RICHMOND, Ky. – Sophomore preseason All-American Christian Friedrich hurled six no-hit innings, striking out seven to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to an 8-1 victory over the Long Island Blackbirds in its 2007 season opener Friday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels improve to 1-0 while the Blackbirds, who lost to Oakland 9-2 in the first game of the EKU Early Bird Tournament, fell to 0-2.

The 6-4 southpaw retired the last 12 batters he faced and did not allow the two LIU batters that reached, on a walk and a Colonel error, to make it past first base. The Blackbirds did not record their first hit until there was one out in the seventh but freshman Jim Clancy, who entered at the beginning of the inning, got the next hitter to ground into a double play to get out of trouble.

The Colonels gave Friedrich all the run support he would need with two runs in the second. Sophomore Dylan McMaine and senior Shawn Flora reached on singles to begin the inning which put runners on first and third. Junior Clint Seymour struck out but sophomore Matt Davis lined a two-run single into left-center to give Eastern a 2-0 lead.

Eastern tacked on a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from junior Tyler Barnett, and then put the game out of reach with two more in the fifth. Junior Lucas Waters reached on an error to begin the inning, and then moved to second on a single up the middle from senior captain Tony Wells. Junior Joe Oliver bunted the runners to second and third and one out later Flora drilled a two-run double to right to give the Colonels a 5-0 lead.

EKU added three runs in the eighth to push the margin to 8-0 before Long Island broke up the shutout in the ninth, picking up an unearned run on a two-out RBI single from senior Trey Bell. LIU senior righthander Mike Maynard took the loss, allowing three earned runs in five innings.

The Colonels return to action tomorrow on day two of the EKU Early Bird Tournament, hosting the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at Turkey Hughes Field at 2 p.m. The Blackbirds will also take on Oakland at 10 a.m. in game one of tomorrow’s action.

For the season so far Chris is 1 and 1 with an era of 1.40 in 12 innings pitched he has 17 K's and 3 walks and has given up 6 hits. opponents are batting .142 against Chris. Looks like he is up to his old tricks once again!

Earlier in this thread I posed a question concerning freshman pitching in college. I realize I did not express this very well and in reflection seems silly. Of course freshman play in college and every where if they are good enough. I was looking for more of a base of reference concerning the player I mentioned. I have seen Cole play a lot during his career but even though he is a good player and a geat athlete, still was surprised that he was playing so soon. Is this typical to give new players shakedowns before the season gets serious or is he at that level already to contribute? I don't know because I am not that intimate with what always seperates good from great, ready to play or not. Just wondering.
Also,

You asked what is in this for me, let me tell you.

Got a phonecall from David Reynolds tonight. David is a Freshmen at NIU and lead them in hitting this past Fall. Wasnt getting much playing time this early Spring because of Simond in front of him. He was a little frustrated as any good player would be.

Call comes in, Coach David Reynolds Here. I answered hey Dave, how it going. He said Coach I got my Freshmen debut today, I quickly cut him off knowing what he would say, "got three knocks didnt you"? He replied, no coach I went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and a dinger. Thanks Coach for everything.

So spinner, you take your shots, I'm going to keep doing what I do with our players. As I stated before, I dont need an bunch of little guys from Florida , Ga, on my site. My players are from here..

Sparky1 out
Hey.... NIU's Copp picks up his second win of the season against Fordham going 6 innings. Well done!

Almost forgot Brandon's teammate Dave Reynolds got his first college start going 4 for 5, 2 singles, a double, a home run, and reaching on an error, knocking in 4 and scoring 3 runs... now that putting the bat on the ball... it's going to be tough keeping this freshman out of the line-up after that... just can't keep those Illinois Orioles down. Well done Dave... Congrats!

Congrats to Reynolds at NIU. Keep Swinging it and everything will fall into place.

Today -
Mississippi State won its SEC opener against the Gators. Connor Powers went 4 for 5. CONPOW is now hitting .357 with three dingers.

Purdue beat Samford - Ryne White went 2 for 5 and went yard. He is now hitting .388 with 2 HR's.
Last year YT earned 2nd team All Big 10 Honors and
was named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-America team.
TRhit....

Thanks my friend! He's actually hitting better than his average shows having 11 hits in 41 ab's, 6 runs, 6 rbi's, 1 3b, 3K's, 2BB's, 1HBP all from the lead-off spot. He's moving runners when required, that makes me prouder than his average. He's also playing a heck of good centerfield. What more could a player, or dad ask for!!!! He's playing!!!!!
Smokey.....

Thanks for the "congrats!" Yes, I'm "keeping-the-book" for myself, or at least I did in Florida last week.

As far as the "LT peanut gallery" comment goes, "sweaty" and me are just waiting in the bushes (not together), waiting for someone (Smokey) to rattle our LT cages!!!!!! Big Grin Just remember who "dominated" the LT/OPRF series'!!! I know "ballfan" is gonna whack-me on this comment. LOL

Anyway, I hope to see you out at the LT/OPRF games. I told 'ballfan' I would be out there just to keep Ushela straight!!!!

See yah soon!!

Dan had a very good first game against Rochester in Florida, and we came back to win the second game in that UAA Tournament against #19 Emory.

When Rochester played Washington U. last Saturday, it was kind of interesting when Washington U. had their pitcher, Andy Shields - York H.S., and their catcher, Nick Vom Brack - OPRF, on the field when Andy Cannon - LT, stepped into the batters box. Three Western Suburban Silver players together for that moment. I'm getting verklempt cry

Anyway, the caliber of baseball is definitely higher in college with the quality of pitching being the deciding factor. Don't get me wrong, hitting is equally important as is the defensive play, its just that if a pitcher, usually an upper classman, who can hit his spots and change speeds, pretty much has control over what happens. I believe that is what truly separates the teams at any collegiate level. Players are going to hit fastball pitching no matter what, it's the player that can hit off-speed stuff, or go the other way that can make that difference against the good pitchers. Just my observations in this early season.

NOTE: Local flavor to great D1 TV doubleheader today.

Freshman phenom Connor Powers (Benet) and a very good Mississippi State team face off against #2 South Carolina this afternoon on Direct TV Channel #631(2PM).Powers has made his presence felt in the SEC with a .338 batting average, 5HR and 15 RBI.

Sophomore Ruairi O'Connor (OPRF) and the # 1 Florida State Seminoles will follow that game (@5PM) VS Boston College. O'Connor is at .327 with 7 doubles and 13 RBI for the ACC Division leaders.

BC's Ted Ratliff of Crystal Lake (Central) is the only other Illinois player in these 2 games. Ratliff is a senior and has a 5.40 ERA in 4 appearences this year.

That's amazing how close Conner and freshman Jason Kipnis(Glenbrook North/Kentucky) are in their statistics.

Jason: .393 BA, 2 Doubles, 5 Triples(leads SEC),
6 Homers, 18 RBI and 6 for 7 stolen bases.

It's amazing how close they are in everything. The biggest difference I noticed when looking at their statistics is that Jason has had 20 fewer at bats than Conner (61 vs. 81)

What an incredible impression these Chicago area players are making on the SEC. Let's hope they keep their excellent play going and they will both for sure make the SEC all freshman team, or hopefully more!!
