I was watching the Cub game last night and a play happened that Bob Brenley commented on and it got me thinking.
Man on First, 1-0 count on batter. Runner on first fakes a break to 2nd, batter hit a foul tip that the catcher holds on to. Catcher sets himself to throw to first but does not. Brenly comments that the catcher didn't get a good grip on it and that is why he didn't throw. I said to myself, "no, its because it was a foul and the ball is dead when its not the third strike. That's why catcher didn't throw."
I was surprised that a ex big league catcher would miss that but then I started thinking that maybe the caught foul tip is different than a regular foul ball. Obviously if it was fouled off to the side on the ground, its a dead ball and the runner can't be picked off but what about on a caught foul tip which was only strike one. Was I wrong?
