I agree that this series will probably  be one of the best we have seen in years. This is great for the game. Two teams waiting a long time to make appearances, two awesome managers who get the best from their players.

Lots of good stories, two I love:  one is about our hometown boy Anthony Rizzo who battled cancer and the other about first round pic, Andrew Miller who struggled for years on the mound.

I am a die hard NL fan who thinks the Cubs GM is a genius...go Cubbies.

The game was exciting, the place was hopping. Glad I was there to witness history with my son!  I'll always cherish our spur of the moment road trip. 30-45 minutes after the game and the stadium was still packed.  One entrance was closed after the game (My guess is that was where FOX Post Game w/ Pete Rose Frank Thomas and A-Roid were stationed. ), which made it really crowded as the streets were already swarmed with people watching the post game festivities (individuals climbing traffic light poles and perching on "don't walk" sign posts.

My two sisters both live in the Cleveland Area.. they are probably my third favorite team. But for this World Series.. it's Cubs go!

That is so hard to predict.  But I agree on two awesome managers.  Will be pulling for the Indians, b/c they are the underdogs.  Also, my brother-in-law played in college with Mike Sarbaugh, the Indians 3B coach.  Mike has gotten us field passes when the Indians come to town a couple times the last several years.  Super nice guy.

Going to be interesting to see what they do.

How about you put him in LF and Zobrist in RF and have them swap positions depending on whether a lefty or righty is up?  I've seen this done in Little League and thought it was a  horrible way to treat the weaker fielder but obviously that's not a concern here.

I think they'll probably use him as a PH.  You could do worse than to have that guy on the bench for a critical situation.

Put him at 3rd, Bryant in LF and Zobrist at 2nd. Baez to the bench

Kyle, we know you're really a catcher and left is sometimes an adventure. But since it's the World Series we would like you to try a position you've never played.

Schwarber's lateral movement is still in question. It's not just an ability to field question. It's a health question. I doubt he will play in the field.

I hear ya RJM. Sounds crazy I know.

Although for me, if he is healthy enough, and I know many will disagree, 3rd is the position with the least amount of responsibility. Surprised the Cubs haven't worked with him there.

You're probably right, he most likely will not play the field. Although if he does, my gut says it won't be catcher or in the outfield, so we'll see what Madden does

If Schwarber plays in the field I'm betting it's part of a late inning double switch after pinch hitting. But we're talking about a knee injury serious enough to miss the season. They don't want to risk his health and have him miss another season.

Yeah, when Chapman is coming in, he can take a lounge chair in left. RH hitters are not gonna hit pull side and LH hitters are not gonna hit any side.  And I'm a Tribe fan.

In other news, I had written the response that would have answered all of MKLWLSH's question and concerns about baseball, and life in general, but I didn't get submit quickly enough and got one of these.

are you kidding ? third base is certainly one of the toughest positions in mlb, the last decade the emphasis on third base defense only went up. even a healthy schwarber would be much too slow and unathletic to play third.

Cubs are to a large part so great because of their If defense, bryant, Russell , zobrist/baez and rizzo are all really good defenders that eat up ground balls.

schwarber at third would easily be worth minus 30 runs.

so what would the cubs gain from putting him on third when they have plus hitters everywhere that are plus defenders too?

him in LF is not ideal either but that is were he does the least damage.

schwarber is coming 10 years too late. 10 years ago when OBP and OPS were king he would have been a superstar but the days of put him somewhere if he can hit are kinda over, teams now pay for defense.

I think schwarber wont be a cub in two years, he is a really nice bat but wasting value by playing in the nl.

of course he still provides plus value and could still be a 4 WAR player but i can see theo trading him if someone is willing to overpay.

I can certainly see more value with him in the AL but I'm not buying "the days of put him somewhere if he can hit are kinda over, teams now play for defense".  There may be a slight move back in that direction on the pendulum but we still sit far on the side of hitting emphasis with SS and C being the occasional exceptions.   If you can mash, they'll put you in a corner somewhere.  I don't ever hear, "well this guy plays better defensive 1B or LF, so let's start him over the guy that hits 35 dings".  Heck, even at catcher, the Tribe had two great defensive catchers available but they still did everything they could to get Lucroy because he hits.

The Defensive MVP nominees for both leagues just came out.  Take away SS and C, look at the list of finalists and ask yourself if each player is known more as a hitter or defender.  IMO, almost all as hitter first.  And these are the BEST defenders!

Obviously, 3B is a stretch for Schwarber at this time but let's not forget the C background.  Some of those skill sets could play out well at 3B.

He was clearly a spark for the Cubs yesterday.  It will be interesting to see if his absence in the lineup has any affect on the team's psyche.

Cubs are not getting rid of Schwarber.  You do not trade a potential .280 plus, 35 - 45 HR, 120 plus RBI guy for anyone.  He will never win a gold glove but he's seriously not terrible in LF.  He will continue to work on it and get better.  I mean Adam Dunn played for 12 years in MLB as an OF.  If he was cleared by the doctors you can guarantee he would be in LF tomorrow night.

Totally agree with this entire post and will add that he will probably never play 3rd. If he ever moves to the infield, my guess is that it would be at first base.

there is still a market for power but pure power doesn't pay like it used to. guys like Chris Carter, Mark trumbo or this year Matt Kemp who hit 30+ bombs but offer little else don't get paid a lot anymore.

of course schwarber is younger than those guys and will have a better OBP and average but still clubs now look more that WAR than HR and RBI.

I think schwarber is the Cubs insurance in case an starting pitcher gets injured.

Im not sure dunn is a good example dunn actually had a season with negative WAR in a 400 HR, 900 OPS season. granted schwarber is not that bad in the field but he is still losing value there.

Hoping Schwarber plays tonight but understand Cubs have to protect their future.  I think he'll at least dh. Love this kid.

"Cubs general manager Theo Epstein chose to obliterate any of that suspense by following the medical staff’s advice and declaring that Schwarber will be limited to pinch-hitting duties during the games at Wrigley."

Isn't it amazing how loved by the fans David Ross is for a backup catcher who doesn't hit well? It was the same in Boston. He's a likeabke personality. When he becomes a manager I hope it where he has a shot to succeed.

Both teams are historical lovable losers. The Cubs just played it up more. For Red Sox fans it's a toss up choosing a team.

Lester is the stud the Red Sox screwed up and got away. They could have extended him before trading him in 2014 for five years at $120M. Instead they got David Overpriced for seven years at $210M. However, if Porcello remains a top starter it all works out. Lester was traded for Cespedes who was traded for Porcello.

Napoli was an everyday kind of guy hero in Boston. People still talk about his partying after the WS parade. There's support for bringing him back next year. He's a free agent.

The biggest support is for Terry Francona. He got screwed. Plus his private life ended up in the papers when things went wrong for the Sox.

No one in Boston gives a crap about Lackey. He's a jerk. He had his wife served divorce papers at the hospital while she was getting breast cancer treatment. I mentioned this to a former teammate of his. The response was, "Not surprised. He's an arse." Lackey didn't like Boston (the fan attention). Boston didn't like him.

Collapse? Cleveland is a really good team and they are playing well in all phases right now. Francona's not a bad skipper either.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Indians closed it out tonight and although it's a long shot, it wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs won three in a row. They have some good arms left and a lot of depth in that lineup.

Yes, Cleveland is a very good team and they are playing particularly well right now. But it's interesting, because while Chicago was the best team in baseball during the regular season, right now they are not.  The heart of the lineup is having just horrible at bats.  Defense is shaky.  Pitchers throwing too many mistakes.  I think they come back to win tonight but lose in Cleveland. Kluber has their number. That's baseball!

I couldn't believe what I was seeing from their fans.  They score a run in the first inning and naturally everyone is happy as they should be.  Cleveland comes back and scores the next inning and the silence and the long-faces in the crowd was astounding.  I've never seen anything like that before.  After Toronto was beaten, their fans stood and cheered for minutes after the game was over for their team.  The Cubs fans, at the first sign of trouble go into stun mode.  My only theory on this is every person in that ballpark must be so conditioned to losing, they must constantly be on the verge of waiting for the next shoe to drop.  I kind of feel sorry that they cannot enjoy the experience more than  they seem to be.

On the other hand, I get how the Cubs seem to be a good story but the Indians haven't won in 68 years.  The Cubs have more talent but the Indians have the better team right now.

I don't know about any of those Cubs fans you're referring to....  My stable of Cubs fans are excited to be at the World Series and are taking it one step at a time.  They believe in the team and they've been conditioned by Joe Maddon to take it easy, one step at a time.

Cleveland's pitching has been phenomenal along with a few quality AB's that have made a difference.

Tonight's another game, I like our chances.

Certainly the fans have ups and downs during the game.  But I think the camera man/production team was feeding us the narrative of "loser cubs fan" by their choice of what they put on air and when.  Don't fall for it.
