Crestwood, IL - Notre Dame and Providence battled in an 8 inning thriller at Standard Bank Ball Park in the South Side Conference Challenge.

The Dons spotted the Celtics 3 runs in the top half of the 1st, but came back and answered with 2 (runs) of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

That trend continued throughout the day as the two schools traded runs throughout the game.

Danny Hyde had a spectacular individual performance going 3-3 at the plate with a 2B and 4 RBI and also was stellar on the mound pitching 3 scoreless innings striking out 7.

The Dons had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 7th. Trailing 6-5 heading into the final frame, Ryan Czachor and Matt Walsh started the inning with back to back singles, and Nick Pieruccini followed with a perfectly executed bunt base hit. The Providence pitcher threw the ball down the right field line allowing the tying run to score. After an intentional walk to Danny Hyde, Zach Ryan hit a one-hop rocket to the drawn in shortstop who started a 6-2-3 double play to halt the ND momentum. The Celtics ended the inning with a strike out, stranding 2 Dons in scoring position.

Providence scored 2 runs in the top of the 8th which proved to be the eventual winning runs.

Matt Walsh scored 3 of the 6 ND runs on the day. He was 1-2 with 2 BBs.

Walsh (2-4) and Pieruccini (2-4) each had huge 2-out doubles that counted for 5 of Notre Dame's 9 runs.

Senior shortstop Keenan Connelly scored 3 runs for the Dons.

Kevin Stahmer (2-3, HR, SB, 2 R) put the nail in the coffin when he hit a 4th inning opposite field bomb on a 3-1 pitch.
