What about Abe Alvarez, the crazy left from LBSU. He was my favorite pitcher to watch this year, with his fro and his hat, and his pitching, wow. Is outside appearance almost takes away from his incredible pitching ability. He changed armslots and it was quite impressive, his getup definitely help decive hitters. When you see someone looking like that on the mound, you have to think he doesn't know what he's doing, then you realize he does and it's too late.

Personally, I like it straight, but I can't seem to put it on straight, so it ends up a little crooked, or so my teammates say.
For many, many years I,too, wore a cap...this cap represented years of hard work in my chosen profession not unlke a baseball player...it designated which school I graduated from(as in which team you play for)...it offered repect to me from friends and family(same with a baseball player)..it instilled in others the confidence that I was well prepared to handle the job(as in a pitcher taking the mound)..plus it finished out the whole "uniform"...as in baseball
My profession is as a nurse...do you think if I entered a room with my "cap" to the side or backwards that a patient would ever have any trust or confidence in my skills...same with a baseball player...those that wear their caps askew are percieved as "jokers" and will always have to prove their skills in order to be taken seriously..I wore my cap with pride as it said to the world" I am a nurse...I worked long and hard to wear this cap on my head and I will not embarrass myself or my profession by making it a joke to have it on my head...so to all baseball players...wear your cap with pride and do not embarrass yourselves or your team by making it a joke to wear it

Hold on their catchermom, aren't you stereotyping these young men? After all college is where our youth's minds create and invent. I don't believe we should ever stifle their creativity. Would you condemn a player who wears his pants up/down? I don't think U of Texas coach runs an undisciplined program by any means.

When I saw them wearing their caps at the CWS I didn't think they were trying to disrespect the instituiton of baseball in anyway. Same as when I see the different ways that players wear their rally caps in the dugout.

If we want to find faults, look to the MLB and you'll find all the disrespect you can fathom. JMHO.

lol standing out is not the concern here, my response was a way (for me) to say, D*amn he doesnt give a C*rap, hit a ball to him..and he wouldnt care about gettin nailed in the chest to block the ball. And all third basemen's know that that is probably the #1 concern at 3rd is to block the ball and keep it in front of u just as any other position

I am all for ceativity(afterall I am a product of the 60's generation) but there are proper places to be creative and the baseball field is not one of them...you are there to do a job not to start a fashion trend...how about the cop who responds to your complaint of an assault coming with his hat turned sideways or backwards...just because he wants to be creative...or the general who leads his troops into combat with his hat on sideways or backwards...think that instills a lot of confidence in his men...but wait he was exhibiting his freedom of expression Eek.... a hat is part of the uniform...to be worn in a uniform fashion...as far as MLB goes there in my estimation very few who have opted to wear their hats askew...and furthermore, as far as scouts go, do you think for 1 minute they will recruit someone who is attempting to start a fad
And one other thought I would be willing to wager that most boys do not know enough to remove said hats in restaurants and Federal buildings...at my sons HS all hats were removed at the front door....no questions asked...shows respect

Respect the game...hmmm, game seems to imply a feeling of looseness, not meant to be uptight. IMO, the greatest respect you can show for a game is to have fun while playing it. I don't go around telling people to wear their hat off center or whatever, but it does give them a sense of looseness and, for lack of a real word, "fun-having". Does nobody else think that when they saw the players on Texas wearing their hats to a side, they looked relaxed, like they were really having fun? Having fun is how to respect a game (so long as no rules are broken) in my opinion.

We allow the kids to wear their hat the way that they want. However, those that wear their hats off to the side, backwards unless they are a catcher or with their bills turned upward are wearing those hats from behind the fence or in the stands. You wouldn't belive how important this is to me. Not only does it say something about the discipline of a team, it also says something about individuals trying to standout from their teammates in any other way than performance. JMHO! However, around here "My Humble Opinion" is all that matters. LOL

I apologize, I forgot I was on For Players only. I'll let this stand unless someone is upset and wants it removed.

Coach B

I am happy to hear your message.
My brother had a young kid make it up to the big club 2 years ago wearing his hat off to the side. He went up to him and adjusted the lid to fit squarely on his head and said:
"This is the way we wear our hats."
It was understood...the same way you make it understood.

First off, I would like to address the hat issue from a college perspective. Under no circumstances would my coach ever let us where a hat to the side, backwards, or ever a bit cockeyed to one side or the other. The game of baseball, like documented in many movies, is about honor, respect, the thought of the greats that played in the past. Would you ever see Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Nolan Ryan, or any other player for that matter ever turn there hat to the side for any reason? I see it more of a fashion statement. I heard one poster say, "I think it's cool that the kid from Long Beach has a fro and cocks his hat to one side." How is that cool? The fro doesn't make you **** your hat to one side or the other. One of the greatest baseball players, EVER, in Ozzie Smith started his career with a fro and I never, not once, saw his hat cocked to one side or the other, not even if the sun is in his eyes. They make sunglasses for that sort of thing.

I really find it disturbing that some people can actually agree with wearing the hat to one side. I ecspecially hate it done in the college and high school ranks. Other than certain individuals (not going to mention names because they aren't worth me mentioning) in the big leagues, 99% wear their hat the way it is supposed to be worn, letters/logo straight. Be proud of those that played the game before you and that will play after you. So many people these days, including myself, wear hats in so many different styles. By no means am I saying that it is wrong, but when you step into that dugout where so many baseball icons have laced up and played there heart out, show them some respect. Wear the uniform the way it's supposed to be worn. Be proud of the fact that you are playing the best sport ever. Respect yourself, your family/friends, your coaches, your teammates, your oppponent, and lastly those that played before and after you.

Porkchop ... unless you are running a 6.2-6.3 60 yard, are hitting 400+ foot bombs regularly and/or throw 94+ accurately and consistently you have to learn to come across to college recruiters as a team player.

One of the major skills of a sucessful college recruiter is the ability to judge character. They don't want someone who may create friction on the team. There are too many skilled guys out there that you are competing with to come across "wrong" or "selfish".
Hat story - one of my favorites.
I had a centerfielder 3 years ago who wore his hat to the side.

After repeated warnings from the head coach - he continued to wear it sideways once he got out into the field.

Our head coach did nothing.

In the 4th inning of the game - I called time out. I walked slowly to CF. (I dont think anyone in the whole ballpark knew what was going on.)

I "politely" requested that the hat be worn straight - and discussed the immediate consequences of the hat being worn sideways for even one more second.

The player - fortunately for all of us - accepted the "friendly advice" and straightened the hat for the rest of the season.

Wink
okay. people should be able to express the way they wanna wear their hats on the baseball field if they want. if they wanna wear their hats a little off to the side, then why say anything to them?..however, i do believe that if u wear ur cap backwards or completely to one side, then that is disrespectful to the game of baseball. let people express themselves with the exception of wearing ur hats backwards or to one side.
My dad never let me wear my hat backwards, or to the side, even when i was a little kid, so im not at all foreign to it. i never have to urge to turn it any which way, i prefer it forward (im catcher, so i get away with backwards, but only when im catching).

but my coach is also very big on hats being straight. "youll never see joe dimmagio with this hat to the side", he always says. one time i was talking to someone with his hat backwards, and i see my coach from behind him, sneak up and yank the cap off his head. he didnt return till the next day. thats not the 1st time hes grabbed hats, though.

i know im going on for a while here, but i just have to say that i do kinda like looking "proper" on the field. idk why, but i like it.
