With just one true starter back, the King George baseball team figured to be in a transition mode under coach Thad Reviello this season.

But so far, the new-look Foxes have been on a roll, grinding out eight victories in their first nine games. Tuesday night’s 6–2 win over visiting Spotsylvania was their sixth straight.

“We’re finding a way to win,” Reviello said after watching his team take control early against the Knights with three runs in the bottom of the first. “I knew this season we were going to be green, but I thought these kids would have some grit, and so far they have.”

The Foxes may be green in terms of their starting varsity experience, but but many of them have played together for years, and that chemistry has shown in their 8–1 start.

“I knew we had the ability to be good if we hit,” said third baseman Will Clift, who drove in King George’s first two runs with a double to left field. “As a team, we’ve been pretty clutch with our hitting.”

The clutch hitting was an important factor in their win over the Knights (2–8). The early lead gave Foxes starting pitcher Drew Berry the lift he needed to handcuff the Knights on just three hits through six innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked three.

“I got in kind of a groove near the end of the game,” said Berry, the team’s only returning starter from last year’s 14–6 squad. “We’ve been hitting the ball really well lately and we’re playing together as a team.”

Luke Barnum reached on an infield hit to start the Foxes’ early run production. After Berry roped a single up the middle, Clift’s long drive off the bottom of the left-field fence plated both runners. Clift then scored on a grounder by Austin Halter.

Their lead appeared pretty secure until the top of the third, when Spotsylvania made some noise of its own after loading the bases and scoring a pair of runs.

After Dante Fairchild led off the inning with a walk and leadoff hitter Dylan Luttrell singled to right, Knights pitcher Nick Smith helped his own cause with a bunt to load the bases.

Fairchild then scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Daniel Brooks, and Luttrell came home on Garrett Johnson’s drive to right field.

With their lead trimmed to 3–2, the Foxes showed their mettle, though. While Berry and reliever Rudy Morrow were shutting down the Knights at the plate, King George’s offense produced three more runs.

Morrow doubled and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the fourth after a passed ball. In the fifth, the Foxes sealed their victory with RBI hits by Halter and Jacob Sivak.

“We made some critical errors that took the wind out of our sails,” Spotsylvania coach Ryan Davenport said. “We have some big conference games coming up and we have to eliminate those.”

The Knights entertain Brentsville on Friday in a Conference 22 matchup. King George hosts Eastern View in a key Conference 22 clash on Thursday.

I have to admit I'm a bit surprised how well KG has done so far.  Conversely, it's puzzling how EV is sort of stumbling.  Fauquier is more or less where I expected them to be.  I figured Courtland and Chancellor would be mid-pack, but we can see how that turned out.

Of course, there are still 10 or so games to play and things are bound to change.

I may try to get to the EV @ KG game tonight.

I am also impressed with KG this early season, EV stumbling was a result of injuries, sickness and youth, Im surprised chancellor is struggling as much as they are. Foxdad i think you are right there is alot of baseball left, but reality is i guess with no automatic bid for the reg. season champ the tourney means everything and i guess it can be anyones game. I think it is a shame that you can go the entire regular season undefeated and not get a bid to regionals.

King George has been impressive, also lately Liberty has gotten hot. Seems Liberty is getting pitching with some timely hitting and doing very well as of late. Fauquier is Fauquier, doing what they need to, to continue to win baseball games, feels as though they have already locked up the #1 seed on the conference tournament. Eastern View and Chancellor, the two teams from last years conference championship game, have definitely struggled. Eastern View has been bitten a bit by the injure bug I believe and has had to replace quite a bit from the 2014 Conference Championship team. Chancellor I just can't put my finger on with what's wrong. On paper, they seem like they should be a decent team, yet talking to some of their fans and parents, they start upwards of 4-6 sophomores in any given game, so I am not sure what is going on there. Courtland seems like a dangerous team, may not have all the pitching or hitting in the world, but they have smart kids and play tough. It would not surprise me to see Courtland knock off someone in the 1st round of the playoffs.

When the playoffs roll around, it is Fauquier's to lose. They should be the #1 seed and I believe will be in the regional (because they will be in Conference Championship Game) the second regional spot to me comes from either Liberty or King George with Courtland being a possibility as well. Eastern View and Chancellor seem like extreme long shots. But there is still a ton of baseball to be played most teams have 4 or 5 Conference games left, so this all could change in a week.

Tonight's Conference 22 Schedule:

Liberty @ Chancellor    6:00pm

Fauquier @ Courtland   7:30pm

Good luck to all teams

I was commenting last night to AJ Stead's Dad that it's not like the "old" days of the Battlefield District where every district game was important as only 4 teams (out of 8) would advance to the district tournament and the regular season champ had an automatic bid to regionals.  Now the regular season just sets the seeding for the conference tournament.

Conversely, a team could enter the tournament with a poor record and win the conference or place high enough to advance.  Highly unlikely, but it "could" happen.

I think last night's EV/KG game is a real example of how unsettled this conference is with the exception of Fauquier.  Anybody can beat anyone else.  It is going to boil down to who is playing the most consistent and best baseball at the end of the season.  I look for FHS to finish 1st but lose one or two...with a real log jam for 2nd place and beyond.
