Our team plays 7 inning games at only bats 9 players in the lineup every game.

We've played 15 games so far this season and my son bats 4th in the lineup.

He's only had one game (so far) this season with more than 3 plate appearances. (Stress: We're talking PA and not At Bats.)

Is that sort of typical or is our offense just not up to par?

In HS where you play 7 innings and only bat 9, and you bat in the top of the lineup, how many PA should you get in a game? Three seems like the minimum, right?

In order for a #4 hitter to get a fourth plate appearance twelve hitters have to get on base as long as there aren’t any double plays or caught stealing.

I recollect my son on a first place team batting third for two years getting a fourth plate appearance about two-thirds of the time. In the most competitive games he only got three at bats.

The real difference maker is batting first or second. It’s why many college teams bat their best average and power hitter second.

Well, if you think about it, at a minimum there will be 21 PA's for the entire team.  Only the top 3 in the lineup are guaranteed a third PA.  Any deeper in the lineup (4th on back), there is no guarantee of a third PA, let alone a 4th - especially if the offense is struggling to get men on base.

Similar to RJM's son, my son who was 2nd in the lineup had a 4th appearance about 2/3's of the time.  On a very rare occasion, a 5th plate appearance.

I do remember a American Legion game (9 innings) where he went 5 for 5 with two doubles and three singles.  The team came back from a 8-3  deficit to win 18-8.  And of course, wife had the video camera while at our daughter's softball game.  Go figure.
