each school in the league. He played basketball as well as baseball and did so with class and always as an enthusiastic, supportive, positive teammate.

Frequent poster, Holden Caulfield's son plays on the same team and had a terrific season offensively and defensively as the 2B and number 3 hitter in a strong lineup. He also made the league all star team.

Now, on to the state tourney.
Our team lost in the section semi-finals last Thursday. It was a very emotional scene after the game. Our area of CA had a wildfire burning and one players family couldn't see their son's last hs game because they were evacuating their horses. Some students and a teacher lost their homes to the blaze. And to top it off, we lost. There is crying in baseball after all.

The seniors (9) were very sentimental because for many of them it was the last time after years of playing together. It seemed like they were more sad about moving on than about losing the game. They had a great year and I saw tremendous growth and maturity take place with all these boys/men. Now, on to graduation where we (the parents) will be the ones with tears in our eyes.

Rob- good luck to your son's team. You are lucky to have state finals.
My sons team won the section tonight. first time in school history that they have won it. We were down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, lead off single by one of our sophmores, then two outs our lead off guy is up 2 outs, two strikes, been kept off balance all night with curve balls, the guy throws a fast ball hoping to blow it by him, he took it out of the park for a two run HR to win the game. Unbelievable , we had so many fans, they went crazy, it was just an absolutely amazing game. felt bad for the other team. they stayed in their dugouts for over an hour, many were crying, they had the game, if we would of lost it , it wouldnt of been so climatic but to get a home run it was just so cool.felt bad for their pitcher.
A crazy year and though it ended earlier than we had hoped, continued an upswing in the school's baseball program. Went to the semi's in the county tournament only to lose a tough 2-0 decision. In the first round of the state, took the number three seed to 10 innings. The pain is greatest when we remember that we went up one in top of 9th,only to be tied. The game was suspended (darkness combined with rain) continued two days later. WE put up 3 in the top of the 10th but they came back with 4.

An odd twist to my son's year. Although he pitched well and is pleased with progress, his hitting numbers were far more impressive. He hit .430 with 12 doubles a triple and 22 RBI in a 26 game season. He only showcased and contacted colleges regarding his pitching, but after this season he thinks maybe he should be sure to bring his first baseman's glove to Fall workouts.
Update: Son's team got beat 3-0 in the state semi's. Opposing pitcher had a great game - tossed a one hitter against us, two BB's, two HBP's.

It was a competitive game, but without many baserunners, it was hard to win. It wrapped up a very good season by a very balanced team of guys.

It would be nice to be playing in the final (which is today) but the other team was better on Tuesday, with the pitcher they had. We didn't lose so much as got beat.
Son's team, ranked 2nd in the state and 5th in the nation, lost a heartbreaker in regional finals on Friday. They won Game 1 9-1 in the best-of-3 series, but lost the next two. They were up 4-2 in the top of the 7th in Game 2 and were tied at 4 in the top of the 7th in Game 3, but pitching struggles, cold bats toward the end, and an error in the outfield did us in. In Game 2, the team was literally one out away from qualifying for the state tournament. It truly was the death of a dream.

The boys were inconsolable afterwards. Everyone was crying -- players, parents, and coaches. Players trembled as they hugged each other, mourning not only the loss but also the realization that they would never play together again.

The sense of finality is pretty overwhelming right now. For me as a parent, it is pretty hard to believe that my son's high school career is over. In 2 1/2 months, he will leave home for college and life will never be quite the same.

It helps to focus on all the positives. The team ended with a stellar 37-5 record, setting a school record for both wins and success in the playoffs. My son's performance improved incrementally as the season progressed and he made some notable contributions -- both offensively and defensively -- in the team's playoff run.

There is nothing like high school baseball. What an awesome ride...

This is what baseball is all about imho. Everyone fails at one time or another to achieve the ultimate prize. It has nothing to do with that however. It has to do with selling out every part of your body and soul to achieve a team goal. In the end, that is victory - regardless of the outcome.
infield08,

When my sons team won their section as mentioned before the other team was devastated as your sons team was. As happy as I was for my sons team my heart went out to the other team. I know its baseball and life on and on with all that but its still tough when you are so close.
For me now my son is playing senior legions, but its like nothing that his senior year was. it was an incredible senior year. He received a scholardship, team won league, he was MVP, team won section he was chosen 1st team all metro,he did everything a senior could do for accomplishments. As I am putting together his scrap books these last two weeks for his graduation party,I was in tears going through all the pics of baseball and his life before my eyes. He is a man now and the thought of him leaving in 10 weeks just blows my mind completely. We will be empthy nesters, he will be close so we can see him, but his bedroom will be empty,no more HS, lunches, dinner time,Like has been mentioned before to all parents of younger ones enjoy the moments because they go by so fast. As all my sons accomplishments in baseball I am most proud of the person that he is,the teamate he is and the son that he has been to us. I love him more than life itself and thats from a mothers heart. Its like he is my breath of life. Since the day I knew we were going to have him in our lives it has been one joy after another. Of course mixed in with some hormones, school issues, argument over curfew, etc etc, I would do it all over in a heartbeat, every second of it.Baseball to me has helped my son become who he is, through adversity, hardwork, dissapointments, accomplishments, being a teamate , playing as a team, so many wonderful life lessons. People over the years who dont understand our crazy baseball lives say you spent his whole life running around to baseball games, IT is so much more to that then what it seems.the travel and family trips I could write a book literally, There are things my husband and I will remember for ever and there is more chapters to come. But this HS one is closed now and it was a wonderful experience.
Of course I know that this is a BASEBALL site, not softball, but I wanted to share how my daughter's team ended their season. They were playing in the championship game for sectionals--they had never even won a sectional game before.

The coach switched things around for the sectional tournament. The player who caught all 4 years was moved to second base. Not sure why. The coach brought up the sophomore catcher to play that position in sectionals.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, there was no score. With 2 outs, the coach called for an intentional walk. The base runner tried to steal second and succeeded, due to a bad throw which ended up in the outfield. THEN.

The next pitch skipped off the catcher's glove to the backstop. The runner on second advanced to third and stopped. The catcher stood up to look for the ball. And then stopped, as if she expected someone else to find the ball. The pitcher RACED to the backstop to retrieve the ball, but it was too late. The runner SCORED EASILY from third, standing up. There was no play on her...... The catcher still had the mask on. She didn't even take it off.

And the final score was 1-0. Game over, season over.

And there were lots of tears and even more questions.....

thanks ... have to admit it was really amazing being there ... also the first 6 batters in that video all had 2 strikes on them (which wasn't shown) and added to the intensity - games like this is what makes baseball such a great game....

BTW That was great camera work from the stands. Couldn't have been easy keeping a steady hand through all that.
