So my son texts me tonight that he hit a hr in scrimmage and is announced as saturday starting pitcher in two weeks when season opens.

He was recruited as ss but has moved into pitching role this year as a soph. I hope to see some games but whatever, I'm very happy for the experience he will have and the friendships he has made.

It's a special time in his life. Best wishes to all this spring.
igball,

Congrats, that is fantastic! I'm going to take a logical leap here that (connecting the dots) the coach will let him hit (hit HR in scrimmage) for himself as a weekend starting pitcher? If so that is a rarity in D1 baseball nevermind your son's conference. He must be a tremendous athlete to make that transition.

PS...Welcome to the dark side (pitching) Wink. BTW - I really like the "5 things video" that the school did in their Bios. That is cool stuff.

Regarding the College Spring Season.....

A big "duh-huh" in my direction.....I can't believe I haven't seen this before. Possibly due to the accelerated aging process between my ears. I just noticed on Boyds World (great site!) that they have the college schedules prepped in an iCalendar format for Apple and Outlook calendaring It is posted under 2012 Pre-season material. One example of computers making our life easier if you're smart enough to take the time to read what is in front of you. This is such a helpful thing to have so you don't have to manually enter each game.

In addition to Boyds, I frequent www.d1baseball.com which is a great resource too if you want to know who is playing who on a particular or get the results.

Yesterday, I saw my oldest son play his first college game. My wife kept reminding me to calm down..."It will be a long season. Don't get too excited"! (He is a freshmen shortstop hitting in the two hole.) First at bat, he pops up a bunt for an out! That brought me down to earth. Second at bat he grounds out to the right side on a hit and run. I decided to put the video camera down. Maybe I was jinxing him? Third at bat, he gets a bloop double down the right field line. "Yes! Maybe now the pressure will be off him since he has his first college hit out of the way", I tell my wife. She says, "Whose feeling the pressure? Him or YOU"? Alright, admittedly, she may be on to something. Afterall, I did feel a lot calmer now that he got his first hit. Fourth at bat, he hits a hard ground ball and reaches on an error. Dad's feeling pretting good. Until the 9th inning...With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, the other team loads the bases looking for a double play situation. Guess who is up? That's right. Now Dad is feeling the pressure again. I decide to take a walk so I could remove some of the nervous energy. I found a place where I have a good view of his at bat. Now, please understand, I do have confidence and faith in my son's ability. I really do. But, like me, I think most of the dads on this site would be biting their nails if their freshmen son was in this situation. First pitch is a strike. The next two are outside. What happened next? Well, the headlines read, "_______ Hits Walk Off to put __________ in Win Column on Opening Day". No, it wasn't a homerun, but it was a nice hit to left field that got the job done. It is a memory that can never be taken away from me and that is the great thing about baseball. The game is full of great memories for me. The best part of the story is...my wife picked up the video camera and captured it all on film! I LOVE my wife!
Great story! Congrats on surviving your sons 1st game of college baseball. Nothing better than those memories. I think as parents we share their passion and excitement more than the average parent because it took so much teamwork to get them to that college team.

Hope they have a great season and that you and your wife get to be there for most of the games.

Yes, you're story very much reminds me of the first collegiate baseball game my son played as a freshman starter. It was the first game of the season and I was nervously anxious to see him perform well. First AB he K'd swinging at a very good curve ball low and a little away and my heart sank. I vividly remember him walking back to the dugout with a grin on his face and shook his head a little bit like he couldn't believe he was fooled like that. He's a patient hitter and so rarely strikes out or gets fooled, but then. . .we're talking about good D1 pitching now. Next AB he draws a walk, steals a base and later scores. Now I'm feeling a little better. Next AB he leads off the inning and hits a nice single to the opposite field. Now I'm really feeling much better. Next AB he draws another walk. It's all good now. And his last AB he flies out. Defensively, he played SS and had 6 put outs/assists to include a pickoff play and had the only team error, a throwing error that shouldn't have been if the 1B had picked it as one might expect. The game ends as a win for us and my son is 1 for 3 with 2 walks, a stolen base and a run. . . .a very satisfying day for my son's Dad and Mom, as it was for him too.

Funny though, I was just about as anxious at the next game. Sometime later in the season that all went away. But I don't remember when. I guess it went away slowly.

I duhknow, but I think when your son is a Freshman starting player it's makes you more anxious than otherwise. . . huh???

Now he's a sophomore and I await to see his first game this season, which starts the weekend after next. And while I now have a lot more confidence due to his experience last year, I'm still anxious. But the anxiousness is different from last time.

Well after one rain delay Jr got in his first college game in on Sunday. We watched on the Internet video feed as we decided ahead of time to go next weekend so we could get in 6 games, I kept second guessing myself all week in our decision to not go this weekend, but in the end it worked out since the weather was not great and Sat’s games were cancelled. They got in two wet games yesterday.

I have been told his coach knows how to carefully bring along promising freshmen and he did just that with Jr (and another pitcher). He let him watch his first game on the bench and started him in the two hole ahead of a three mashers. He rewarded the coach with his confidence and went 2 for 3 and scored twice. (in Springer speak he had 3 QAB’s) The first inning he hit a shot between SS and 3rd, and then scored from 1st on a double in the gap. I thought, well now college baseball is not that difficult after all. Razz The team got up by 7-8 and he pulled him and put some other kids in. His good friend, a fresh pitcher, also got in two innings of solid work with 3 K’s so overall it was a good weekend for the TU team and a couple of wide eyed freshmen.

Checked in last night for game results, good stuff!

Unbelieveable!!! Twoseamer Jr had his first walkoff hit today! High drive to left off the wall with runners on first and second. Teamates mobbed him out at 2nd base. Sitting here with misty eyes typing. Can't see how it gets any better than this! just had to share.

Glad you shared as these are special memories! Keep posting.
Thanks for sharing Two Seamer!! Is he a pitcher too, or does he just mash two seam fastballs?

I have lukewarm good news regarding son getting off the DL - he was released on Monday to throw and swing the bat in practice. The next step is catching in practice and then on to game ready, fingers crossed it will all happen over the next week and a half so he can make the third series of the season.

It's a marathon, not a sprint...it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Pretty good start.
Mike Mercurio, who set a school single-game record for most runs batted in by a leadoff batter, has been named Conference Carolinas Baseball Player of the Week. Mercurio helped lead Mount Olive to a season-opening three-game sweep over Lenoir-Rhyne, which vaulted the Trojans to the No. 1 spot in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30 Poll.

Mercurio, a shortstop from Brewster, N.Y., went 4-for-6 with seven rbi's in Mount Olive's 16-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in the final game of the series. After an rbi-single and a two-run single, Mercurio belted a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth.

In the series opener, Mercurio went 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and one rbi as Mount Olive rallied from a three-run deficit for a 9-5 win. He also scored two runs and drove in a run to help the Trojans rally from a 4-0 deficit for a 7-6 victory in the second game.

Mercurio was 8-for-12 in the series and was also 4-for-4 in stolen bases. He compiled a .714 on-base percentage, reaching base 10 times in 14 plate appearances, including all five plate appearances in the series opener.

Mount Olive puts its No. 1 ranking on the line this weekend on the road as the Trojans travel to Wingate, N.C., for a three-game non-conference series against Wingate. The Trojans defeated the Bulldogs 6-0 in the first round of last year's NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Scarborough Field. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m., then finish the series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

Do you have your Spitz ready?

You Bet...Spitz are mandatory in our household! Wink

I'm in the same boat with the second guessing, BOF. I'm wondering why I'm not making the trip this weekend when he'll appear in an intrasquad scrimmage and why I am making the trip the following weekend for the opening series when there's a good chance he won't pitch at all.

Spitz Big Grin

Rhodes started off their season 1-0 with a win over crosstown school Lemoyne-Owen, 13-1. Despite the way it ended, L-O played us closely (and even led) for 5 innings before more or less running out of pitching depth. While we're happy to have finished strong, we learned a lot in the first part of the game and we're preparing to see tougher opponents this weekend: Mississippi College and Huntingdon College.

Unfortunately, I will not be going on the trip. After two weeks of complete rest and rehab, I was able to begin throwing yesterday. Arm felt literally indistinguishable from the day I had to hang it up. Trainer doesn't think it is a "large" labrum injury, but says there is at least a small tear. This may or may not be fixed by further rehab. We are continuing rehabilitation/strengthening but I'm also going to see an orthopedist in the next few days and we'll see if he thinks I need an MRI...we think I will.

He told me if I were a potential 5 year student (Rhodes only offers one master's, accounting), he'd start preparing me for a redshirt at this point. Since I will not be at Rhodes for 5 years, we're going to proceed in hoping that I can be comfortable throwing again by the end of season.

Both my immediate and long term baseball future hang on the word I get from the orthopedist, so I'll update then.
JPontiac,

I second BOF's statement, best of luck in your recovery. I hope you're back on the field soon!

I am headed to my son's scrimmage later this afternoon for his evening scrimmage under the lights. They're one week out from the first game of the season, and I'm still optimistic that he'll contribute to the team...whether it's as a cheer-leader, stat-keeper, or on the field...I'm just excited to watch some college ball.

Thanks, CaBB! We are splitting time between our highschool seniors games and my college freshmen's games. I am hoping to see 1/2 the college games if possible. Tough to make many of the road games. Next year I hope to travel to them all.

How cool, you've got the best of both worlds! Have fun and LOL..

Next week is opening weekend for many. Wake Forest travels to New Mexico State for their first games. In addition to Kevin Jordan likely starting after receiving a kidney from Tom Walter, the game will also mark the return of Walters to NMSU. The school housed his New Orleans team after Katrina and allowed his team tuition free education while they were they.

The article below describes that ordeal.

That's a great story I remember that ordeal. Cool, we have WF and NMS parents here!
