No, it's one visit an inning per pitcher. There is no cumulative visit rule in pro rules.

Correct, one free visit per pitcher per inning. On the second visit to the same pitcher in the same inning, the pitcher must be removed. (MLB)

FED: Three free visits per regualtion game. One free visit per inning in extra innings.
Guys, I'm a new poster to this forum but I've been reading it for a while. You are all AWESOME in you rules explanations!

I am hoping that you can explain this one to me. Last Saturday, during the warm-up between innings, I walked to the mound to coach my pitcher a little (13u). The umpires told me that there are some in the league that would consider that a mound visit.

In the 38 years I have been around baseball (playing/umpiring/coaching) I have NEVER heard that. Is there a rule in the books to support that position? What are your takes on that interpretation?

Thanks!

If in the umpire's judgment you are holding up the game, he can charge you with a conference. However, if he is throwing his warmups at a decent pace and your talking is not interfering, and you leave (usually with two to go or balls in) and there is no delay, most umpires will let this go.

Since I was not there, hard to say if I would judge your actions from the story would warrant charging a conference.

I'm not sure what rules set you were playing under but cyclonehokie has it....

Under NFHS rules, the coach may stand with his pitcher at the mound between half innings. if his presence creates a delay the umpire "MAY" charge a conference.....3.4.1

Under OBR leagues its not precisely covered in the rule book, but an older official Interp says if a conference delays the game, the umpire will warn the manager that on the next delay he will be charged with a trip to the mound....A team must be warned once per game before the penaty is invoked...

Off Interp 107-145 DEARY- 12/85
Great thanks!!

Just for clarification purposes, I was at the mound for 2 or 3 pitches, and told my pitcher to concentrate on his mechanics. That was it. Then I headed back toward the dugout. We are playing under NFHS rules, with modified distances for pitchers mound (54.6 feet) and base distances (80 feet).

Your explanations and rule citations gave me the clarification I needed.

I'll say it again, you guys are AWESOME!

Don't completely disregard what the umpire told you because there are many umpires who are always willing to pick up the dirty end of the stick and will charge you with a conference right or wrong. It might be something to discuss with he umpire before going out there if you are worried about the number of visits.

so, back to the original topic - 1 free visit per pitcher per inning in OBR, but 3 cumulative conferences in NFHS. Can someone give me the background on the NFHS version and explain why it was modified? I understand the rule but have yet to see a rational explanation of the intent. Help me out here....please.

Intent was to speed up the game.

Keep in mind if you remove the pitcher during a trip to the mound it does not count as a visit (3-4-1)

As mentioned, speeding the game up is the main reason.
Pro/OBR: 0ne per pitcher per inning.
NFHS: Three per game/seven innings. One per each extra innning, no carry over of unused visits from the three in extra innings.
NCAA: Three per game/seven or nine innings. One per each extra inning, any unused visits can carry over. Also a second visit in the same inning requires a change.
LL: Three visits per pitcher. The count resets for each pitcher. You can make all three visits in the same inning.
