Tonight, in Marin County, CA., Gunnar is laying in a hospital bed. He has a portion of his skull removed. He is in an induced coma.
Gunnar is a pitcher for Marin Catholic HS who was struck in the head by a line drive.
Gunnar, his family, his teammates and his medical team need every positive thought and prayer you might provide.
Please make a portion of each day one where Gunnar Sandberg and his family are part of your thoughts and prayers.

That's heartbreaking. I hope he makes a complete recovery.

Doctors at the emergency room did CT scans and monitored Sandberg before determining he needed surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He underwent surgery Friday to remove a portion of his skull to allow for swelling of the brain without compression. He has been in a medically induced temporary coma since then.

Doctors say the surgery recovery and coma should last three to five days.

We will be praying for a swift and complete recovery for this young man . I'd also like you to pray for Tommy Toledo , pitcher for the Florida Gators who had the same thing happen to him Sunday against Georgia Southern . He is at home waiting for swelling to go down before surgery can be attempted . God Bless both young men , you are in our prayers .
Here is a link to an article about the accident:

Marin Catholic pitcher in induced coma after being hit in the head by line drive

Additionally, the school's AD has posted the following message on a local message board (with a note about how their next game was played):

quote:
On behalf of the Marin Catholic community I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support for the Sandberg family.

Quite a few people have asked for an update on his condition. There is essentially no change from the article in the Marin Independent Journal. Gunnar is in an induced coma and has had a portion of his skull (about the size of a dollar bill) removed to accommodate the swelling of his brain. According to his father, the induced coma is relatively common with this type of injury and allows Gunnar's body to rest comfortably while the swelling subsides. At this point the doctors have stated there is nothing we can do but wait for the swelling to go down. It could take a couple of days or a couple of weeks. Once the swelling does subside the doctors will slowly begin to bring Gunnar out of the induced coma.

On another note, Drake and Marin Catholic agreed to play today's game with wooden bats in support of Gunnar and his family. It was a great baseball game featuring what are arguably the two best pitchers in the league. The game ended (3-2) in the bottom of the 8th inning on a walk off homerun over the left field wall by MC's Tyler Scott.

Good luck to everyone this season.

Definately.

For them to do a craniectomy means he had some serious swelling on the brain. I read earlier that they induced a coma on him (this is done using a medication called pentobarbitol) to keep the swelling down.

If he survives this he is going to have a long, and I mean long road to recovery. There will be a lot of neuro rehab, a lot of work just getting him back to the mental status he was before he got hit.

My prayers are for him.
Below is a message emailed to families of Marin Catholic HS from its principal on the latest on Gunnar:

quote:
Dear MC Community:

You are probably aware by now that Gunnar Sandburg is in a doctor induced coma at Marin General Hospital after being hit by a baseball during a game last Thursday. Gunnar is in stable condition, and although there is no definitive prognosis, there is a sense of cautious optimism among the family that he will recover in time.

The Sandburg family has received a tremendous outpouring of support for which they have expressed heartfelt gratitude. They have requested that there be no visitors to the hospital at this time, but that could change as Gunnar progresses.

To read more about Gunnar's condition you can visit Gunnar Sandberg - My Story where Gunnar's sister, Kalli, is posting regularly. You can also post messages for the family there.

As a community of faith, we will continue to pray for Gunnar's speedy recovery.

Sincerely,
Chris Valdez
