Oregon State Opens Season With No-Hitter

HILO, Hawaii (AP) -- Defending national champion Oregon State opened its season with its first no-hitter in 40 years.

Mike Stutes, Josh Keller, Mark Grbavac and Jorge Reyes combined for the third no-hitter in school history as the Beavers blanked Hawaii-Hilo 5-0 Thursday.

Stutes struck out seven hitters in five innings, then Keller worked two innings and Grbavac and Reyes one each.

"It just shows that we've got a lot of potential in our pitching staff, maybe more than people give us credit for," shortstop Darwin Barney said.

Catcher Mitch Canham had four hits.

It was Oregon State's first no-hitter since 1967, when Cleve Benson, Eric Selberg and Jack Humphrey throttled Portland 11-0. Fred Gallagher tossed the Beavers' only other no-hitter, going the distance in a 1-0 win over Montana in 1947.
"There are two kinds of people in this game: those who are humble and those who are about to be." Clint Hurdle

Oh MY!...Someone has to stand up for the HH Vulcans!....

While by NO means a DI powerhouse...

According to Boyd's World....

Hawaii-Hilo was 15-34...but had a stregnth of 2006 schedule in the top third of DI...

Much tougher than many schools with weaker schedules, but big names who made the NCAA's...

But I guess since they too play on the west coast....

GO VULCANS!

Cool 44

GO BEAVS!

Geez, Beenthere ...

Talk about a wet blanket!

It was a no hitter - I don't care if they were playing the Hawaii School for the Blind!

First no-hitter in 40 years in the first game after a national championship, I think it's OK to make mention of it.

I just talked to Stutes' dad. Definitely the start they were looking for in his junior season.
Wet blanket? You gotta' try and keep dry out there some how or other...nothing wrong with using an old blanket to shed the rain.

Hawaii School for the Blind? Maybe.

But certainly...

"Students attending the Hawaii Center for the Deaf and the Blind can participate in 19 interscholastic varsity and junior varsity sports jointly with Kalani High School." Spring sports season includes both JV and Varsity Boy's Baseball.

Thumbs up to Kalani High School for helping out and offering this great opportunity to the athletes at Hawaii Center for the Deaf and Blind......Go Dolphins!
