I just listened to a local news report about Gunnar as I was driving to work and it was almost as if I was hit in the stomach.
The situation is quite difficult. According to the interview, Gunnar has had little to no brain wave activity for the past 2 or so days.
Please keep those prayers, thoughts and hopes coming for Gunnar. It you can spare a little extra, I know those extras will be meaningful.
Thanks to everyone. Gunnar and his family need all of us more than ever.
MarlinsMS,
I am very glad you escaped injury and are helping support Gunnar in his fight for life and a quality life.

Here is the latest update I found from Noon today:

"A Northern California high school baseball player is clinging to life after he was injured when a line drive hit his head during a practice game.

Sixteen-year-old Gunnar Sandberg remained in critical condition Tuesday at Marin General Hospital.

Officials at Marin Catholic High School, where Sandberg is a student, say he was removed from a medically induced coma on Friday and underwent a brain scan Monday after doctors didn't see progress."

More prayers and powerful thoughts from more HSBBW folks would sure be welcomed.
If you see a photo of Gunnar and read some about what he has been doing with his young life together with his love of baseball, you just cannot help but get involved for him. I read today that in addition to playing, he also coaches at a local grade school where the students and players love him.
Finally, one article suggested the hitter is having a tough time. If you have one left, a prayer for that young man would sure be nice.

There is an email late this afternoon that suggests Gunnar might be showing some signs of a turnaround for the better. Lets hope!

Upon receiving this news after a thrilling game against a rival, our son's HS team put their knees down and prayed as a group on the field for Gunnar. Just think if we added every HS team out there praying for this young man. I think it could help.

Keep praying!
The latest from the Marin Catholic principal (sent today at 3:56 pm):

The Sandberg Family has requested that we share the following:

"In an effort to dispel rumors and misinformation, we will be issuing official statements about Gunnar's condition on the CaringBridge website moving forward.

Gunnar remains in critical but stable condition in the ICU at Marin General Hospital.  There has been some positive activity yesterday and today, which is keeping us hopeful.  We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from the community.  Please continue to keep Gunnar in your thoughts and prayers.  We truly believe your unwavering support is giving Gunnar the strength he needs."

This young man and his family have been in my thoughts and prayers for some time now. As the father of a pitcher, this has always been at the back of my mind and it could be any one of us in this family's shoes right now. I keep checking this thread hoping, wishing and praying for some positive news for this young man and his family. I won't stop praying for them until that news comes. God be with you all.

MC principal: Sandberg family upbeat after brain scan
John Swartz
Posted: 03/23/2010 10:20:12 PM PDT

On the day Gunnar Sandberg's brain-scan results came in, the family was a little more positive, according to a Marin Catholic High official on Tuesday.

On his way back from Marin General Hospital, where the 16-year-old Kentfield baseball player remains in critical condition following a head injury caused by a line drive, Marin Catholic Principal Chris Valdez described his conversation with Sandberg's father as positive.

"Bjorn (Sandberg) said he got more smiles today," Valdez said. "There's a long road ahead and the doctors are cautious, but they have less despair today. (The Sandbergs) didn't offer an specifics about what's medically going on É but they were much more upbeat. He said they feel a little bit better, but (the family) is still asking for prayers and good thoughts."

Sandberg had an EEG brain scan on Monday. A common use for such scans is to measure the electrical activity in the brain, and is often used on coma patients.

Joy Geraldi and Walter Traver, the parents of two of Sandberg's Marin Catholic teammates, assisted the family in opening a custodial account at the Bank of Marin. The account, named Gunnar Sandberg Fund, has the purpose of helping the Sandberg family with the financial side of Gunnar's hospital care and rehabilitation.

Donations can be made at a Bank of Marin branch; the account number is 15-101868.
Continued best thoughts and prayers for Gunnar and the Sandberg family.

Earlier today, a California legislator introduced legislation to outlaw the use of metal bats in high school (and I believe college too, if I'm not mistaken) baseball in California. We could be one short year away from using nothing except wood in California, at least for high school on up.

In even more recent news, the league is going all wood for the rest of the year:

Player's head injury prompts Marin County Athletic League to ban metal bats for rest of the season

The Marin County Athletic League voted unanimously Thursday to ban nonwooden bats for the remainder of this baseball season in the wake of a critical head injury to a Marin Catholic High pitcher struck with a ball off a metal bat. The Bay Counties League also has decided on a similar ban.
The board also voted to forward a recommendation to the North Coast Section board of managers and vowed to look deeper into head protection for pitchers.
The use of metal bats has come under scrutiny in the county after the March 11 head injury of Marin Catholic pitcher Gunnar Sandberg, a 16-year-old Kentfield resident who remains in a coma at Marin General Hospital. His condition was stable Thursday and the family remained hopeful, said Marin Catholic principal Chris Valdez.
Valdez said 796 wooden bats have been donated in the past two weeks, enough so that every school in the league will be supplied 50 to 60 bats. Marin Catholic athletic director Rick Winter said the number of bats will probably exceed 1,000, with donations from private parties, the Giants, A's and other clubs.

There was a very touching moment of silence for Gunnar before the Stanford/USC baseball game.
Something about Gunnar and his family is so very meaningful. It sounds like Gunnar is still in a coma.
Some fund raising for him has started.
I will get information about it and post so anyone wanting to help this very brave family can do so.
Prayers are still needed...as many as you can spare.
Latest update from Gunnar's sister's blog:

--------------------

I am now updating from San Luis Obispo for the week. Of course I leave Marin today and Gunnar decides to show off. He has made some neurological improvements, and today he was breathing on his own without the machine for a few hours. Slowly Gunnar is coming back, and I hope that I dont miss anything to exciting while I am gone. He is being such a fighter and its so good to see my brother doing better. Thank you to Ruedi & Matthias Keller who stopped by the hospital today to visit with my brother. I know that he enjoyed it and my whole family really appreciated the thoughtful gesture. Its great to see the boys so soon after the accident doing so amazingly well! Keep sending great thoughts and prayers, they seem to be working quite well..and of course the medical team has a little to do with it. Keep thinking positive this week! -Kalli
