Significance of July 1 call?

For youngsters, the roto twin is better than both. 2 balls that rotate on a tee. But when the big boys get a hold of it, it doesn't last. The 2 you mentoned are more for 12 and under. Nothing like an old fashioned tee and sock net.

First of all, the argument of s****r being the most popular sport in the world doesn't work with me. This is America and s****r is NOT an American sport. We do not need this country to be more like the rest of the world. I'm coaching 7&8 year olds this summer. There's no way they can learn in s****r what they are learning by playing baseball. Determining the World Cup winner on penalty kicks seems odd. First - what was the penalty? Why call them penalty kicks? Second, out of ten kicks, the goalies got their hands on a grand total of zero balls. In 7 or 8 out of ten kicks the goalies dove the wrong way. This is somewhat akin to game ending when the shortstop dives toward third on a ground ball up the middle. The Cup was decided on one guy who couldn't kick the ball into a wide open net when the goalie dove the wrong way. Pretty...

Re: Back Spin

LevelPath19 ·
Agree with Texan that backspin does help the ball carry and is ideal on most hits. But... It is not ideal to swing down in order to create the spin. Any carry that is added will be negated by the lack of force produced by swinging down. A ball should be met squarely to produce the maximum amount of force. In other words, if you want to produce force in a 10 degree upward angle (line drive over the SS head), the bat should collide with the ball at that 10 degree upward angle. Picture hitting...

I hope he doesn't have Robb Nen's shoulder problems. I don't know if he is doing this by design (e.g. as a source of power), or if he is just doing it to prevent rushing, but the net result is good. It keeps his glove-side hips closed longer, which lets him more powerfully rotate his shoulders. Steve Carlton did something similar (but his glove-side toe didn't actually touch the ground)... http://www.chrisoleary.com/documents/PitcherAnalysis_SteveCarlton.pdf

I think visualization is powerful in and out of sports. I use it while I'm on the mound, in between innings and at night...very often, obviously. I've found that running the visualization both backward and forward from the desired focal finishing point is good for me. In basketball, that would be from the first dribble to the ball dropping out of the net. Thanks for the insight...glad to hear it works for others. I wish I'd utilized this tool at an earlier age.

Jon, I am curious what you think is too heavy to throw? I think the advantage of the weighted balls is that the work is very specific and the arm moves slower. How much over 5oz is too much? He did 8 studies with overload and underload and reported next to no arm injuries with increased performance. I am sure ASMI also has a study that shows performance...

Yes, but you don't want to try to heave a 3lb ball (or even a 1lb ball) 200 feet. You have to scale back the force and slowly build up the muscles. The point is smooth, gradual conditioning.

Leverage, Your missing the point. Im not saying power comes from the hands. Im saying hands (elbow moving down) starts the swing, and then the shoulders take over providing the power. If you start the swing with the shoulders you will pull off, losing the lower half, and reduce power. Power, I don't use much technical jargon at all with a hitter. I show him/her correct contact point on a tee. I make sure they stay at that distance from the tee through the drill, and tell them they have to...

You are getting good advice. To add a couple of things: if you have space in your yard or garage, get a tee and a net or tarp to hit balls into. Do this in conjunction with some qualified hitting instruction though, because you want to be sure you are practicing the correct swing mechanics. It is an ongoing process of learning, practice and correction, and a tee is a big help in getting those reps of your swing in. You will likely be working up to 50 and 100+ swings per session. Make sure...

We compared the net cost of attendance of the three schools that our son was considering. Once they saw the "gross price" less grants and scholarships, they matched the net cost by increasing their grant. We did this in the form of a letter with a spreadsheet that we backed with the admittance/grant & scholarhips letters that we received from the other schools. They increased his grant $20k over four-years.

Going to college is getting to be like buying a car. The stated tuition etc. charges are like the sticker price. There are all sorts of opportunities to practice, even if you're just using one of those ball return nets ("practice partners" or what we used to call "pitch backs") in the back yard. Texan, By low release I mean a pitcher like Seaver with his knee on or near the ground at release and a low 3/4 delivery. That could be as low as 3 ft. off the ground. Now assume a tall hitter and an umpire with a high strike zone, so 5' above the ground for the top of the strike zone. Now assume a ball going an average of 90 mph and traveling 54' to the front of the strike zone, since the pitcher releases out front of the rubber and the plate is about 17" deep. We can round that to .41...

Conference and post-season rosters will still be 25 spots. The bottom line is less roster spots, less non-scholarship players, more game ready rostered players. And if I may add: Participants and fans sometimes misunderstand the infield fly rule. The infield fly rule is not in effect if there is a runner on first only, as the rule-makers assumed fielders would not gain a significant advantage by forcing out the runner rather than the batter; in either case, the net result would be one more out and a runner on first base. Also, an infield fly does not affect baserunners other than the batter. Just like any other fly ball, if an infield fly is caught,...
