My 16 year old is 6'1" and still growing. He has always had big feet and big hands with abnormal finger length. Both mom and I are 5'7" (with an ego). Both grandpa's were 6'2". He has two uncles that are 6'1" and 6'3". He is either a mutant or got the resessive genes. We also have a 19 YO that is 5'11". It could be the sleep thing???

My wife is 5'5 I'm 6' on a good day, my 18yr old son is 6'5 and the tallest on both families genetic trees. He was so proud when he passed me up in 8th grade. He razed me for some time with his mothers support and then one day seriously asked why he was so much taller than the rest of the family. In a straight face and somber tone I told him to go talk to his mother because she has something to tell him. His jaw dropped, my wife was speechless, and I enjoyed every minute of the uncomfortable silence.
It's called "atavism", guys. This occurs when a person exhibits a characteristic, such as height, that is not found in a close relative, but may be found in a distant, very distant, ancestor. Since many of us don't always know who our distant ancestors are or how tall they might have been or how they looked, we will rarely be able to predict, with any sense of accuracy, how tall, what color hair, or even what skin tone our children will have. So we just continue to do the best we can with whatever and however our children turn out to be.
Catfish,

That's one way to explain it away. biglaugh

I'm 6' (if anyone's recruiting me) otherwise I'm 5'8". Wife's 5'7". Oldest son is 6'1", youngest is 6'2". Wife's side, dad and brothers all over 6'. That's the reason I use. laugh

My dad was 5'2. ( Great Grandpa } ....Me, I reached 5'8. ( Grandpa }....My son is 5'11' ( Father ) All 3 to 6 inch shorter through high school. We all reached our growth height at about 20 yrs old. My sons two boys are soph 6'1 and senior 5'10 and growing. They play the positions they love the most. They just love the game. They did not choose them from the size they are. ( the taller one just happens to be a pitcher, and his brother a catcher.) I also have 2 more Grandsons that are either taller or going to be taller then their dads . One a junior is 6'2. I believe it is either the nutrition or the extra sleep. Both the 6'1 and 6'2 ( cousins ) sleep a lot and both drink a lot of milk.
I'm 5'8" and (ex)wife is 5'4". Sons are:
a) 23 yrs old-5'7" 150#
b) 19 yrs old-5'11" 190#
c) 14 yrs old-5'11 1/2" 160#

Genetics: My dad 5'11" - his parents: d-5'8", m-5'4"
my mom 5'1" - her parents: d-5'1" and m-5'2"

Ex-wife's parents: 5'8" and 5'4"
She had one uncle that was 6'3".

My 14 yr old just went to size 11 1/2 shoes, I'm a size 10. Judging by my other two and myself, we grew until we were 17, so he's got about 3 more years to grow probably.

Frankly, I think all kids on the whole are just getting bigger every generation.....And the girls just keep getting prettier.
My son (and dadchs24's) has size 15 feet. For those of you with 12 year olds in size 11...start subscribing to Eastbay now if you don't already. Because that's just about the only place you're going to be able to buy shoes for him. Roll Eyes

As for genetics and such...Dad's family are fairly short. My dad and brother are 6'1"...though my grandfather was only 5'7" or so. Our older son is just under 6 feet. If sleeping has anything to do with growth...our youngest is going to be 10 feet tall...LOL
I am 5' and hubby is 5'7. We are both shrimps. Jr. pats us on the head a lot from his 5'11", 200+ pound vantage point. He appears taller, too, than he is, because he's so broad and naturally muscular. My Dad was tall (6'), as were his brothers. And, oh, by the way, he WAS a milkman! Eek

Is this heaven?...
I'm 5'8" and my husband is around 6' (or so). Our 16 yr old is 6'3". He seems to need more sleep when he's in a growth spurt. Size 14 shoe(snow shoes).(He's always been in the 95% in age group for size).
He eats like a horse (or would eat a horse if it wandered into the kitchen). Winter he seems to gain weight, because he's working out and eating. Hovering between 215-217lbs.
Don't know if he'll grow more, but he shaves because then he can say ,"I shave, Roll Eyes" not because he needs to.
By the way, my husband refuses to admit that kid is taller. Even stands on his tip toes. Sad isn't it? Frown
Found a website with some information on this topic (see below) and some ways to calculate, here is the way they suggest:

quote:
The projected ultimate height for a boy equals the father's height plus the mother's height plus 13 then divide by 2.

Using that theory I come up with

Dad's height 5'9.5" (69.5 inches)
Mom's height 5'4.5" (64.5)

add together 134 plus 13 equals 147 divide by 2 equals: 6'1".

Right now he is 15 and 5'9" and a size 11.5 shoe. Just hope he is "healthy" at whatever height he ends up.

I don't place any value in even a Doctor's opinion in this issue:

Case in point...when my younger (notice I didn't say little) brother was born, the docs said he would be lucky to be 5'5". (Mom is 5'2", Dad is 6') Long story short...he is 6'2", 210 lbs, 9% body fat.

I hope the docs are right about my son, though. Wife is 5'11", I am 5'11". Docs said 6'3"ish.
Hey Redbird5:
I think there are always variables with all charts and graphs. But looking at your stats RedBird 5 and your little brother I came up with 6'1" using the method I posted above.

For your son using the method it came out to be 6'3", very interesting.

Now, they did say on the post this is only for boys there is a different factoring for girls and of course there are also a lot of "if, thens, whatever's, nutrition issues, health issues" as well.

But kinda fun to play with the numbers, and when all is said and done, it is just a "numbers game" and only time/age will be the true indicator.
I dont put a lot of faith in formulas. There is an old saying "you dont know whose blood is flowing through your veins" . Clearly meaning you don't know what genetic combination you will get.

I am 5'7", wife is 5'7"........son was 12 lbs at birth and 22 inches long.....now at 17 he is 6'1" 185.......he won the genetic lottery in regards to our gene pool.
When my son entered the 7th grade he was 5 feet tall and weigh 90 lbs. When he graduted 8 th grade he was 5.8. Today as a sr. in high school he is 6.1. I don't know if he is finished growing are not. A friend of mine who is a dr. told me the horomone that causes facial hair growth also stops bone growth. Once a young man has to shave on a daily or almost daily bases he has pretty much stopped growing. Ofcourse they're always exceptions. I am 5.6 feet and my husband is 5.10. How ever my father is 6 foot and the shortest of his 4 brothers. I also have a 15 year old son who is 5.9 and has more facial hair than his older brother. You just never know.
