Coach Jaska runs a fine program up at CMU. His latest recruiting class has been rated 27th with Michigan at 39th or 40th. There are several prospect camps and ways to get his notice.
Also closer to home is Oakland, Wayne State and Eastern to name just a few.
Did tyou know former Cy Young winner
Bob Welch - V
OAK 27-6 2.95 127 SO
Graduated from H.P. high school.
Good Luck
We spent time with Coach Villano and Jaska at CMU while they recruited our son this summer. CMU seems to have a very good program and history of success. Talked to 2 college coaches that use to compete against them and that was very positive. Very good facilities with plans to add practice field, lights, and new indoor facility adjacent to the ball field.
Steve,
You asked if I knew Bob Welch. Personnally No, unfortunately, but you can't walk down the halls of Hazel Park High without knowing who Bob Welch is. There is even a street named after him here. But besides Bob in Baseball, Hazel Park also had Joe Roa, graduate from their great halls. Joe right now is on I do believe the Pirates (Was on the Twins, but believe he got traded in 05) , but on the Injured list. Which is great for the little leaguers here. He attends alot of games in the summer and helps the Rec. Program here. Thanks for the info. and I think Eastern might be a good fit for my son..
CMU is an excellent school, but another option (albeit a bit smaller) is Grand Valley State. They have had an excellent program for many years, and play in a good conference (GLIAC).
Oakland is in transition - they didn't really help Avery as coach, but it looks like they're going to actually give some money to the new guy (Dylan Putnam). A potential sleeping giant.
David Grewe was also the assitant coach at Central Michigan befor ND. He know a lot about baseball and hitting. I dealt with him a few years back when he was recruiting my son and I must say he is impressive. Go on the Michigan State Baseball website to get further info. IMHO he will take the program to new heights.
I have meet Coach Grewe and he is an articulate & knowledgable individual. I am curious as to what level he can take MSU since they haven't been real successful prior to his arrival. He appears to have things headed in the right direction with some major facilities improvements forth coming the year after next. I am impressed with the coach, just a have some concerns as to how quick he can turn it around and of course the weather in April in Michigan. Any of input would be great. Thanks.
To turn it around is subjective. MSU will not likely go to the CWS for quite some time. This is due to the weather up north and the NCAA slowly changing the rules of scheduling. Keep in mind all of the Michigan schools will have mediocre teams untill they can recruit and build a pitching staff of horses like the top 25 normally due. These are all great kids in fact they do get few superstars that move on to the MLB It just will be awhile until parity like we have in football.
