Family was invited to tour the university and the athletic facilities via a golf cart (large campus). The assistant coach, who showed us around, then handed us over to the head coach who presented my son an offer in his office. My wife and I sat nearby and let son go with the discussion and clarified what the offer fully entailed. Son asked coach for time because he had 2 visits at other schools pending and an other offer in hand.

A week later, the coach reached out to my son via phone during a 4-hour drive home from a visit to another university. About 5 minutes into the phone call, my son told the coach that he was all in and would like to commit (to my surprise). My son said that there was nothing more to think about. And that was that. This occured in the summer before my son's senior year of high school.

The first offer came from the head coach on the phone after about six months of talking on the phone regularly and a pretty good camp.  They told him to take as long as he needed to decide.  Was talking to several schools over the summer and a few told him "We want to make you an offer", let us know when you are ready to make your decision.  When he had narrowed it down to 3, he told the schools he was ready and they put the offer on the table.  At that point it was understood that he would either accept or decline within a week. Was interesting to see how different the process was with different schools.  Sounds like the norm is for the schools to not have offers hanging out on the table for very long, which makes sense to me.

Will talk about a few different ones.

1.  Very successful D1  We went on visit his freshman year and at the end they had him in a conference room where we talked about a lot of things.  They had talked and shown all the success for team and individuals.  At the end of the conversation with HC and RC, the HC pointed to white board that had a big 60 on it.  He said that looks like a good number.  Do you like that number?  That is our offer to you.  60% off the top of everything.   With instate scholarships you should be at or over 100% when you walk in these doors.  He concluded with I know you have a lot of time and thinking but we wanted to be the first.  That's how we feel about you.  You are our first for that year and we are your first.

2.  P5  Sophomore fall went on a visit the day of official visits for senior guys.  Could not do some of the things they did but was there the whole time.  Stayed until after basketball game on Friday night and he had ball on Saturday night so we chose not to go back for football game.  They had asked his time he was playing on Saturday.  They called him on Saturday between games and made him 65% offer.  Same situation.  As you know, you will get instate tuition even though you do not live in state because of some policy.  With the in state tuition and a few scholarships you are available for you should be at 100%.  No pressure to let us know but we want to let you know where you stand with us.  They only saw him pitch 1 time and that was HC at 17U WWBA.  We had sent emails to them for a while and they had never responded.  They had changed fields due to rain that morning and I sent another email out on his behalf that morning letting everyone know that he was still pitching and that field had changed.  Put my contact info at the bottom.  HC called me and talked a few minutes and said he was going to try to be there.  He called me back as soon as son was done pitching and we talked a few minutes.  Wanted more info and stats from HS.  He was picking up with this team so I also gave him regular travel coaches contact info.

3.  P5.  Mid summer before junior year.  HC called after visit with PC on campus.  Talked about 5 minutes on the phone about his goals for college baseball.  Made sure he wanted to be a 2 way guy.  Then made offer over phone.  No pressure until the end of that summer.  He followed him all over the Southeast and Midwest.  At the end of the summer he said what are you waiting on.  No pressure just let me know where we stand.  Son called him back in 20 minutes after we had conversation on what he was waiting on and committed.

2.  When they heard #3 had offered they called and raised theirs to 100% athletic money so it does happen.

He had multiple other offers and most were in one on one conversations at tournaments or over phone.  Each sent an email or paper copy of their offer.  They all are different.

One offer D1 (preferred walk-on) came summer before Sr. year at their camp.  1 month before NLI of his Sr. year received phone call from Mid-Major D1 (saw him at their camp a few months earlier ).  Offer presented over the phone, son in his wisdom asked if he can let him know by 72 hrs after he speaks with us.  Within 1 hour his 2nd Mid Major D1 offer came in via phone.  Son said he will let him know within 72 hours, not mentioning anything about his prior call.  Makes you kind of wonder if big ears are lurking around at the schools (son did not post anything on social media).  Son accepted first offer since school was a HA D1, a few hours drive from home.  Probably the best decision he has ever made since that started in motion his baseball career.  Son was worried and nervous that he would not get a D1 offer since his high school teammates already gave their verbals.  Nothing like waiting until almost the end!

My son, a 2020 RHP, was a 'late bloomer' due to a medical issue in the summer before his junior year. So, he was basically unknown until he popped on the scene this past June as a rising senior. His measurables put him on the bubble as a D1 and got him some calls and text conversations with a couple of mid-majors, but nothing solid was happening.

In July we attended the Head First showcase on Long Island. Son pitched great and got tons of HA D3 attention and, again, some D1 nibbles. He followed up the showcase with an email to his top choice, a good mid major in the northeast that looked like the right academic fit. The coach wrote back, said he had been hearing good things about my son and invited him to a prospect camp. He went, threw very well and got a call as we drove home that he was on a 'very short list' for the last roster spot for 2020. They requested transcripts and coach contact info and told him they had a few other guys to look at and they would be in touch. He had strong grades and SAT scores, which helped. Over the next few weeks they moved quickly to vet him with several coaches and then called and made an offer by phone. They did a great job of keeping him informed along the way and they kept to the schedule they had promised.

The whole thing from showcase to offer was probably two months. My son wasn't on the recruiting scene earlier, and this school was only looking for a pitcher so late in the season because they had lost a commit (not sure if the kid backed out or the school did), so the whole thing was a little unusual. But I get the impression that everybody's recruiting path is different.
