Ok, the Tigers have the superior pitching. But Reyes (who?) lasted into the ninth. Reyes, a rookie with the worst record to pitch in a WS game.

On the night, he was the better pitcher. That's all that counts.

The Cards did outhit the Tigers, but the Tigers' defenseive lapses made a major contribution to the one-sided score. That is one area where I'd always call the NL superior.

Tonight we had the Young Rookies. Tomorrow night we have the Old Reclamation Projects. Gotta love this game!

Go Cards!
USA Today's prediction was "Detroit in 3; OK, make that 4", and went on to say their biggest obstacle to winning the WS would be "to keep a straight face".

And how many of you noticed the promo for American Idol during the game that included a World Series Scorecard labeled......Tigers vs Mets?

Add the usual spew from ESPN, and the Birds will have no dearth of bulletin board material!
I don't think the WS is any different than any other game or sporting events. People lay odds on the outcomes. I'm used to my teams being on both sides of the coin with UK basketball (typically the "w" pick) to UK football (almost always the underdog and correctly so!).

We all like to make our predictions, including the media. If I'd put money on the WS, I would have easily bet the Tigers.... not probably in four though! Detroit has played amazing ball this year and I can understand the predictions. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the Cards! Frown

Hoping that Detroit picks it back up though!! Wink

Anybody wonder why they even bother playing the games when on "paper" the Tigers should be up 3-0 right now

I think they mean Tigers in SEVEN. Gonna party like it's 1968.

Shame they played such solid D through the playoffs just to have their pitchers (and has it been all bullpen pitchers?) rack up the E's.

Verlander made one error on a pickoff attempt.
Zumaya made an error out of the pen that gave the Cards runs. However, the Cards were up by 2 at the time and Carp was dealing.

Rodney's error last night was pivotal --- but with his chest-thumping after coming in and striking out our two weakest links in the lineup (what WAS TLR thinking sending Rodriguez up there?), I regarded that as kismet.

Speaking of which, the ghost of Curt Flood tripping up Granderson to reverse the '68 game ---- THAT was kismet (the good kind). And kind of eerie.

Weather could be blamed for the OF miscues last night by the Tigers, although they were playing in the same OF the Cards used. Misjudgement would be more to the point.

We're in an era where the AL is outstipping the NL in pitching and hitting; but I don't think there's ever been a time when the NL has lagged behind in Defense.
Leyland has always been class ---- deserves a long and successful run managing. The lack of execution must have eaten him up, but he took it on himself.

Hooray for the Tigers, overcoming the same kind of late-season slump we did to beat the team the "experts" had getting fitted for 2006 WS rings at Spring Training.

But traditional Cardinal Style baseball won in the end. The Gashouse Gang and Jack Buck are having quite a party tonight!

Cards have no chance. Worst hitting team that I've seen in the post season.

Don't pitch to Pujols and they won't score.

I hope the "advance scouts" were watching and taking notes.

Go Tigers...make the Central Division and the AL proud!

Glad the Cardinals decided to show up and play these games despite the underdog role and the national predictions of the Tigers winning it in 3. Ok, so that was mean of me but I just couldn't wait. LOL! Again, that is why I love the game so much. Take all of your stats, your feeling of superiority, your previous schedule and throw it out the door. What players do on the field is seldom predictable. Beenthere, just having a little fun at your expense. crazy Big Grin

CoachB25 - congrats to the Cardinals - you deserve to crow - or whatever chirping sounds Cardinals do Smile

I must "humbly" point out that I predicted Cardinals in 4 earlier in this thread and it appears that my predictions were closer than any other prognostications that have been espoused on this site or anywhere else for that matter

..........Mr. Humbly..........

"I must "humbly" point out that I predicted Cardinals in 4 earlier in this thread and it appears that my predictions were closer than any other prognostications that have been espoused on this site or anywhere else for that matter." Mr. Humbly said from his comfortable Cleveland home last night after the St.Louis Cardinals claimed the 2006 World Championship.

Woody - I always enjoy your take Smile

BTW, given that I sometimes use sarcasim or satire in my writing, please don't read too much into that Go White Sox stuff Smile

Finally, it is hard being right sometimes and often very lonely. Notice not one soul chimed in to support my Cardinals in 4 prediction. Thus, from the Bobby Vinton classic just call me:

quote:
Lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
I have nobody for my own
I am so lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
Wish I had someone to call on the phone

Now I'm a soldier, a lonely soldier
Away from home through no wish of my own
That's why I'm lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
I wish that I could go back home

Letters, never a letter
I get no letters I the mail
I've been forgotten, yes, forgotten
Oh how I wonder, how is it I failed

Now I'm a soldier, a lonely soldier
Away from home through no wish of my own
That's why I'm lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
I wish that I could go back home

I can always dream!

Lonely? You think you're lonely?

Try Gate 41 (get it? Four to one) at Detroit Wayne County International Airport...in the Berry Terminal for charter flights.
I hear that the Tigers, perhaps, will be arriving there sometime...

"Where is everyone?"
