can you hit the yellow cage balls from a machine with wood bats or will the bat break?

A good wood bat shouldn't break if you hit the ball on the "sweet spot". However if you hit it off the handle, then yes the yellow ball can break it (just as a regular baseball).
they cage balls seem heavier tho so will it break easier
they shouldn't be heavier; the density should be comparable to a regulation baseball.
I've hit with wood bats against the yellow balls in the past and did break a few, but I think a hardball would have broken them just the same, due to where on the bat the ball was hit.
Unless you're using a really cheap bat, a yellow ball should not break the bat when impacted on the sweet spot.
I always taped up my practice woods, from the trademark to an inch before the end of the barrel, to keep the bat from getting marked up and to provide a little extra strength.

ok well I just got a new bat and didnt want to go out and break it right away so I think Ill tape it to add a little extra strength

I own cages with the yellow balls and have seen many broken wood bats including those used by my son. If you tape it it may help but will probably still break below the tape in the handle area.
No difference between hitting cage balls or baseballs as far as wood is concerned.
