A-Rod went 1-4. I didn't see the entire game, but I did see one of the three outs. It was a laser liner to right with a man on base. This thing never got more than 15' off the ground, but it carried all the way to the RF for an out. I think it would've bored a hole in the outfield wall if the RF hadn't stopped it.

Now, what are you monkeys on A-Rod's back going to tell me next? That he should've hit it SOFTER, so it would've landed? That he should've hit under it by another 1/32 inch, so it would've gone out? That he should work more on his "rotational swing" or some of the other gobbledygook that passes for expertise on this site, so that he could've pulled it and everything else in order to serve the almighty God, the home run?

Yeah, everybody's an expert, meanwhile A-Rod hit .290 with 35 HR's and 121 RBI. And that qualifies as an "off year".

Anytime you Yankee jer... uh, fans want to get rid of him, I know a few teams that'd love to take him off your hands. And I think Cooperstown is already clearing a space for his jersey. I hope he picks some other team's jersey.

My vote would go to: He'll do what he can do and the Yankees will do whatever it takes.

I just don't get all the A-Rod hate. Like Midlo pointed out, he had a pretty darned good year yet he's hated so much. So maybe he and Jeter aren't as close as they used to be. Is that somehow OUR problem? Personally, it doesn't affect me one bit. Have there been instances where I cringed when the Yanks could've used a clutch hit but he K'd looking? Sure. But there have been just as many times where he's come up big.

And for what it's worth, if he does have a less-than-stellar post season, he certainly won't be the first "star" to dissapoint. For the Yankees, there have been several other Yankees with disappointing series. I used to be a big Pirates fan and Bonds and Bonilla made me sick. How about Ted Williams, where's the hate for his post season numbers?
As soon as the boo-birds came out in NY I became an A-Rod fan. Pros like A-Rod do not deserve that kind of reaction.

First let me clarify that 9/11 will never take a backseat to anything that has happened in my life, it was a National tragedy that happened to occur in NYC.

With that said.....Has anyone noticed since the 9/11 tragedy that the media seems to go after NYC sports teams and fans of every sport fans with "kid gloves". There used to be some National gusto and pride in trying to destroy King George's empire. Sure most out of town press has backed A-Rod through his lynching, but 6 years ago they would have had a field day with the fans of NYC and their unappreciative and insensitive behavior. Maybe I'm the one out of wack, but the press seems to have shifted to a gentler "line" concerning the Yankees yet the Yankee fans borish and pompus attitude still resides. I'm not sure if it's nothing but 9/11 fallout.

I only hope that if the Yanks get to, and win the World Series, that A-Rod is the MVP. Then let's see how he is treated.

Maybe all this stuff about Jeter is a window into the souls of Yankees fans.

Jeter will also have his own corner in Cooperstown, no doubt. I think he's fabulous, he's had an MVP year, and he's got a leg up on playoff MVP now too. Nobody has said anything negative about Jeter.

And yet, the anti-A-Rod folks keep dragging him into this discussion. Why?

Is it just that NYY fans love Jeter so much that they have to tear down A-Rod in order to affirm their love for Jeter?

It's like I'm listening to a couple of middle school girls argue over who's cuter or more popular. Grow up!

Here are a few things to consider:

*Imagine that a guy hit .400 in clutch situations. He still failed 60% of the time. So I don't care who you want to place on a pedestal, you can still find AB's where he didn't get the job done. Telling me that A-Rod missed some opportunities rates a great big, "Well, duh!" 121 RBI means he came through an awful lot, too. Only a handful did better and this was supposedly an "off year" for him.

*A-Rod was a better fielding SS than Jeter. You can look it up. Yet when A-Rod came to New York, it was Jeter who insisted on staying at SS and A-Rod who volunteered to move to 3B for the good of the team. That's why you get to have both of them in your lineup, guys.

So Torre is batting him 6th? That makes for one heckuva lineup. A-Rod did what he was asked without griping. Contrast that to other superstars like, say, Soriano. (You know, the guy the Yankees traded away to get A-Rod.)

deldad, something is seriously wrong with you if you don't appreciate this guy.

As for why A-Rod's teams lost before: He was on a playoff team in Seattle. In Texas, his high salary was beyond the team's reach and kept the Rangers from putting together a deep roster. Only with the Yankees can A-Rod find deep enough pockets both to pay him and to fill out the lineup with other studs as well.

No one player ever won a World Series. And lots of great individual players never did. I heard a rumor it's a team game. A-Rod is a great individual player AND a great team player. He's about to help his team probably win the World Series (which I hate to say because I am NOT a Yankees fan!). Try to enjoy it and appreciate it while you can, because in MLB it doesn't happen every year.
Wow!

Alot of intensity based on a fun poll.

Calling people jerks - mentioning hate - and telling people to grow up. LOL - Now that is the silly part IMO.

How about this?

I think A-Rod is "The Cooler". I dont think he can get it done when it counts most. No hate or anything else - just an opinion on his hitting prowess when it counts most.

He's a Cooler. IMO.

And Midlo - I am a Mets fan. Not a Yankees fan. I would like to see the Yankees lose every game for the rest of my natural life. Wink

Let's hear your opinion AFTER the post season...when it counts most. Personally, I think he's been given a bum wrap by the media for a multitude of reasons, few of which are worthy. I'd LOVE to see him get the WS MVP and hitting .600 in the series. Big Grin

But I'm wondering if the boo-birds would give him kudos or just make excuses?
There is no denying the talent of AROD but there is also no denying the fact that despite his great numbers he is no a "clutch" guy- It has been the same everywhere he played

Adding to the problem is Jeter having the year he has and what Jeter does in post season

Why is AROD hitting 6th---look at the guys hitting ahead of him--that answers your question
Midlo appreciate him-I appreciate the fact that there are alot of guys I would rather have on my team and you can't get by the fact that the 25 million dollar man is batting 6th. I realize that Tom Hicks was the idiot who paid him that ridiculous salary and I would have signed the contract myself. No doubt he will hit 800 career homeruns and will have the stats to be talked about in the same breath with the games best. But at this point in his career he is the cooler in the playoffs.

Being a lifelong Oriole fan, I look at Eddie Murray the same way. Just a cooler in the playoffs but statistically you mention him in the same breath as Aaron and Mays.
I'll just make two more comments on the subject:

1 - Jeter gets my MVP and HOF vote; True Captain vote, etc. etc. No doubt in my mind.

2 - There is a reason Joe Torre is managing the greatest team in sports history and we are typing away on the keyboards........I'd bet he not only understands ARod a heck of a lot more than we do but I'd bet his post season comments arn't anything but positive and come April 1 ARod will be in the three slot. And maybe he will be there sooner than that.

Make it three comments - I LOVE NEW YORK!
It confuses me. A-Rod goes to the Yankees without "mouthy" promises of batting titles, world series, or proclaiming he is a savior and because of the bottomless pockets of the Yankees give him a bizillion dollars. Then he does not come through with unsaid promises so he's a schmuck. I actually appauld him for great negotiations. My thought from the get go was that he is not being paid completely for his Yankee contributions but rather that he is not contributing for the Red Sox.

The "what if" game goes like this. What if A-Rod went to the Red Sox, could he maybe have covered the 8 game difference between the teams which would have meant the Yanks would be watching the post season on tv this Fall?. Maybe. If that's the case maybe his salary was a good "company" investment. At the same time they have A-Rod sitting in the window with a "for sale" sign around his neck and they end up dumping a big contract to a team of their choice, and getting a handful of players in return that will fill the holes in their aging lineup down the road. As fans we live in a world of "todays" expectations, in the business side of professional baeball I think it is much deeper and that is why the Yankee brass was not up in arms like the fans were. They provided enough "lip service" to satisfy the fans and stroked A-Rod enough to make it through the year.

Bottom line A-Rod had an ok year, the Yanks are in the playoffs, he did not play for the Red Sox, and maybe the best thing about an "ok" year is that the NY fans will not be up in arms when the dump his huge contract to a team of their choice.

Rz1 and NYdad, I agree, here are some things that you might like.

This being one of ARod’s worst years…

Only David Ortiz had more RBI+Runs scored than ARod in the American League.
The Yankees won their division
ARod total RBI+runs scored = 234
Jeter total RBI+runs scored = 215

No question Jeter had the best year, but Boston’s 3B finished the season with 75 less RBI+runs scored than ARod had.

The Yankees scored 110 more runs than Boston this year, 75 of them came from one position. Switch the two 3B and Boston gains the 75 difference, Yankees lose the 75 difference… 150 run difference. Or about 1 run for every game… That would have to make a big difference.

Maybe Yankee fans should rethink this ARod thing? I wonder if the Red Sox fans are?

By the way, for those who are mad about ARods salary. The Yankees actually pay more to Jeter.

And about that change of position thing. Look at these stats…

Last year ARod played SS was 2003, before going to the Yankees and switching to 3B.
In 2003… Both Jeter and ARod played SS
Totals
PO: ARod – 227… Jeter – 160
Assists: ARod – 464… Jeter – 271
DPs: ARod – 111… Jeter – 51
Errors: ARod – 8… Jeter – 14
Fld%: ARod - .981… Jeter - .961
Gold Glove Award at SS went to ARod
He also won the Gold Glove the year before

Yet this guy had no problem switching positions despite being the best shortstop in the game at the time.

I like Jeter a lot, my son was his room mate one year.
I just don’t understand the ARod thing at all.
I actually feel sorry for him.
Wow! All the hate mongers came out way back when , when I called him his MLB nickname, "The Cooler".
Fact: ARod is one of the most talented players in the game.
Fact: ARod will be mentioned with the greats and will make the HOF.
Fact: ARod's bad years are career years for some others.
Fact: ARod and only ARod thinks the weight of the world is on his shoulders, thinks the fans care whether he comes thru or not.
See, if he does his part and doesn't implode, and the Yanks win (oh no!) then the fans will accept him.
But he came here wth a rep between players that he is extremely talented, and much in love with himself. He shows it in his face after every error, lacks professionalism.
Until he learns to wear Jeter's face after an error, and move on and contribute positively for his team, he will continue to be looked at as a Non-Clutch guy, and that seems to drive him crazy.
I am sure most of you read or heard of Giambi's (Roid head) displeasure with him at the seasons end. Jeter was also quoted and so was Torre. They implied that he has to show up and do more when it counts. Giambi told him to his face in front of reporters.
What did ARod respond with. I won't quote because I only heard that part on BBT. But he said something like he already did alot, why don't they pick on somebody else.
He should own up and tell the press that he will bear his share of responsibility, (beacause thats what they want to hear and so do fans) and then move on like a pro.
That may not happen in my lifetime.
Several past teammates have expressed dislike for the guy and many have liked him as well.
I could never hate or dislike the guy, I just see what I see, JMHO.
I guess its all about current events. If anyone cares, look up Alex Rodriguex at baseball reference. Check out his play off record. Even his first playoff with the Yankees. And the playoff against the Yankees when he was with Seattle. Not stunning numbers I guess, but far from being a choker.

The personal stuff is a different topic, altogether. I just don't know him well enough to know any of that stuff other than what I see on Sports Center and read.

It does seem like the Yankees are doing fine despite him, if that's the case.

Maybe he will be another guy that New York ate up. Then again maybe not!

Can't say if I like him or not... Don't really know him. I do agree he gives off the wrong vibes at times, but how does a person deal with his situation?

Prediction... Within a couple weeks, this topic will either be very popular, or there will be hardly any discussion. Others can guess how that will happen.
My opininon - ARod apparently deals with issues of team expectations, fan expectations, incredible salary, playing in New York, playing with the Yankees in New York, a far-from-predictable-at-times club owner, as a person who has established several milestones, etc. etc. pretty darned well in my opinion. His bad day at the office is most likely far better than How many that have come before him in similar situations?

I only know ARod the player and not the man. Can't discuss what I don't know about anything except what the media gives us. So far, in my book, under the conditions it's been pretty decent.
