It's clearly a beautiful new stadium and Omaha is really making a nice downtown area along the river. We'll be there for the opener and I'm looking forward to it.

However, I will miss the charm of Rosenblatt, parking in someone's front yard and all of the vendor tents up and down the hill on 13th Street.

BTW, see that suspension bridge beyond Left Field? That is a beautiful walking bridge that swings in the wind. My son and I didn't get 1/4 of the way across before we chickened out and went back!

Me too and from speaking to some folks in the area (customers) they hve some issues with the new park lots of money spent in a time that most don't even have jobs in those parts of the country.
That's not really an accurate picture of the situation, TPM. But, I've heard that too. In reality, unless Omaha did something about the facilities they were going to lose the CWS. The stadium locked it in Omaha for a long time. Also, while times are tough everywhere, the employment picture is awfully good in Omaha...and Nebraska overall. And, in reality, the stadium wasn't that expensive when compared to other facilities built recently.

Most of the people grumbling were older people who had season tickets for years and years and simply didn't want to change/lose their seat location. The way they treated their CWS season ticket holders was pretty bad. To sum it up it was "send us your money, if you want a seat....we'll let you know where it is".
Tx-Husker,
Yes, could have lost the Series if improvements or a new stadium not done, but FWIW, for some games the stands aren't even filled to capacity. For some folks they took away $$, that includes the parking in people's yards, the beer gardens in their backyards, etc.

We may not be talking about the same Omaha, especially the burbs. Used to be some of the best customers, now businesses are closed or hurting and last summer was not as profitable as in the past.

The people of the midwest are pretty practical, so I can understand how they feel.

Sorry, the CWS not played at Rosenblatt will never be the same.

JMO. Smile
I don't disagree, TPM. It's more of a matter of what you're comparing it too. Omaha and Nebraska in general hasn't had the hardtimes from unemployment, housing values, etc that most of the rest of the country has....but values are still down and unemployment up compared to better times. They don't have near the state and local gov't budget problems we hear about around the country. But if you ask locals, sure it's tough.

As for the stadium, people hated adding lights at Wrigley...but they are over it now. You don't hear many talk about old Yankee stadium any more. Some people hated Texas Stadium closing, but they are over it now that Jerry's World is open. I have not seen it with my own eyes, but it sure looks like they did a good job with Rosenblatt's replacement...and in time people will see new is better. And, believe it or not, people will start saying they like the additional parking the Zoo now has. Big Grin

And woody, trust me those beer gardens will travel!

We stayed for a few days at the Embassy Suites downtown @250, then we moved to a Best Western for 100 a night a bit farther away. The Hilton (where son was staying) wanted 200 but could only accomodate us for one night. That was in '06. I am going to imagine with the stadium downtown the prices will be outrageous.

Don't et me wrong, Rosenblatt was way outdated, we had to wait forever in lines for food, the store over crowded, the breezeways dark, but that went with the experience. JMO.

Will the Omaha Royals be playing in the new stadium. What else are they planning to do with the facility?

I was calling Omaha today, got a lady on the phone, asked "what do you think of the new stadium". To which she replied, "what new stadium". Roll Eyes
Many of the businesses I call are mom and pops in town and now out of business.

We're going for a large youth tournament that is played in Omaha/Council Bluffs/Lincoln during the CWS. We are required to stay in hotels arranged by the tournament organizer so we're kinda stuck.

Last year's hotel was $159 and it wasn't worth $79.

DK went 2 years out to Omaha in HS to play the tournament. While out there got a call from a guy named Andy Ford, with an invite to the PG National. Just baseball's son was there that year also. Smile BTW, that summer was the inaugural year for AFLAC.

That was a while ago, great memories though. They stayed in Lincoln, and it was still expensive.
Son came home both times and said I am going to go to college and play in Omaha!
I swear I think the whole experience is what motivated him, and to be honest, he couldn't care what Rosenblatt looked like.
So glad we were able to get some Rosenblatt "dirt".

The Royals (they are called something else now that slips my mind) built a new stadium that just hosted their first game last week...in south Omaha. Also supposed to be very nice.

Do check out Boystown...that's by my old stomping grounds. Old Market, near the new CWS park, has a great steakhouse (Omaha Prime)...very pricey but great. Make sure you pick up a Runza while you're there...great fast food.
