Son is a 21-year-old LHP. He's had intermittent pain in his throwing shoulder, but only when throwing the ball as hard as he can. He went to the orthopedist today, and the doctor could not recreate the pain in his office. He has full range of motion, and dr. says that means it can't be the labrum. Supposed to have the MRA in the next few days, and has arranged to take a week off (last week before playoffs) in the meantime. Just wondering whether anyone else's pitcher has had the same problem? Am thinking maybe this is a sore spot waiting to tear, which is why he still has full range of motion. He also tends to have a rather high threshold for pain, which could be disguising a bigger problem. Thoughts?

I am not a doctor but know more than I might like about labrum issues in the shoulder.  Never heard that full ROM rules out labrum issues and would doubt that is true. The labrum very much involves stability. In Milb, the medical exams actually document testing for the labrum and it is not full ROM.

Hopefully the issue is not related to the labrum and this comment by the doctor is totally irrelevant.

ONLY when he is throwing as hard as he can???? That would a problem I think...Anytime you have pain when throwing that is a signal the body is giving him to say something is wrong...IMO he needs to stop what he's doing and figure out what is causing the pain...Is it mechanical? Did it just start or has it been going on for awhile and he is only now admitting it? What is the pain on a scale of 1-10? Is his velocity down recently? Address the pain and figure out why it is happening. Ignoring it and getting on the mound is about the worst thing you can let him do...

Patient:  Doctor, my shoulder hurts when I throw the baseball as hard as I can.

Doctor:  Well, stop throwing the baseball for a month and see if that helps.

+1for this.  Lefthooks shoulder problem started with an impengement, that led to a labrum tear/separation. He never lost full range of motion, so I think you need a second opinion.

KT tape for rotator cuff I don't sell KT tape but recently blew out my calf muscle; had lots of pain & limped into work. I bought a roll of KT tape (about $20) and when applied, pain and limp GONE . You can wear the tape for 3-4 days and even shower with it. I'm an obvious fan. Perhaps your son can use the tape on days that he pitches. Check out the Youtube link above.
