How about a discussion of good Bourbon?

Everyday...Woodford, Knob's Creek, or Buffalo Trace

Finally tried, now at the top of my list, but cant afford...Pappy 23

Buffalo Trace is probably best bang for your buck. Eagle Rare is good as well. Currenty have an Elijah Craig that is very good.

My 23 YO who still lives at home has a pretty good collection going.  Has all of these in our liquor cabinet.  Tried a Blanton's the other day, was not a fan.  He has worked hard to develop a relationship with our local liquor store.  He is on a first name basis with the managers (such a proud dad...).  They call him whenever they get anything new and interesting in.

If you want something fairly special for sipping, but well below the Pappy price range (have still never managed to try any Pappys myself—are they worth it?):  Woodford Double Oaked is a good choice.

Coach,

8x the players are drafted from D1 over D2. That is a fact. You can try to spin your numbers any way you want, and of course there are guys who will never play significant time on a D1 team. But if they want to give themselves the best odds of getting drafted out of college, they aren’t selecting D2 and D3 schools.

The issue with saying, "8x the players are drafted from D1 over D2", oversimplifies the situation.  From D-1? Which D-1's?  Are the majority of the D1 players drafted from P-5 schools?  If so, than using "D-1" in this way makes it seem like all D-1's are better than the other options mentioned.  That is just simply not the case.

As others have stated, low D-1 vs. High D-2 or D-3 can be similar levels of baseball, but may offer much better options for academic/career development.  Your blanket statement just doesn't work...

Just picked that up the Woodford Double Oaked the other day.  Very good.

I really enjoyed the Pappy, but I would not pay the outrageous price for a bottle. If you can pick one up at retail probably worth it, but not worth the $$$$ they get on the secondary market.   I had it as part of a sampling at a local restaurant so it was only a couple of sips of it.  I would describe it as very smooth.  Very little ethanol flavor with a nice subtle oak flavor.  I wanted to say I paid $60 or $70 for the tasting of 5 different bourbons.  The only reason I choose the tasting was for the Pappy.

My son, Ryan was named after 2 of my faves: Ryan Klesko of the Braves & Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn.

I tell everyone that I like anything from Neil Diamond to Motley Crue.  Currently I am listening to a lot of Chris Stapleton on Pandora, and that has led me to a bunch of artists that I like and had never heard of - Whiskey Myers, Brent Cobb, Cody Jinks, etc.

Side note: There is a tequila called Ryno that has gotten very high marks in the tequila snob world. I haven't had an opportunity to sample it, as we don't get it in my neck of the woods, but it's on my list!

I'll second the vote for Elijah Craig for an everyday standby in the budget range. Angel's Envy is a notch up and well worth it if you haven't tried it.

Just got done with a tasting a few weeks ago. I did not partake but my Wife did. Angels Envy came in Dead last no one liked it. And even the guy who brought it said he was just trying to get rid of it so he could save the bottle. My wife brought basil hayden. It finished in the middle of the pack.

However it is one of the Bucket list Bourbons:

That's amazing! We can only get Angel's Envy on base in my area and they stock it in multiple cases just to service the firm I work for. It's like hot cakes.

Could be a regional thing. There were quite a few from the Bucket list. I think Larceny was the winner.

Will try a few of these over the weekend....never been a bourbon guy, very curious...  Next thread - French wine...

Everybody have a terrific weekend!

I'm not a French Wine guy, but I will say I spent a week in Paris followed by a week in Bordeaux.  Basically I was forced to drink wine as they drink that stuff like its water.  I did find a few that I liked.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Eric Church.  He's my ATF.  Stapleton is a close 2nd

The first time I heard Eric Church I wondered how a guy his size (6’2”) could have a voice like his. He’s good though. First time I saw him he was the opener for Chesney.

Was coaching youth ball MANY moons ago when the standard post-season gift of gratitude was a $5 gift certificate to the local sporting goods store.  The staff was each gifted with a $80 bottle of Justin Isosceles Reserve wine.  Come to find out one of the dads was the winemaker.  Would have been nice to know before the season

I'm more of a good beer guy but it doesn't suck living in the middle of wine country.

If you really haven't ever developed much of taste for bourbon, I'd suggest avoiding the neat, room-temp sipper right away and go for something a little "easier" to drink like a well-made Old Fashioned. I'm not talking about some Applebee's deal with a ton of ice on top of a smashed up giant orange slice and a nasty glowing red maraschino cherry, but something a little more like this. I'd also add a Luxardo cherry to this recipe. Cheers!

Edit: You might also take that recipe and strain over a single large ice cube as opposed to the way it's displayed.

Cabbage - which grape area are you near?  Craft beer killed the waistline I’m back to my wines, or the aforementioned Bourbons.

Paso Robles / California Central Coast...  Fortunately, I've become a lightweight.  So, one or two good beers a sitting doesn't cause too much weight damage.  Over 200 wineries within probably about a ten mile radius of the house.. I can't keep track.  Besides, after two, they all taste pretty good.

as a rookie bourbon drinker, what should I look for?

If you want to start easy try a Kentucky mule. Ginger beer and bourbon with a lime wedge. Ask for bullit, woodford or knobs creek

if you want to jump in use the same bourbons as above on the rocks. The melting ice will help to open up the bourbon some. I like to add a splash of maraschino cherry juice. Not the crappy red dye stuff but the thick heavy syrup from Luxardo brand.
