There was another thread in the fall that that turned into a dumpster fire. How about a new thread with some general info?

1. When does the portal open and close for summer of 2023?

2. I know D1baseball posts portal info. Anyone know when they might post current players? (I subscribe but only see 2022 info on the site as of the other day)

3. Lets hear pros/cons for players entering after freshman/sophomore/junioryears?

Anyone have any other questions or info please post to help others.

I think MidAtlaticDad's stat is huge.  Most players/parents think if I get in the portal I will get all these offers but that is not the case.  If you did not play where you were, you don't have any numbers for coaches to look at.  You normally also do not have any references because most coaches are not going to give a good reference to a guy who is leaving their program.  You have to go back to your HS days for any significant information to provide.  If you are leaving to move up or down and played some, there is a little information but the references are still not there.  It is not as easy as most would think jumping in the portal.  The world does not just open up for most unless you are a D1 wanting to move down a level or were highly recruited out of HS.  Or you are the mid-major guy or below who just blew it up at your level and others are waiting in line to take you, but that is the minority not the majority.

Maybe I've become jaded over the last few years, but going into the last weeks of the season all I have been thinking about for my 2022 freshman son has been "Does he have enough of a resume if he's shown the door?"

He's at 20+ innings and will likely make at least 1 more appearance in long relief so he'll have stats, but we'll see.

Hope for the best but plan for the worst....

My son missed the season with an injury and I am in the same boat.  Hoping for the best, planning for the worst. He has a very strong JUCO track record to fall back on, but he will also have to answer questions about his injury, should we get to that point.

I know the board is negative towards walking on, but if he does get shown the door or has money cut, I wonder if that might be the best option.  I can't imagine a lot of coaches are going to be lining up to give money to a player who missed a season.

@PABaseball posted:

Does that 48% number include grad transfers? We have a few in the portal who threw their names in the ring in the event they had breakout senior years knowing they had very little interest in continuing.

I also think the 48% is optimistic. The 48% is for NCAA schools. Does that number climb to 80% is you include NJCAA?

Yes... 883 undergrad and 276 graduate.

@CollegebaseballInsights, might have a feel for juco (and NAIA) transfers. It's not included in the NCAA report.

Choosing to walk on (at a perceived “better” school) instead of taking a scholarship offer (at a perceived “lesser” school) is the decision that I think is almost always a bad one. When walking on is your only chance to continue playing there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I did it and it worked out for me. But it’s a tough road that is uphill all the way. Even for pitchers, although their odds are much better.

@nycdad posted:

What does "student-athletes reported to have enrolled..." mean? Reported how? Are they going by the NCAA eligibility center? If that's the case that's just covering players that transferred to another D1 or D2 school, not D3s or or JUCOs.

Don't know. The d1baseball.com transfer tracker includes juco, NAIA and D3. But I don't know if that's coming from the NCAA, or they're filling in the blanks on their own.

That's the thing, d1baseball.com rarely updates where a player ends up. That is completely self reported unless it's a well known player.

I don't think there is data on if/where a player that enters the portal ends up. Maybe @CollegebaseballInsights has something?

I can say, and this is just anecdotally , most of the players I know or the ones my kids have told me about that wanted to continue to player were able to land somewhere. An interesting stat would be what percentage of players that enter the portal went on to play 4 years.

After a particularly rough couple of games earlier this season a coach on my kids squad made a comment along the lines of: "you guys better be ready to enter the !@#$% portal if things don't change". One can take that a lot of ways but there is generally some grain of truth to any comment like that made regardless of the situation. Son has thought a lot about things since then.

If someone plans to go the JUCO route do they need to enter the portal prior to talking to JUCO coaches?

Is it best to enter portal then figure out available options or try to do some legwork in advance? What does that legwork look like?

I think it depends on the situation. From what I've seen, players that request to enter have probably had conversations with coaches already.

That’s an incomplete list but wow! I chose 5 as an arbitrary number and made a list of the schools that have more players than that in the portal (according to the post by @baseballhs). To me, a big number of players in the portal is a huge red flag. Anyone considering any of these programs better do some digging:

Bucknell  10, Central CT  7, Charlotte  6, Coastal Carolina  7, UConn  8, Davidson  8, Delaware  6, Gardner Webb  7, Holy Cross 8, Lafayette  7,  Lindenwood  10, Longwood  7, Middle Tenn  6, Presby  6, St Peters  10,  San Francisco  7,  St Bonaventure  6,  UTSA  6, Western Carolina  8, Wichita State  8

It’s not hard to see a pattern among these schools. All are mid-majors except UConn and the majority are not highly regarded baseball programs. Although I know there are a number of P5 schools that would be on this list if it was 100% accurate.

Son's team still playing, but coach met with seniors already so they could have some clarity. There is 1 player in there from son's school. He's a grad transfer. He played 4 years, and I think based on academics and his ability he wanted to see if he could play a 5th year at a higher level. My guess is the HC tried to keep him and depending on his prospects may be back.

There are also many kids on that list that are already at their new school and have. played a season.

Bucknell, Davidson, Holy Cross & Lafayette all are 4 year schools with no grad program. Academically all 4 are HA and similar situations to Ivies. Majority (not all) kids that enter in fall are seniors and do not have a choice to go back to program.

Folks,

You gotta do your homework!  Bucknell (9 of 10 are grad-transfer), Davidson (8 of 8 are grad transfer). The same for Holy Cross and St. Bonaventure.  That's all I really checked.  Some players (Markontonatos @St. Peters are clearly looking to upgrade--his coach is certainly not cutting him loose!)

You really have to examine each and every team and each player you see in the portal. Don't generalize! Definitely do some digging!

My daughter plays hockey and will graduate a year from now. She has a Covid year and a redshirt year from a torn ACL. She will enter the hockey portal in August for the 24/25 season and will have 2 years to play in grad school should she choose to pursue that option. Has loved her experience as a student athlete at her current school. I am guessing that some of these situations are similar. She has teammates that have graduated the last 2 seasons and have/are playing 5th years at Vermont, Syracuse, Maine, UConn, and others.

What I said was not an indictment of any of those schools. It was an observation along with a suggestion to do some digging to find out what’s going on at these schools if you have interest. My contention, which I stand by, is that a lot of players in the portal from the same school is something you need an explanation about.

I understand and agree with you. But, a lot of parents on here may not do their homework and see your list of schools that have no graduate programs and assume they are bad. I don't have a kid at those schools but certainly Bucknell, Davidson, Holy Cross, Lafayette, etc. should not be categorized as schools to possibly avoid.

Exactly. I'm sure the patriot league schools on that list aren't cutting kids to bring in JUCO kids and transfers. They are no where near fully funded (I've heard 1 scholarship?). Can't imagine a family/kid thinking it's a good idea to go pay 70k to maybe get playing time and lose to Army every year.

Side note, Lafayette would routinely come to my kids' HS to give presentations for the juniors. It was horrific. Was basically "Can't afford us? Go into a ton of a debt to come to our school which isn't an Ivy!"

My freshman season’s finished today. The team underperformed. After finishing second in conference last year they did not make the conference tournament this year.

he has his end of season interview 21:30 ET.

we shall see……

Exit meeting went well according to my son. No surprises. For next year they told him they expect him to be a weekend starter or used several times a week out of the pen…

Of course things can change, but for now he’s off to summer ball in mid June and is training remotely with Tread.

Thank you for all of the info thus far.

Asking for a friend:

This friend just finished their freshman year and they were invited back for their sophomore season (despite several cuts on the team). The player does not want to miss out on the development opportunities the JUCO route offers and wants to explore those options knowing that they cannot go back to their current school.

Does this player ask to enter the portal or just start exploring  JUCO opportunities (like emailing/calling coaches or networking in the baseball community)?

Are there risks associated with entering the portal other than most likely not being able to return to the team they are leaving?

If the player goes the JUCO route and is fortunate enough to play his Jr season at a Division 1 school will they still have the ability to utilize the portal between their Jr and Sr year or is each player only allowed 1 portal entrance?

Thank you in advance!

This friend just finished their freshman year and they were invited back for their sophomore season (despite several cuts on the team). The player does not want to miss out on the development opportunities the JUCO route offers and wants to explore those options knowing that they cannot go back to their current school.

Technically, I think he can talk to juco coaches without being in the portal. However, doing that while the D1 coach is under the impression that he is returning would be very bad form. The baseball community has no secrets. If he contacts a juco coach, there's a very good chance that information gets back to the D1 coach. IMO, he should finalize his decision to leave the school before talking to anyone.

I don't know of any risks associated with entering the portal if you know that you won't be returning to your first school.

A juco transfer doesn't use up the one-time transfer waiver. Assuming he meets all of the other criteria, he could use that waiver for the hypothetical junior/senior year transfer.
