Yes!! Great things!
Son is loving it! New field is opening in April. Until Turchin opens, the Green Wave play @ Zephyer.
They had a great recruiting class of incoming freshmen, and a couple high caliber transfers for this season. 2008 committs are strong, too. Rick Jones was "Coach of the Year", 2005. Mark Kingston is terrific assistant & recruiting coach.
www.yogwf.com is the "official Tulane" message board...visit http://tulanegreenwave.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/013007aaa.html for a story on the upcoming season.
Follow this link to the Alumni Game...Micah Owings, 2006 Ariz. Diamondbacks Minor League Player of the Year, along with several other Tulane-Pro players are to be playing...

Tulane has recovered pretty well from Katrina...just opened a new Student Center, renovations to other areas are ongoing, academic programs are again expanding. Admissions criteria are strong, but I am very thankful that first year athletes have a mandatory 8 hour per week study hall. Academic support is a priority, coaches really want the players to succeed. Usually they have a couple Academic All-Americans on the team. If you look over the roster, you'll find a player from from Conn...
Recruiting classes are 6-10-12.
Feel free to pm or email...I'll be glad to help you anyway I can.

My sons friend from HS and cape teammate, Warren McFaddon plays at Tulane. Son also got a chance to play this summer with some of the Tulane guys, Shooter Hunt just transfered from UVA.

My son said he got the impression the team was very close, like his, and that says a lot for a program!

The program and the players recovered well from Katrina. I suppose if you can do that, you can do just about anything!

TR, What do you base your opinion on? Have you actually been there? Since Katrina?

Texan is correct. I've been there. It is BAD! REALLY BAD! They called BACK the National Guard to patrol. I'm going back in May...strapped. Almost the entire professional community has fled. The health care system is in shambles. If you go, don't get sick. NOLA was always a tough, nasty town. It is a mess now.

We went to an information session in NYC a few months ago sponsored by Tulane. They spent the first hour talking about the recovery and about how 95% of the students who had gone to other schools after Katrina had returned to Tulane and how safe it is now!
Of course this has to be their PR. We have not visited yet, but my son is very interested.
I would think the students are not near where all of the problems are? yes, no?

The dangerous parts of Houston & LA are confined to pretty specific areas. Not so true in NO.

I wouldn't send my kid to NO, NYC or Detroit. Probably couldn't get him to go to Chicago.

I'm sure the campus is relatively safe, with well-behaved college students and armed security. The rest of the town is literally a disaster area populated by criminals being chased by crooked incompetent cops, imo. You need to speak with baseballmom. Mrs. Claiborne can fill you in on her sons first hand experience, which hopefully is, and remains, extremely positive. Tulane is recovering. However, NOLA is not a normal college town, where a kid can stumble around at night feeling safe. It is a bad place, simply put in my opinion.

Wow. Thank you for your opinions. I have emailed Mrs. Claiborne. I am very anxious to hear from her about her son's experience.
Tulane officials make it sound as though the students are very safe. We are used to New York and the "big city" and have no real fears about it. You learn to be safe, protect yourself etc. We are not coming from small town experience with those concerns.
This sounds like an entirely different thing.
A little ( a lot) scary.
NYC, Chicago, LA, Houston are big cities with the majority of the city relatively safe and "bad parts" well defined. NO was never a big city like those others. It now has about 200,000 people, down from over a half million within an economic depression by definition, with crime, lack of shelter and basic medical care the biggest probems.

No denying there are crime & corruption issues in the city, just like Houston or Dallas, Chicago, NYC, LA, Miami, etc. Trinity Univ., U. of Houston & Rice all "border" some not so great/dangerous areas of San Antonio & Houston...
Tulane is located in the Garden District(actually adjacent to Audubon & Loyola Univ.)...somewhat similar to Olmos Park (San Antonio), Memorial (Houston), etc...
Freshmen aren't allowed to have cars. Tulane has implemented several transportation plans, just like others campuses.
Ocshner Hospital is within 3-4 miles of campus & yes, there is GREAT health care there & @ Tulane Hospital. There are health care facilities on campus, too.

What I personally do not like is the city at large...the French Quarter, the casinos, Mardi Gras...it's kind of like "Las Vegas of the South"...or so it seems.

But, those things have nothing to do with the University. Son is too busy with classes & baseball to do much "running around". He understands where he is & why he's there. So, I'm not as worried as I once was. A little common sense, heeding the advice of upperclassmen, he's been fine thus far. As with any frosh, it's an eye opening experience. The Team is very close & supportive.

Turchin field was in the process of being renovated prior to Katrina. But, that was washed down the Mississippi, so to speak. So, they started over! Turchin II will be ready in April. Until then, the team plays @ Zephyr. http://tulanegreenwave.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/063006aaa.html
