Not sure wehre this post should go. If it should be moved just let me know and I will post in the proper forum. Anyway, just a quick question. Is it common for MLB scouts to actively look at players/pitchers in the Northeast in January?

Thanks in advance

I don't know about "looking at", as it can be hard to see them in action at that time.

But if your son is draft eligible (whether in HS or college), it's not unusual for home visits to happen over the winter, especially if the player is in the running to be a very early pick.  Many teams as well as the MLB Scouting Bureau do this as a "getting to know you" thing, maybe evaluating the player's home life, gauging whether the player is signable, and perhaps even collecting a specimen or conducting other tests.

They also can schedule to watch you work out, e.g. come watch a kid take BP at an indoor facility.

It's been a few years however when my son was a senior a couple clubs had indoor workouts in NJ to see players.  For the pitchers they knew they weren't at 100% with their throwing programs so much of it was just to see a few pitches and a chance to meet with the players.  The position players did mostly running, infield and BP workouts.

I also know that my son's showcase team holds a December "camp" every year that has over 30 Colleges and quite a few scouts that attend.  These players are pretty much working out all winter so  the pitchers are probably at 80% to 90% game ready. Then they back off for a couple weeks before doing their tune up for the April HS season.

Yes, if that area scout has a lot of players to see, he cannot wait until spring.  He has to identify those guys now. If they see what they like they will show up in the spring.
