My son played a game today where the opposing catcher spent the entire game talking to the batters, telling them to swing, etc including using Ozzie Guillen-type slurs to describe our players.

Umpire said nothing and when one of our batters complained, he just said Play Ball.

If we had more than nine on our bench today and could afford an ejection, I'd be tempted to knock him one his butt.

I have seen (heard) this before - our players (with no one prompting them) continually kicked dirt with thier back foot on the catcher prior to EVERY pitch - the Ump was cracking up! Never did shut the kid up but it still is one of those great baseball stories that we like to talk about.

On the more serious side, we had a game that almost ended with a bench clearing brawl. The catcher talked all game and when one of our players popped out to end the game he made a remark not suitable for this site and our players reacted strongly but the coach handled it well....our coach also gave the opposing coach some "advice" about future games. The Ump did nothing!

To me baseball is about class - winning or losing. In both scenarios no one would shake the hand of the catcher at the end of the game - if thats my son, he wouldn't need an Ump, coach or anyone else to change the way he was acting.
The only time I ever talk to a batter is if they are trying to look at my signs, I tell him to stop cheating and look at the pitcher.

But I thought if someone is being annoying in baseball, you plunk him. If the catcher is annoying and it isn't a close game, you hit him (with a picth), and he learns his lesson about annoying everyone.
Son doesn't talk to batters unless he knows them and then it's a "hello" or "how's it going". Nothing out of the way. He's never had to deal with a batter stealing a sign.

In LL there was a catcher that would talk to the batters. Sometimes he would say swing. Ump finally told him not to do that. That didn't stop him from chatting, though. Things like, "who's your sister?", "man, it's hot today.", or "I wish I had a hot dog. I'm hungry." All this while the pitcher was about to deliver the ball. He was well liked. Big Grin

My son was at bat in a HS game and knew the catcher well and remebered the pitcher from the little league rec program. 1st pitch was a change (or so he thought) and he missed badly.

He laughed and said to his catcher buddy, calling a change on the 1st pitch was a good call. The catcher laughed as well but admitted that was the pitchers fast ball.

I couldnt figure out at the time why my son and the catcher were just grinning ear to ear for the rest of the game - baseball momnets are priceless!!!!!
I'll never understand this, at this level and I will state HS and youth ball, there is no excuse for an umpire allowing any negative talk between batters and catchers.....

I dont allow it......period....there can be interaction, but it better be minimal and cordial......

Years ago, I was the base umpire in a legion game when in the late innings, the catcher and batter jumped up and got into a full fledged fist fight.......we got them broken up and of course ejected when I asked the UIC what happended and he said that "they had been going at each other all game long"........

All it would have taken was a warning in the early innings and that would have cooled that off...so now that has been my policy from that day until this one..... I have "0" tolerance for this type of behavior..... ...I understand that baseball is a passionate game and I tolerate and encourage passion.....to a degree....
As a catcher the only time I talk to a batter is if i know the person, i'm just cracking a joke and not expecting anything back, or to ask a quick question. Nothing long, nothing distracting, way before he even gets in the box. As a hitter i hate talkin to the catcher. I just wanna concentrate on the pitcher, but sometimes they say something. Theres two things i dont do when im up to bat..talk to the catcher, and pick up any foul ball i hit or a wild pitch. Thats my superstititousness (spelling? lol) for you. Im very superstitious.
